Stray Police Bullet Kills Girl as Officers Fire at Suspect in Los Angeles Store
The suspect was killed and a shot pierced a wall, fatally striking a 14-year-old in a dressing room during the confrontation at a clothing store, the police said
A Los Angeles police officer opened fire on a man who was involved in an assault at a clothing store on Thursday, and one of the shots pierced a wall, killing a 14-year-old girl in a dressing room, the police said.

The shooting happened at a Burlington store in North Hollywood during the busy holiday shopping season after the police received reports at about 11:45 a.m. of an assault with a deadly weapon and possible shots fired, the police said. Some of the callers said they were hiding in the store, the police said. <snip>

The dress for her 15th birthday...
From what little I've seen in MSM, it sounds like the officer was diligent and not careless. Nevertheless, she is gone.
How in the world is this going to be treated?
I can't imagine what that poor officer is going through. And her family.
Beyond my thoughts to even grasp...

I agree that the body cam shows care and teamwork leading up to the shooting. Since they were told that there were gunshots, they went in there prepared for a gun and not a bike lock.

I wonder about these 911 calls that report gunshots when there apparently weren't any. Is it common for people to assume (or even think that they heard) gunshots when someone is assaulted and call that in? Is it a psychological response to the high incidence of gun violence, that everything seems like a gun? Or is it to ensure speedy police response because the caller thinks a gun will be taken more seriously than another weapon?

SMH -- Good questions. We do live in a gun society, in a manner of speaking -- I don't know what noise made things sound like gunshots, if anything really did, but it doesn't come as a surprise. Maybe the guy was swinging the bike lock against something and it made a sharp noise. And we certainly have seen shootings in a mall before.
Glad the man was subdued so that he couldn't hurt anyone else. SMH. A true tragedy, yes.

I'm just hearing about this, so I'm just trying to gather my thoughts. Anyone that knows the facts better, please let me know if I have something wrong.

Man entered the Burlington, went upstairs and came back down wearing different clothes. He was attackng with a bike lock. The police came, and used guns to get the suspect, and in shooting at the suspect, the bullet went through the dry wall/dressing room wall and hit and killed Valentina.

Is that correct?

The CNN article I posted said that the person who called the police told the police that he was weaponizing a bike lock. I'm just trying to get my use of force thoughts together.

Thanks!

The 14-year-old girl who was killed by Los Angeles police last week — she was struck while hiding in a dressing room as an officer was aiming rifle rounds at a man suspected of assaulting customers at a clothing store and a bullet went through a wall — loved skateboarding and had dreams of becoming an engineer to build robots, her family said Tuesday.

Family members of a teenager killed by a police officer at a store last week are considering a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department and demanding justice for the 14-year-old girl who ended up as “collateral damage,” according to an attorney representing them.
[...]
“When something impacted my daughter, it threw us on the floor and she died in my arms, and there was nothing I could do,” Peralta said through the translator. “To see a son or daughter die in your arms is one of the most profound pains any human being can imagine … now our sweet angel has left forever. Please give us strength, Valentina.”

@Kristin Esq.

Your understanding is correct from what I've seen!
Just such a sad, sad thing. I can't imagine what the LE who fired the shot that killed the girl is going through.

Thank you for your confirmation.

I'm sure the LE who fired the shot feels awful.

My legal mind is asking me if the use of the gun was necessary when all he had was a bike lock.

The police should have just let the guy run out of the store and escape instead of taking the chance of hurting someone.
Oh, how many "could have" and "should have" thoughts are going through so many people's minds.
We see so many tragedies, and we still hurt, hurt, hurt -- don't we? :(

Yes, it makes me wonder what LE was told from the 911 department. There must have been some loud noises, surely. This is gonna be a bad one, I'm thinking.

why if they thought he was armed and would hurt or kill bystanders

Good point, @LadyL -- We've already seen a number of mall shootings -- this guy apparently did not have a firearm, but LE has be ready to protect the people in the mall.
Oh, this is gonna be so difficult... Grief on all sides...

I feel terrible about that poor little girl. It's awful.
If you listen to the 911 call, it sounds like a gun shot so I'm thinking they thought he was armed. The guy was a complete lunatic and I'm glad he can no longer hurt anyone else.
