Tomorrow's (supposed to be) the day! Linked below so people can find it easily tomorrow @ 12:01am PST. lol I'm joking about the time. I don't know if they can set up youtube to automatically change a member's only vid to public when the clock strikes midnight, or if it's a manual thing they need to do when they get around to it. I know what I'll be watching with my morning coffee. :D And then we can freely discuss! I'm looking forward to that. :)

ETA that @ForensicToxicologist said it would be 6am PST. I'm not going to be awake at that hour any more than I was going to be at midnight. :p

Here’s my take on why AWP is releasing this info. They have no faith in the police department.

I’ve seen the video of the transducer picking up the car. Its a 2D Image that a $400 fishing graph would show clear as day. There’s no massive boulders in the immediate area, therefore there’s no reason to think the lake bed would contain them. Anyone with a fishing graph made after 2005ish would see it.

Add in a downscan and side scan technology and you can make out objects in real time. You’d be able to clearly see tires and the car structure. You can pick them up for 1,500 or less from bass pro shop, most fisherman have them. Prosser sheriff was out there with 15k drones and saw nothing or overlooked it.

IMO, it’s such gross negligence on their part AWP probably feels like they’re over looking the information they added in their video. And honestly as someone who uses these graphs all the time, I can’t say they’re wrong. There’s little interpretation on something that size in that shallow of water.

The second they find the car, they all are Speechless that it was missed and I think the distrust started there.

Attached is a $1,100 graph showing what side scan looks like at 145’. In 15’ it’d be even clearer, especially in such a clear lake. These graphs even have the ability to map out lake beds, showing you exactly what’s been scanned and what hasn’t. There’s no excuse outside of incompetence.
My husband has a boat and loves to fish In the bayous and bay. He has a ”fish finder” and always uses it. Our waterways are fairly dark and murky. It’s amazing how you can see numerous underwater things. I showed his the pics of the underwater car found by AWP. He believed any fair to good device should be able to see something that big.

IMO AWP is just stating what they see just like the people who have gone to Prosser Res and have driven around videoing the scene of the party and where KR may or may not have driven. Nothing these people observed is any different than AWP saying what they observed. IMO AWP didn’t insert themselves into an investigation or reveal some evidence that will hamper any case. They are very good at what they do and probably have some knowledge from all the vehicles they’ve seen as to suspicious or foul play or accident. Maybe they don’t know for certain but they could have a little more knowledge than the average person who doesn’t do this sort of thing. I imagine they make it very clear to everyone involved that they are filming in order to send out a video after. That must have been understood beforehand in order to film private citizens. Regardless, I’m glad they found her and I’m glad we were able to see how the windows were before the car was lifted out because I know there has been a lot of discussion on here about that. I think it gave us a little more information. I am really curious about the roadside guy and whether his story actually turns out to be true and if so, was it KR who he helped or just someone that looked like her.
That's all well and good, sort of, but that is not my concern. I'll quote myself:
"They aren't involved in any forensics and shouldn't be commenting on this specific case at this time."

I think AWP are playing a very dangerous game. Jagger and Sami have already fallen victim to countless online abuse and AWP are fanning the flames.

It should be extremely easy to verify whether it was Kiely's car the recovery was called for. Even if the video and audio are locked away securely, you'd think there would be a log of the vehicle registration number and time of the inbound call, on a system you can access right away. A paper trail.

FWIW they’ve said it will go public at 6:00am PST... Not that I’m counting down the hours or anything ;)

Yes, I can see how a videographer is needed to document their recoveries so they their videos can be used as evidence and in legal matters....but when they start to try and sensationalize their work for 'clicks and likes' it cheapens their organisation and their work, and they may lose the huge respect and admiration they've built up.

MOO.
I assume one has to pay to be a member? So releasing the video to members first is a fundraiser, along with clicks and likes. I don’t love this, but I know they need funding to keep doing what they do. I hope they discussed with the family (and LE) first. I suspect the video is just a documentary of sorts - I’m not sure anything new will be exposed. But ya never know…

There is some discussion about the car in neutral because the wheels were moving when the car was brought out of the water. Wouldn't LE put it in neutral to tow it out? I thought that is common practice?
With the engine off the wheels will freely turn in either direction, in any gear except for park. They would have turned in Drive, Reverse, or Neutral as long as the engine is not running. There's a post back in the thread where this was explained by a Honda Master Service Tech. jmo

This evidently is the current state of YouTube and other platforms.

