Since they lived less than two miles from the trailhead and it doesn't look like the homes are directly on the road at the end, who saw the vehicle? Maybe someone in a vehicle. If someone saw them at the beginning of Hite Cove Road, they could have been going to their house.

They owned multiple properties in the area so it's complicated, don't think they lived two miles from the trailhead. Maybe someone remembers where their residence was. MOO

I tend to believe EG and JG had a broad interest in the national forest since they owned property in Jerseydale. Here’s a passage from: Overview

Prompt reforestation is desirable to prevent soil erosion and protect water quality in streams and lakes. Untimely r(d)eforestation adversely affects wildlife and fish species and reduces scenic quality and recreational experience. In addition, these areas are less resilient to the effects of fire and make it more difficult to protect surrounding communities.

Has the nanny been identified in the media?

Yes, I know. Two of their four properties are in Darrah (I know the addresses) and the Chron shows a picture of one of the houses in Darrah. So even if they are coming up Hite Cove Road from Darrah, unless it is past their house, who is to say they weren't going to their new house and not the trailhead at that time.

That’s possible, but maybe it was a person in a vehicle or dog-walker coming out from the trailhead (?)
I just pulled up these quotes:
“Sunday, Aug. 15: 7:45 a.m., witness sees the Gerrish/Chung family traveling in their vehicle toward the trailhead, down Hites Cove Road north of Jerseydale in Mariposa County.”

Is this the mention of the backpack occasionally referenced on here?
Yes, if you click on the links in my last post above it’s in LE’s timeline.

Good question - the nanny has not been identified in the media. The ‘friends’ quoted are Rosanna Heaslett and Steven Jeffe. Other people mentioned have been real estate agents or people who ‘knew’ them. AFAIK

Oh no, Sorry! ( and sorry, @Han) I thought it was in those links, my mistake. It was only reported in Fox News or DailyMail? I’ll check to see if it was confirmed in other MSM sources.
I wouldn’t believe everything you read in the DailyMail MOO

Their property is on Hites Cove Road - the information is available online and the date Jon closed the deal is July 2021. It is very near to the place where the vehicle was parked just a couple of miles.

It’s easy enough to find their properties online. Jon bought the property in Hites Cove Road in July 2021. I found four properties owned by JG in and around that area plus the apoartment in San Francisco.

Because they are dead. That's the sad and only answer I have. I am retired. I can research maps until the cows come home. Jon had a full-time, 24/7 demanding job. He was a landlord. He had friends and family all over the world to keep in touch with. He was a new dad. He had Ellen to keep happy, as husbands must. There was Covid AND the adjustment of living in isolation in a rural, remote community.

(I really like @RedHaus and others' theories of Jon researching the mines. That seems like what you would do in your spare time. )

I will always believe, until proven otherwise, this was a spontaneous walk, ill-planned and risky, in the cloud of new parenthood and other distractions. That it was taken without fully understanding the area weather or trails. Perhaps in the way we tend to treat our own neighborhood more cavalierly than a strange place.

I tend to agree with your opinion. Sometimes the answer is really the least complicated. They made some bad decisions.

I agree, and I don’t. I hope Fox and the DM are not the only sources. But I’d think LE might have corrected that information by now if it weren’t true, especially as RH is a witness in this case. LE dispelled the lightning rumours, for example.

Why take the stance that Jon made all the decisions? Why not consider that Ellen was a perfectly intelligent young woman who supported her husband in the decision-making process? Maybe she was responsible for taking care of the rentals? Maybe she was the ‘avid hiker’? She also has friends and family all over the world. She didn’t have a full-time paying job, she was undertaking a programme of study and she had a nanny. She would have time to research the area and be interested in the mining aspects just as much as Jon, maybe more so. Two people making the same bad decisions? I’m not convinced.

I think LE have enough on their hands right now. Which particular information are you referring to?

EC uploading the photo at 6:45 am on that last Sunday.

It doesn’t actually say who reported seeing the photo - just that it was seen by somebody. RH is quoted as saying very little - just that they hiked on weekends and were a nice couple. SJ says he can’t believe what’s happened and ‘guesses’ it must have been a day hike - he doesn’t actually know anything. He was on holiday in Croatia but posted a message on FB asking ‘if anyone had seen Jon and Ellen in the past couple of days’ on the same day their bodies were found. We don’t know who saw the vehicle but assume it was a reliable source. There’s actually very little information and lots of red herrings put out by the media imo. MOO
