Waiting until the morning presser before adding more tags to this thread, such as:

random victims, domestic (violence? disturbance?), mental illness, ar-15, assault rifles...and more

Such a sad and horrible day for the city. :-(

Santa Monica Strong...it *will* recover!

GN all, and thanks to so many posters who shared the news as it came-in, bad though it was.

I didn't see anything about mental illness.

I didn't see anything about mental illness.

Thanks for asking!

It was mentioned on one of the many livestream news sites I was tracking today, that the suspect suffered from mental illness (nothing further defined).

Just a possibility, which is exactly why I wouldn't tag this thread with the term at this point and will wait until the morning's presser or more to come-out before doing, if ever.

ETA: Unfortunately, based on news site comments, the tag gun debate may also apply.

Details about the blue Mazda and more in this article:

Santa Monica shootings: 10 harrowing minutes

First, he carjacked a vehicle being driven by Laura Sisk, 41, of Culver City. Sisk said she presumed at first that the man was with the police or Secret Service. She was in an unfamiliar neighborhood, trying to avoid the roadblocks set up for a visit by President Obama when she steered her blue Mazda onto Yorkshire

The car in front of her made a U-turn, revealing the shooter, with his assault rifle pointed at her, a bag at his feet.

"He told me to pull over," she recalled, still clearly shaken. "He insisted I get out of the car and pick up his bag. I think it was full of ammunition, and insisted I drive him."

Story continues at link above.

Already a wikipedia article up for 2013 Santa Monica shooting.

The Article and the Talk tab pages are both interesting, for those wanting more 'details' about today's happenings, and the suspect too.

The pages will undoubtedly be modified much in the hours ahead.

fwiw, anyway...lots of links!

I still can't find an article, video etc that gives a reason for the assailant's attacks. I'm curious as to why he did what he did. All these shooting are sad.....

Authorities were expected to hold a news conference at noon Saturday to provide updates to the shooting rampage in Santa Monica that left five people dead, including the suspected gunman, and a sixth hospitalized with death reportedly imminent.

The news comes as one of the victims in the shooting was identified as Carlos Navarro Franco, a 68-year-old resident of West Los Angeles, said Coroner's Investigator Joyce Kato. Franco was in a red SUV that was fired upon by the gunman, officials said.

---------------------------

Two people found dead in the home may be related to the suspect, said Sgt. Richard Lewis of the Santa Monica Police Department.

Those victims are believed to be the father of the gunman, 55-year-old Samir Zawahri, and one of Zawahri's adult sons, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times.

I REALLY wish
that people would consider the wide reaching impact of their actions.
An entire group of people will once again be punished for one man's decisions.
It just isn't fair. :stormingmad:

Source: Santa Monica gunman previously hospitalized for mental health

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Saturday that the gunman had suffered mental health issues. A couple of years ago, he was hospitalized for treatment after allegedly talking about harming someone, according to the official.

Further details at link above...

Also, CNN TV reported earlier this morning that LE may release more info around noon Pacific (3 pm Eastern).

Yet, somehow he had an assault weapon at his disposal, along with other weapons. :banghead: Why aren't they releasing his name? Seems odd that a reporter asked whether the ATF had been at the suspects home a month or so ago.

Report on victim in red SUV. As also reported on CNN TV just now, sadly the passenger, his daughter, is not expected to live.

This is so sad! She had just gone through a kidney transplant, heading back to college, Dad driving her to get her books (he's dead too). There aren't enough words to describe how I feel about the suspect...taking innocent lives. If I said what I felt, I would be in band camp. Sickening!! All of these lives, forever changed by one ....

According to CNN TV, the press conference is now scheduled for around 1 pm Pacific.

Officials are currently setting-up for the presser.

Presser just started...CNN TV.

Presumably the name of the killer will be released at that time, hopefully with additional info including the origin and religion of the family. Much is already out there on the net about all of this, and needs official confirmation. I'm hoping that ppl will refrain from making this into something it is not.
