This article gives the COD in the title, and in the article itself. It sounds like only one gun shot wound in the head from this article.

Police: Gianni Belvedere shot in head
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/feb/07/gianni-belvedere-autopsy-findings-released/

"Homicide victim Gianni Belvedere, whose decomposing body was found in the trunk of a car in Riverside last month, died from a gunshot wound to the head, San Diego police said Friday."

Not to be totally morbid but I can see where "gunshot wound to the head" as COD could be one shot or more than one. Most likely one shot killed him, but there could've been more shots. Wow did it make me sick to type that.

I'm still reeling over the fact that Ilona was potentially so close to being rescued too.

I hope the people who did this are found.

More than one gunshot also negates the possibility of suicide.

It seems unlikely IMO that both vehicles would have been at the mall to pick up Ilona from work. It appears to me that someone was after this family. Is there any connection to the change in ownership of the family restaurant in Lakeside mentioned earlier in the thread? What is the status of it now?

I hadn't thought of something before in fact it was a little kid who brought to my attention "what makes you think the people did this are still in California? Why just hang around waiting for surveillance tapes to get released?"' And I think that's a very good point!

"Homicide victim Gianni Belvedere, whose decomposing body was found in the trunk of a car in Riverside last month, died from a gunshot wound to the head, San Diego police said Friday."

After reading and seeing on TV from CBS, NBC and other they all seem to refer to "multiple shots and wounds (plural)" regarding the shot to the head. Seems the Union Tribune is the only one stating a single gunshot? So this would validate what Momoffourboys commented on that multiple would negate the possibility of suicide. Therefore the reason LE was confident as soon as they found Gianni that it was homicide.

I certainly hope that through cell phones , Gianni's car and information that LE is keeping close to the vest they are hot on someone(s) trail.

Had to go back to Page One of this thread to bump TravelingBug's post. There was something odd about Ilona's 911 call right from the start.

Thanks for bringing that forward, Curious Me! I had forgotten that TravelingBug had provided us so much information near the beginning.

I actually listen to this all play out on the scanner as it happened.

The little snippet that has been played back on local media is only a piece of it, and obviously only just the piece what what Ilona first said and then what the dispatcher radioed, not the rest w/ the call room or the rest w/ the dispatcher and what was aired to officers, etc. or any of the part of their search for her and then the ultimate discovery of the vehicle and her and Salvatore.
....

Everything (or at least all I was able to hear) was VERY calm. She never stated there was anyone else who had been shot, and while she couldn't state exactly where in the mall she was (this, and other part are part of why I don't think it's where they were ultimately found) she was very clear on the fact that that's where she was.

Rereading early posts about the scanner feed, I got confused about something. I think I originally missed that this is referring to Ilona's actual demeanor/statements; I thought it was referring to what the dispatcher was relaying to others. Was the 911 call audible on the scanner? Is that normal in California or something? TIA for the help!

I keep trying to imagine how the shooter got to all of them. Asking myself all kinds of awkward questions in an attempt to understand who did this.

Let me share my own fumbling questions with all of you. If this wasn't done by some random nut at the mall, then it seems it was someone known to them. I often seem to picture, in my own mind, the shooter being with Gianni first.

Did the shooter act all friendly and maybe was with Gianni prior to the mall, and then betray him? Was Gianni shot and left in his own car someplace else while the shooter went to the mall, then later Gianni's car moved to Riverside? Or did Gianni see the other two being shot?

Who was the main target? Why all three? Why did the other two have to be shot? (if just Gianni was shot, then the other two would know who was connected?)

Did he shoot Gianni first then go to the mall? LE seems to say they have video of the shooter at the mall, but do they, and is Gianni there, as well, at the mall?

The disappearance of Gianni for a month is another mystery. Did they want to make it look like a murder/suicide? Did they want to cause as much pain and suffering for the family to send some kind of message?

It's not easy being in my head with all these questions and no answers.

I wonder if that is why the family held out hope Gianni was alive because they thought he witnesses something. I remember a while back one of their friends from Utah posted on here that he may have witnessed something.

I am curious about Ilona's family, and her backstory. Everyone, including myself, finds it easy to conclude that the brothers were the main targets, but really, we don't know much about Ilona to rule her out as a target, do we?

  • #931
The beginning of the posts regarding the various restaurants started about page 7 or so and I believe about post #192 or so and then go sprinkled thereafter. Something about the various uncles and the splintering off of each uncle having a restaurant. Could business deals gone wrong somewhere have been involved? Just wondering as to a motive for such a horrific act to these kids. If you think I'm crazy just say so.

Interesting article about recent study on how hitmen operate

A few snipped comments from article:

http://www.psmag.com/navigation/politics-and-law/how-hitmen-operate-73430/

Very interesting article. Thanks Carioca. Now I'm considering if this was done by a stranger hit man not known to all three.

How Do Hitmen Operate?
http://www.psmag.com/navigation/politics-and-law/how-hitmen-operate-73430/

Was this hit man
(1) a “Novice” a total fledgling.
(2) a “Dilettante” is a bumbling idiot
(3) a “Journeyman” is far more skilled
(4) a “Master” doesn’t commit the same mistakes as all the other killers do.

You have a good point, elmomom. Ilona's mother still lives in Utah, I think.

Another thing - Salvatore was in Oregon and had recently returned home to San Diego per Uncle Otto.
I don't know how long he was gone, and how recent his return.

Scanner audio feeds carry "traffic" between LE / EMS and their respective dispatches, in my experience.

I've personally not heard direct 911 calls when I've had :earson:
ETA: typically, we hear dispatch relay messages from the 911 callers (e.g., "Complaintant states," or "Caller states," etc) over the air.
:twocents:

However, I wasn't on the San Diego feed that fateful night. TravelingBug is definitely the best WSer to answer this one specifically.

Perhaps another WS Scanner expert could chime in as well?

I wonder if the cars were designated as ONLY Sal's car or ONLY Gianni's car?
Or were they simply family cars?
We own several cars and each of us drives their OWN, but, other families i know have and share family cars.
Could Sal have been shot because he was with Ilona and the shooter assumed it was Gianni?
Hope this is not a repeat question. TIA

This is what I've gathered so far. The black car at the mall was said to have been the father's or parent's car borrowed by Salvatore that night. It seems the car found in Riverside was always identified as Gianni's car. I don't know if Sal owned a car or not.

Mistaken identity doesn't seem to be the case as whoever did this got all three, but that's only my opinion.

Please know all said is just my own understanding of the situation and my own opinions. I really want them to find who did this.

Here is an updated UT http://m.utsandiego.com/news/2014/feb/07/gianni-belvedere-autopsy-findings-released/ it was updated 7 min ago and it says Salvatore was shot in the torso it didn't say anything about the head I wonder if he was conscience at any point before he died to say what happened http://m.utsandiego.com/news/2014/feb/07/gianni-belvedere-autopsy-findings-released/

I went back to the first page of this forum. I remembered from the start hearing Sal suffered from a brain injury. Over time some articles disappear, so I always try to quote some of the article on WS. BBM

I'm wondering why we have not heard more from "CuriousFriend" since before his "friend" Gianni was found. There was some mention of him being in SD for one of the vigils coming from Utah. But nothing since. He seemed to have a lot of inside information but wasn't divulging any. And he was very close to Ilana as well.

What if the shooter only realized it was salvatore after he shot him? Maybe after he shot him Ilona yelled "omg, sal!!" And that is how the shooter realized it was not Gianni. At that point, Gianni was hunted down and killed, as well.
IDK. Maybe I'm reaching here, but, Ilona being a victim doesn't fit, for me, unless it was mistaken identity.
