Dedee, I also expected to learn the COD was: - drowning. We'll have to have patience while waiting for more info.
I was expecting to hear that outcome as well... I'm surprised they didn't release of there was water in her lungs I feel they would want to get that info out there to quiet the rumors

I’d much rather they be thorough and put the whole picture together. IMO

People get lucky all of the time. Many times teens drink and drive leaving parties and don’t get in an accident and somehow get home. Sadly sometimes they do get into accidents and sometimes they are fatal.

I grew up in an area like Kiely. People partied in woods all of the time. People would also accidentally hit things with their cars on the way home, get lost… I even knew someone that did accidentally drive into the bay because they thought the road that led to a dock continued on (he was ok) … but by the grace would make it home. with all of the drinking and driving there was one fatality in the county during my time in high school and it happened on a road the person was highly familiar with in a spot many people travel and hadn’t crashed before.

If Kiely was involved in a conspiracy created by friends I’ll be saddened to hear it. However a lot of the conversation here seems to be grasping at straws hoping this wasn’t just an accident related to it being dark, substances being involved, people making poor decisions that ended tragically.
Not grasping at straws and never thought or mentioned conspiracy. Just thinking of possibilities. I certainly hope no one intentionally caused this. But no examples of any other incidents or non incidents apply here. This girl, this incident, and this place are not those other people, incidents, or places. It stands alone. What facts are known apply only to this incident and environment. LE must have so much more to go by. They have even said where the car was found may not be a clue to where it went into water. May have gone in somewhere totally unexpected. What is mostly being assumed is it went off a boat ramp. We dont know things like toxicology (which may be affected by her time in water). Maybe someone slipped her 542 in a drink. Maybe she did not send that last text, someone used her phone. Just speculation. Maybe IT IS just a tragic accident. But LE has so many things to consider before ruling on this. Either way a young teen is gone forever

Autopsy Results

When a death appears to be from natural causes, the cause of death may be available after 2 p.m. the day following the death. However, when the death is the result of a homicide, suicide, accident, and in many natural deaths, the cause of death may not be available for 16 to 20 weeks due to delays in forensic testing and the receipt of medical records. This does not delay release of the body. The body may be released to a funeral home as soon as the autopsy is completed.

Hopefully we'll get more information sooner than 16 to 20 weeks but it does appear that it's not unusual for the COD to be delayed. Maybe it will get pushed faster due to Kiely's case being high profile.

I’m still curious about parking. If the beach was used as a parking area, I can easily see a scenario that ties some of the loose ends together: she backs out of a spot near the water, decides she wants to check one more time with S just in case she needs a ride after all, but doesn’t put the car in park while she makes the call; forgets she’s in gear after the call, pulls her foot off the brake, and the car moves into the water unexpectedly. It’s one of the few scenarios I can come up with that can link together the final call to S (ex “I’m literally pulling out right now… last chance if you need a ride”) and the short timeline between the final call and phone going dead (but yeah, I know the alleged times of those 2 activities don’t make sense, either).

I’m still not ruling out foul play, FWIW. Lots of gaps in information available to the public at this point.

Anything is possible these days but if the timeline is true and KR did call her friend at 12:30am or even a few minutes before that and her phone last pinged at 12:33am, then it seems very unlikely someone was able to commit a murder and then dispose of her inside the vehicle and into the water in 3 to 6 minutes unless it was a quick gunshot which then would make no sense at all.

The timings you mention, really hits home I guess - 180 seconds minimum from talking to her friend and then being submerged in water :( makes me think she dropped her phone after her call and was looking for it, possibly how and why she was in the lake.

Very sad case, thoughts and condolences with Kiely's family and friends.

Is the campground or that part of the lake in Nevada County?
Yes it is @Curiosa20.

I was getting confused as to why both Placer and Nevada Sheriff departments are involved with this case, and now I know, I think! The Lost Trail Lodge is in Placer county, and for the moment, I am going to presume KR lived in Placer County, CA near or at the lodge. But the Prosser Campground, Prosser Reservoir and Truckee are all located in Nevada County, CA.

There could be more to that explanation - so others more local, please chime in if I'm missing something.

I’m not sure I follow what you’re saying about how a fatality scene stands alone. Do you mean that Kiely’s incident should be viewed and investigated in isolation, without looking to similar accidents/incidents to understand what happened in this one?

