I’m trying to understand the older out of towners - how did they find out about the party? They don’t go to high school or college in Truckee - they were described as being from the Bay Area. Posters weren’t on every pole for miles.
Would you let your teenager go to some random party in the dark woods in the family car while you were on vacation out of town?
It didn’t sound like college students that were from Truckee but went to college in SF, etc. More like random out of town older guys? It’s strange.

Word of mouth travels fast, and this party was an annual event, so it was a quagmire of young people and their older friends. Didn’t all of us know folks who were 22 when we were 18? And folks who were 25 when we were 21, etc…? I think it just included a wide circle of locals/graduates and their friends and their friends, etc.

Yes, @Auntie Cipation, I'd hope LE has looked down into each of the bathroom vaults at the campground. While it never resulted in a discovery of a missing person, I recall @RickshawFan on another case suggesting the same. You never know!
Yes, I brought this up in the Dingley case. And.... laugh don't laugh. It has happened! Dial 911 face down in the lav, haha:

Good point.

I keep going back to two things though:

How social/extroverted/well-liked Kiely is.

My personal experiences around teenage girls saying good bye. As a former teenage girl years ago, and a parent of teens. I have boys, but girls are around (haha) and even leaving activities where they would see one another in a few hours? You would think some of these girls were going to be separated for *years*, with all the hugging, waving, shouting as they left lol. (They would even shout things to ME..haha "Byyeeeeee Mrs Beeeeekarina! Bye So and Sooooossssss Mooooooooom! Loooooooove Youuuuuuuuu!"

This is why I have trouble reconciling Kiely just driving off alone, unnoticed. Even if her closest friends had all left, had EVERYONE she knew left her by 12:30-ish?

If so, what else was really up?

This is so true.

I mean, the neighbor kids, who I barely know, do that when they come over to sell us Girl Scout cookies. I put it down to the long Covid isolation and everybody clinging to contact now that they have it again.

These days it's hard to guess why something goes viral.

Maybe some of them were from Truckee and knew about the tradition and location and thought they'd drop by for old times' sake.

Or coincidence: they arranged their own party, maybe after a day of hiking or something, and didn't know about the teen party until they got there.

Or somebody had an older boyfriend/girlfriend who brought their friends along, and their friends brought friends.

Does anyone happen to know Kiely’s birthday? I’m just wondering about the significance (if any) of the tattoo of the 17 she reportedly has on her ribs, since she is 16.

Amateur speculation only.
I vaguely remember reading that she was turning 17 in September. Not 100% sure though.

What do you think would be the significance of turning 17?
The number 17 has a variety of meanings; you can google it. Some rappers have it, and others have it for various spiritual references. Think back when you were a teen and how certain song lyrics had DEEP meaning. Same thing.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Maybe just that the age of 17 may have had some significance to her—an age at which she hoped to leave home? Or, who knows?

Was just thinking out loud.

Have you guys seen this post written by Kiely's mom? Lindsey Nieman: Build your team up; support each other

"But this is not Little House on the Prairie. Sometimes I go crazy having my kids at home with me all the time. Sometimes I lose it and scream at them..."

I think Kiely's home life was more problematic than they are letting on.
I don’t think one sentence from an article can label a home life “problematic”. Moo

Where Kiely lives, at Lost Trail Lodge, there is barely any cell phone service and no WiFi.

It mentions this on a Tahoepedia article (linked below) and also on a Sierra Sun artlcle (also linked below) and a quote is:

"By all accounts the Lost Trail Lodge is a perfect place to drop out of society for a while – cell phone coverage is spotty at best and Internet access is nonexistent.."

I've also read about lack of cell service and no WiFi on a few Google reviews from people who stayed there.

So how did she and her mother text/call each other so often with such reliability? Was there sometimes a delay in the text messages getting through? Was it just luck if they went through?

I can (and have)said the same thing about my property. There are spots if hiking that I will not have service. I have a complex setup that involves antennas, repeaters, routers and switches to enable coverage within my home. It’s also password protected, so visitors would be out of luck here.

Right. But they don't have visitors, they have paying guests/customers, so it's not about being "out of luck".

I'm sure if they could have wifi there, they would. But it's part and parcel of living in a very rural place.

I'm not sure if Kiely ever felt cut off or isolated. So much teenage life revolves around being online these days. Perhaps that's why she spent a lot of her time with friends, in person, and also in the town.

MOO.

Wow. That’s an uplifting and inspiring read. I found this to be an honest and heartfelt description of life in rural Tahoe. Kiely’s mom is a good writer, and a thoughtful person. This makes me sad, now knowing that her daughter is possibly gone forever.
