CA - Hostage situation at Trader Joe’s in Los Angeles, 21 July 2018

A hostage situation is underway at a Trader Joe's in Los Angeles after a suspect being chased by police jumped out of their car and ran into the store on Saturday afternoon.

The vehicle was seen wrapped around a pole and police rescued a woman who was left behind.

LAPD are working to evacuate employees and customers, including small children, with at least one person seen fleeing with injuries.

Police have SWAT vehicles in position and an emergency triage area set up as the situation continues.

They are believed to be in contact with the suspect.

Shooting Suspect At Silver Lake Trader Joe's Shot Grandmother And Girlfriend In South L.A., Police Say

A police pursuit ended in the Silver Lake area at a Trader Joe's with shots fired and a suspect inside on Saturday afternoon.

When Newschopper4 Bravo arrived over the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m., the pursuit vehicle was visible, crashed into a pole.

"(The suspect) jumped out of the car and it looked like he shot some rounds off when he got out of the car," Dan Zito, who said he was only feet away from the crash, said. "And (the police) returned some fire at him, but he ran straight in [to the Trader Joe’s]."

Moments later, LAPD approached the vehicle and rescued one person that was left behind in the pursuit vehicle.

A writer for Jimmy Kimmel live has shared his experience of the situation on Twitter @thatdevinfield he was walking into the store when the gunman appeared.

“Devin Field said on Twitter he was about to enter the Trader Joe's when the man's car crashed into a street lamp outside.

'I was walking in when he crashed into the entrance and got out shooting,' he said.

'I ducked behind the four-foot retaining wall in the parking lot and three LAPD officers ran over, knelt behind it right next to me and opened fire.'

Field says others who had been evacuated said the gunman 'walked in shooting', demanded a jumper and a phone, and moved the remaining hostages to the back of the store.

An employee told him there was 'blood all over the floor', but they did not know where it'd come from.”

Update: The gunman is believed to be inside Trader Joe's and might be wounded. Law enforcement sources told The Times they did not believe he was holding hostages but said there still might be some people hiding in the store. (link: https://lat.ms/2Lzm1lN) lat.ms/2

UPDATE: Earlier today, officers went in pursuit of a suspect wanted in connection to a shooting. At the termination of the pursuit, an officer involved shooting occurred, and the suspect has barricaded himself inside a #TraderJoes in #Silverlake.