If a dead man is found in an open field with a knife sticking out of his back, it seems normal to think “Every other previous case I know of where a decedent had a knife sticking out his back, it was a homicide. Therefore, this is a homicide.” If you had to view it ‘stand alone’ without any reliance on similar facts/incidents, you’d have to investigate every possibility as though it was a situation never before encountered. Did a knife drop out of a plane while the decedent was laying on his stomach? Was a knife poking out of the ground and the decedent fell backwards onto it?

I don’t know how you can investigate a fatality scene without being constantly informed by past similar situations.

I have read mystery novels with similar "plots" as to that. I've always wondered how anyone would be able to wedge anything against a gas pedal and not get caught in the car themselves as the engine is racing and the vehicle is trying to move.

Same here re the novels, I love crime fiction.
My guess would be to get the vehicle as near to water as possible first, wind down the window, turn off ignition and exit the vehicle, wedge down the pedal and put the car in 1st or drive, shut the door, put your arm through and turn on ignition and away the car goes.
Obviously this is just my imagination and you would need other factors to be near perfect top, like flat ground so the car doesn't roll with the handbrake off before you're ready, and the luck of a leprechaun on your side for good measure.

My reply was to an original post mentioning possible numerous other non fatal " accidents" could have happened there. Such as hitting trees, denting someone else's car, etc. This was in response to my statement of no other fatalities or non- fatalities ever, with cars going into lake despite allegedly years of teens partying there. You cant compare fender benders to a girl somehow ending up submerged in the lake in her car. How did this happen? It would seem it's not an easy mistake to make since no one else in her age range or any age has done it over allegedly several years.
It's also not akin to someone murdered by stabbing in back. Neither would this situation apply to other cars going into water if they went off a highway bridge in an accident or even if a person drove into one off a dock or ramp if the topography is nothing like this one. Or if someone was high on whatever and mistook something for an exit route somewhere else. We just don't know enough facts or if she even went off a ramp, if ramps are or are not clearly marked, if she was driving under the influence. Basically that's what I meant, we dont know if we have same facts to judge by, and we have no history of this ever happening at Prosser Reservoir. I think we all really just want to know what happened and really care so much. Apparently it's not obvious yet to LE exactly what happened here.

I can understand the speculation that she couldn't have made a wrong turn because she was so familiar with the area but I think that could very well be what happened. A few months ago I was on my way to a noon meeting. I was on a major highway I had driven hundreds of time, going to a building I had been to dozens of time. I was deep in thought about the meeting and somehow I missed my turn and had driven 10 more miles before I even realized it. It was a beautiful day and visibility was perfect yet I missed the turn. I think KY, with only a few months driving experience, possibly impaired, driving in the dark, she could very easily have made a terrible mistake.
I’ll add my experience with my own child who is a few weeks older than Kiely and has lived in this town for 9 years. When she started diving at 16 she was absolutely clueless where things were. Like the grocery store we always go to, the field where my other kids have played soccer for years and even how to get to her own high school. I think it’s mostly due to kids being on their phones all the damn time and not really paying attention when someone else is driving. She got her license in October and still asks me how to get to Target 5 miles away.

I was not surprised at all that it was not told if there was water in her lungs or not.
Bare with me here, they said early on that they were not getting a lot of tips. We have not seen a lot come out as far as pictures and videos from the party which is a bit weird because people literally take pictures and or videos of their every move these days and share on the social media of choice.
If they still lack incoming tips and people talking, the silence could very well be so they can monitor who does what during this time. See if anyone they know who WAS at the party or parties slips up and speaks out on social or any other way.

If they came straight out and said "There was no water in her lungs" this would lead this case into a murder investigation which would make people clam up even more. So IF and I say IF the lungs did not have water in them, this could buy more time for the investigators to ensure no one clams up.

BUT....
The silence in not stating of water was present or not in the lungs could be withheld at the request of her family OR because she is a minor.

Her family has not been very vocal during the situation. And after she was located and confirmed, they released a single statement. I know we have followed many high-profile cases and we are used to many of those with very active family members doing media of all kinds, but her family may simply be very private, and they have every right be as private as they wish to be. As much as I, and many others want answers, even if it's a short answer, we have to accept we may never be privy at all, even to a simple statement to allow the public to know the cause of death.

