You know Lillibet, your comment made me think....I don't think we have discussed this and if we have please forgive me.

Could John be "hiding out" for the sole purpose to make the bankruptcy take longer and to buy time for his wife to be able to make some other arrangements for living? Could it possibly give her another 4-5 years since he cannot be found?

Just a thought!

Unfortunately, my understanding of his bankruptcy (somewhere upthread) is that because he has not come to the scheduled meetings to finalize everything, the bankruptcy reverts to the kind where his wife would lose their house. If he had followed through, I believe they could have kept the house. So disappearing really puts her at a disadvantage as I understand it. I will rummage around on the thread and look for our discussion of this.

I think it was either a suicide or he is running /hiding.

IF it was a suicide, I would think he'd want it to be known. Suicide would be more 'noble' or honorable, in my opinion, than running away from the mess he made and leaving it for his wife to sort out. So it seems to me that IF he had killed himself, he would have left evidence so she could have closure of some kind. Maybe a sweet suicide note replete with an apology and an explanation for the family.

It does not make sense that he would kill himself and try to hide all clues to that final act.

IF he was running and hiding out, then secrecy and privacy makes total sense. I think he might be hiding out in a remote cabin in Humboldt area. Lots of areas are in control of pot growers and LE does not venture there too often, for their own safety.

Quoting my post to follow up on looking for the bankruptcy discussion earlier. Check out posts between 923--957, mostly by sleeperlabs and me. Sleeperlabs is very knowledgable about the bankruptcy process. In one post she said that when a person doesn't finish the process of chapter 7, everything in the estate that would have been protected....residence, retirement, etc...is no longer protected. So, when I said that the bankruptcy reverts to a kind where his wife would lose the house, what I should have said was that Chapter 7 is no longer on the table, so these assets can be liquidated. That means that John disappearing for any reason and missing the last meetings leaves his wife with nothing. There would be no advantage to her at all if he disappeared or commited suicide.

Where sleeperlabs and I diverge is that she thinks JB would not have squirreled away money offshore because she doesn't think he made much on the infomercials. I agree that he didn't make much on the informercials, but I believe he made enough money in previous decades that he could have protected some of it offshore years ago. If he did, disappearing before the meeting would make some sense...to me anyway. Could he intend to send for his wife at some point and start over? Who knows? But that scenario makes much more sense to me than suicide. As I said earlier, I waffle back and forth about this!
