AP Weinstein lawyers seek mercy after his 'historic' fall

March 10, 2020
NEW YORK — With prosecutors seeking a severe punishment for Harvey Weinstein in his landmark #MeToo case, his lawyers argued on Monday that he deserves mercy for his already “historic fall from grace” and serious health issues.

In a letter filed in advance of Weinstein’s sentencing on Wednesday for his New York City rape conviction, his defense team asked Judge James Burke to give him only five years behind bars — a far cry from the potential 29-year maximum term allowed by law.

Once Weinstein is sentenced, he’ll be transferred from the city’s jail system to the state prison system.

Unsealed docs show a suicidal Harvey Weinstein’s fraught mental state when rape allegations broke
MAR 10, 2020 | 11:32 AM
. . . newly unsealed documents in Manhattan Supreme Court revealed.

“I have only despair," Weinstein wrote in one of the now-public papers, a draft of an unreleased statement dated Dec. 21, 2017. “I have lost my family. I have daughters that will not talk to me. I have lost my wife. I have lost the respect of my ex-wife and generally almost all of my friends. I have no company. I’m alone. And I will be honest with you: I’m suicidal.”

“In addiction, we have to forgive ourselves. Yet, I find it impossible. I have devastated my friends and my family. I don’t want to forgive myself, but if I roll up my sleeves, I can show the world the suffering I’m seeing on this journey.”
[...]
More than 1,000 pages of documents were unsealed in advance of the 67-year-old defendant’s Wednesday sentencing, with many depicting his abject desperation as his world crumbled in the wake of exposés by The New York Times and New Yorker. Both reported on allegations that he raped and abused scores of women over years of outrageous behavior.

Harvey Weinstein’s brother Bob Weinstein says disgraced mogul belongs in hell
March 10, 2020 | 12:22pm
Harvey Weinstein‘s brother said he belonged in hell and compared him to OJ Simpson during a blistering email exchange amid the avalanche of #MeToo allegations that led to the movie mogul’s downfall, court papers revealed Tuesday.

“F–k u Harvey Weinstein. I pray there is a real hell. That’s where u belong,” Bob Weinstein wrote on Nov. 2, 2017.

“I suppose being you, is its own hell, if u could feel it, but no chance. OJ, didn’t kill Nicole Simpson and u had consensual sex with all those poor victimized women.”

[...]
“U deserve a lifetime achievement award for the sheer savagery and immorality and inhumanness, for the acts u have perpetrated,” he wrote.

The disgraced mogul’s defense team, led by Donna Rotunno, are pleading for the very lightest possible sentence. Judge James Burke will reconvene at the New York supreme court at 9.30am on Wednesday to hand down his sentence, which could be as severe as 29 years in prison.

A letter from Rotunno and her fellow lawyers, addressed to Burke, contains praise for the convicted rapist that is certain to incense the 105 women who have come forward to accuse him of various degrees of sexual misconduct.

The note says: “His life story, his accomplishments, and struggles are simply remarkable and should not be disregarded in total because of the jury’s verdict.”

Weinstein’s lawyers say 'remarkable accomplishments' warrant light prison sentence

I'm ready for anything - could be a strict sentencing (I hope so) or could be lenient or somewhere in the middle. All this pre-sentencing PR crap is on my nerves. It's in the judge's hands, not the public's.

Whatever he gets, he still faces more charges in LA and the UK. His soiled and spoiled reputation will be on display for the rest of his life, whether he gets a long sentence tomorrow or not.

I hope he is not suicidal, but I do hope he serves his time in jail like the criminal he is.

Weinstein Appealed to Bezos and Bloomberg for Help, Documents Show

Jan Ransom

...
In the days following news reports about how he used his power to sexually assault women, Harvey Weinstein made a desperate plea for help in emails to two dozen influential people, including the billionaires Michael Bloomberg and Jeff Bezos.

That detail was revealed on Monday in a trove of previously sealed court documents that offered a look into the days and weeks that followed the Hollywood mogul’s downfall.

