Absolutely not a suicide. He was not aware when approaching the island that there is a reef you cannot see unless the tide is out. Search the news and you will see photos of the canoe broken in half. This was tragic accident and a huge loss for all who knew him.

I take it back, my initial feeling. I was not aware that everyone was out trying to solve the treasure hunt when he went missing. My thoughts are with the family and friends of this young man.

I’m so sad for his family and part of me feels bad that they had to spoil his clue to the treasure hunt. He sounds like a neat kid.

I love what this young man was doing... a creative, intelligent, outdoor treasure hunt. I hope he is recovered soon.

This is truly heartbreaking. He was such an intelligent, accomplished, sweet young man. His family must be so devastated with the outcome. :(

I hope they get some closure. Just having a loved one out there somewhere missing, there's no proper grieving process. Of course it would be miraculous if he was found stranded on a islet.

The search is on for a 21-year-old college student who went missing as he was planning a treasure hunt.

Hunter Lewis has been missing since December 30 after taking his canoe from Trinidad Beach to Flat Rock in California, according to the LA Times.

Family, friends, and authorities have been looking along the coast for Hunter, who was planning a scavenger hunt that cost $10 to join and had 12 clues.

Parts of his wooden treasure bucket were found on Trinidad State Beach, and his dad believes this is no longer a search and rescue but a recovery.

On Jan. 11, Corey Lewis, father of the missing 21-year-old Hunter Lewis, announced on Facebook that the active search for his son was being called off.

Search crews used helicopters, sonar and dive teams to scour the waters from Mad River Beach to Trinidad Head, where Hunter went missing two weeks ago.

“It is time for the family to look for some closure and begin to create space to grieve and heal. Although his body did not come back to us, Hunter will always be with us living in our hearts and our memories. We will be holding both a private and public memorial service here in Humboldt and one down in Long Beach. Details to come later,” Lewis posted on Facebook.

He Planned a Treasure Hunt for the Ages — Until He Went Missing

What an amazing young man! A true stud! Too bad his talent and courage was cut short. His friends and family have so much to be proud about!!!

I was also moved to tears by reading that article. It was beautifully written. You always hear people saying so-and-so was a bright light that was extinguished way too soon but for Hunter this statement rings absolutely true. What an incredible guy.

Details of Disappearance

Lewis was last seen in Humboldt County, California on December 30, 2021. He left his family's home in Blue Lake, California to hide objects for an upcoming treasure hunt he was organizing with friends. He was last seen canoeing near Trinidad Harbor between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. He has never been heard from again.

A broken piece of Lewis's canoe washed ashore at the Martin Creek Trail north of Elk Head on January 1, a few days after his disappearance. This was the only sign of him ever located in spite of an extensive search. It's possible his canoe wrecked off of Flatiron Rock, where there is a shallow, rocky reef whose existence Lewis was unaware of. The water was very cold that day and he did not have a wetsuit.

At the time of his disappearance, Lewis was an aerospace engineering major at California State University, Long Beach. He enjoyed surfing, rock climbing and playing guitar, and was licensed as a pilot and scuba diver. He also had a girlfriend whom he was close to and planned to marry after they graduated college. His dream was to work for NASA. His family believes he's deceased.

Such an emotionally moving case, and analogies to be made to Christopher McCandless.