It's not enough to publish the slogan "don't drink and drive." Youth believe they are invincible and it won't happen to them or they are too young to die. This is typical of the thought process of a young brain.
True words. Three years ago I was an idiot and thought it would be a good idea to drive to get food after way too many whiskeys. After I was arrested, I bought a police grade breathalyzer and was stunned at how few drinks it takes to bypass the legal limit. It made me realize that when I was much younger, there were way too many times out with friends that I should not have been driving. (I've nailed my OVI plate to the wall underneath where I hang my car keys as a reminder never, ever again).

Very sorry to hear the outcome of this case. I'm impressed by the posters who predicted this scenario from day one. I was inclined to think foul play.

How did the police not find her initially, in the very place where her cell phone pinged last? And not just her but her entire car?! It's so sad that a volunteer group found her in a few hours versus 2 weeks of searching from LE. Has there been any reporting on why they didn't search Prosser lake more?

I was looking at the damage to Kiely's SUV again, and the dents are puzzling.

When I was wondering, "Hey could someone else have hit her, smacked the mirror and dented her car?" And "Did she hit something?" I remembered I have pics from when a kid ran a stop sign at low speed and smacked another SUV into my old Honda in pretty much the same spot.

Dents go IN. (Yes, this was a major pain, no injures, yay Honda!)

The dent on her door bulges outward. I think her vehicle might have been on its side in the lake?

Excerpts from NCIB article on difficulties of determining definitively cause of death as drowning in submerged decedent – WARNING - Descriptions and photographs may be extremely disturbing for some of us.

I post the link solely to verify the source and to express my own opinion that all who are working to ascertain the Kiely’s COD do so in extremely difficult circumstances. May the Great Spirit guide them and comfort all those who love Kiely.

BBM

“...Leaching of blood out through open wounds and decompositional changes may make differentiation between antemortem versus postmortem injury difficult or impossible…"

“...In bodies without significant decomposition or prolonged resuscitation, the typical findings associated with drowning are more easily identified…"

“...Special Tests for Drowning

With the knowledge that drowning fluid diffuses across the alveolar-capillary membrane and into the blood with active circulation during the drowning process, various tests have been developed in attempts to quantify a number of diffused substances in order to aid in the diagnosis of drowning. While studies utilizing these tests abound, efforts to develop a single, validated, widely available, cost-efficient, and timely diagnostic test that is highly reliable, sensitive, and specific for drowning, particularly in cases of prolonged submersion and decomposition, are ongoing. Such a test would be of immense value as it could help differentiate deaths due to drowning versus those caused by other means followed by dumping of the body into a body of water for concealment in order to mimic the appearance of an accidental drowning. Therefore, currently, the diagnosis of drowning is one that is based largely on accrued supportive autopsy findings with the exclusion of other causes of death, interpreted within the context of features of the death circumstances. Moreover, a reliable test that consistently and reliably differentiates freshwater from saltwater drowning remains elusive, which otherwise could be of importance for confirming the drowning location. Prolonged submersion with decomposition adds another dimension of diagnostic difficulty (88)…"

Interesting.

We probably need a body shop guy to give an opinion on that.

See what you mean. though.

Maybe I’m not seeing what you’re seeing, but it looks normal to me based on the contour of the door.

Do we know for sure she knows THIS area? I see over and over again that “she knew the area, she was local.” I also thought it was going to take her 30-40 mins to get home from the party? Has she been to this exact place before? Just because she’s relatively close to it doesn’t mean she’s been to this exact spot before, and judging from the map, there are a lot of little turns and roads there IMO. I don’t think we can assume she was familiar with the area just because she lived fairly close. I live near tons of parks but don’t have all their roads memorized.

moo
Actually from the maps at this location (party and where her car was found) there are only two forks in the two roads. Where did you get 30 to 40 minutes. I believe she said she would be home in 45 mins. meaning that she was going to leave later than expected hence her curfew extension from her mother (the discussion she had on the phone with her mom.) Its only a short distance to her family's hotel/lodge. I think its only 12 mins from the the campground and the campground is next or very close to the party site. We've been told by various media that she and her family were familliar with the campground.

I was curious what would cause an outward dent.

It doesn't seem likely to me that someone hit her car on that side, at least.

So maybe it is damage from retrieving her vehicle?