Mr. Weinstein and his public relations team scrambled to craft a response to the allegations in October 2017. He promised to enter into a counseling program for sex addicts, and he did. “Allow me to resurrect myself with a second chance,” he wrote in one email.
A month later, in a scathing letter, his brother, Bob Weinstein, called Mr. Weinstein a sexual predator and an abusive person who belonged in “hell.”
...
A few days after that, responding to a question from a gossip columnist, Mr. Weinstein alluded to having been sexually abused as a child. Then, a few weeks later, in a self-pitying, unpublished letter, he said he was suicidal.

The emails and other communications provided insight into the effort by Mr. Weinstein and his representatives to portray him as a troubled man who badly wanted to right his wrongs. They also showed his deeply fractured relationship with his brother and his attempts to silence those who sought to expose him.
In one email, Mr. Weinstein suggested that the actress Jennifer Aniston — who he believed had complained about him — should be killed. And even as he endeavored to repair his reputation and excuse his behavior, his communications on the matter were often self-centered, unapologetic, and at times, patronizing.
...

Other documents that are part of the unsealed records reveal that if Weinstein had decided to testify in his own defense, prosecutors were prepared to call 11 witnesses to rebut his self-serving claims.

Prosecutors also planned to cross-examine Weinstein over allegations that he used a friend’s social security number without permission to obtain a passport in 1998, and that an employee used a pen to jab him in the stomach when Weinstein, while naked, allegedly grabbed her breasts in London during the late 1990s.

Wow, his brother really laid into him. Many folks had such contempt for Harvey over the years, and it all exploded in 2017. An epic Hollywood bubble burst.

So, I am guessing that the brother won't be called to testify to what a great guy HW is. Nor will his ex wife, or his adult children, who have disowned him.

Is there anyone, not on the payroll to HW, who would say anything nice about him? Wow.

Harvey Weinstein forced employees to get him prostitutes, lie to his wife: court papers
“He got a lot of joy by demeaning people,” the woman claimed in court filings. “If you opened the door for him, he would turn and say, ‘What the f--k are you looking at? Don’t f---ing look at me.’”.....
The 31st person prosecutors spoke with claimed he “was verbally abused by the defendant, who, at a morning meeting threw a table full of food on top of him" in the late 1980s.....
In 2013, Weinstein threatened to physically hurt an employee and “made him get out of the car on the side of the road, and abandoned him while on a business trip outside of the United States,” according to the memo....
One man who worked for the ex-Tinseltown titan in 2007 said he was forced to get prostitutes for Weinstein, who he added would often scream in his employees’ faces at close range. Another person told investigators the producer stole his Social Security number in 1998 to apply for a second passport.

~I hope the judge reads over these statements. HW deserves to rot in prison.

And exactly WHY does he deserve mercy? Because of his “fall from grace”? That the biggest, fattest load of horse **** that I’ve ever heard.

Was he ever graceful? Did anybody really respect him?

HW brought this on himself. Problem is it took too long for women to feel comfortable enough to stand up to him and speak out.

I’m glad we are finally evolving past his cave man thinking.

Lock this guy up already! (for as long as the law allows)

It's really quite a sight to behold, all of the women who testified against Harvey Weinstein seated together in the front row. For each of these six women, there are at least 13 more who have accused Weinstein of rape or sexual assault.

Weinstein’s rows are empty.

Fingers crossed for the max sentence (but braced for news it will be less).

In court now:

Jan Ransom on Twitter

#MiriamHaley addressed the court at #HarveyWeinstein's sentencing: "He had crushed a part of my spirit. If he was not convicted of rape & sexual assault by this jury it would have happened again & again. I'm relieved there are women who are safer because he is not out there."

Hey guys, good morning so as I’m sitting here watching HW get out of his car and walk up to the courthouse without using his walker or wheelchair-it’s a miracle-, I’ve come to realize I want him to pay for all the ones who got away with doing what he has done, especially the ones who ended the innocence of a child. I didn't watch the creeps trial, will there be cameras in the courtroom?