Way different from anything we have been used to in the past but I guess that is the way that channels/people like AWP and others can profit from what they are doing. And if they don't profit there is no incentive for them to keep doing it.

Notice the ads everywhere.

Nevada County Sheriff's Office

Earlier this week we had the opportunity to meet with Adventures With Purpose (AWP) to debrief lessons learned from the search for Kiely Rodni. Their expertise in handling dozens of cases like this throughout the Country was extremely helpful. We appreciate their humble approach to providing us with information and tools that will allow us to improve our capabilities. This was an extremely beneficial debrief and we are appreciative of the time that they invested in this case. Keep up the great work, AWP!

BAM!! This is what I like to see!

I snipped to reply to these two points you made.

My understanding is the tow truck driver did not realize Kiely was missing until some time had passed, and then put things together and reported it. So, he probably had a lot of incoming and outgoing calls, and if you think about it, how would he know which random phone number was associated? Law enforcement would be able to figure that out, but unless the guy went on the call and realized it was a possible sighting of a missing person that same day, maybe they would be able to scroll through their phone ? I think that's asking a lot from someone who probably has how many random numbers on a cellphone. He might even delete them periodically too. Why would he save them?

I believe there is more specific information in the full video, which might clear some things up about the timelines. Hopefully!

If he thought he saw someone who could have been Kiely, and he thought he saw her CRV, then no harm searching Boca. AWP found both Kiely and her vehicle quickly.
Excellent post!

Realistically, it's quite a leap for a crew of civilians to go from diving for trinkets and cell phones in their spare time to confronting the reality of a deceased 16 y/o young lady in the back of a sunken car. Perhaps LE should more closely liaise with volunteers/civilian groups to help them navigate things. Or more experienced groups could mentor newly formed teams. These things are so delicate for families. jmo
And....yet...these civilians found Kiely.

If I remember correctly, this is their first ongoing and not cold case. I would think dealing with families is very different. Kiely's family is raw and grieving. But in their other cases, families are grateful to have closure after so many years of not knowing. AWP is amazing and pretty tough to be all things to everyone in a new type of search. I would just say to cut them some slack so they can continue the work. They will never unsee the things they saw when they found Kiely.
Bravo! Well said!

My nephew is missing (3 1/2 months) if he were found by AWP I would be so so so grateful. MOO is we can't miss the mark they were called in by LE and they found Kiely.

AWP Dave Bishop said they searched Boca and other sites because they were in 10 mile radius.

Wow! A family representative had to request that portion of the video be removed due to sensitive nature of the phone call.
This is not new. In some of the previous cases the families opted not to be involved and/or didn't want to be seen/heard in the video. AWP always respects families' wishes. Phone calls informing the families are bound to be emotional.

  • #576
I think there are other cases were police didn't search out far enough. Is that the case? Not considering how far a car can drift/float?

Is discussing the tow truck driver allowed?

I'm assuming so, since he was in the preview, and that is permitted?

I removed my earlier comment about him, but since it seems we are allowed to discuss:

As others have since shared, when I have used a service such as AAA, they contract out to a local company. i.e. I called AAA, they took my information and let me know they would be calling XYZ local company and XYZ company would contact me. Fairly recently, I was with a friend when they somehow locked their keys inside the car during a heavy rainstorm. I called AAA. We waited inside a local business for around an hour. The tow driver called me sometime after I spoke with AAA to confirm I still needed help, and to let me know he was a at that time, a few miles away helping someone else but would be there soon. He took my name, established I was a passenger in my friend's vehicle, took the license plate, model and make, and asked where I was/would be, since we were not in the vehicle, and it was a bad storm. As he approached, he called again and met us at the car.

I assume he had a dash cam, etc. He was extremely professional. I know anything is possible in today's world, but I personally would hope a tow truck driver would not fabricate something like this? There would be a lot of evidence proving he responded to a call to assist someone matching Kiely's description, and vehicle?

I don't know how much else we can discuss of the tow driver, so I will wait for the full tape to say more. Basically, I feel he is credible. I think it is possible his tip may have been lost in the mix due to timing, and law enforcement being flooded with tips at that time, and hopefully law enforcement now has anything and everything the tow truck company would have been able to provide.
your tow truck driver does not sound like this specific tow truck driver in this case. This one is not even sure if it was Friday, Sat or Sun.

You took the words right out of my mouth !!
I was trying to post something similar to this, using the right words.

Your post sums it up exactly how I feel.

And....yet...these civilians found Kiely.

I don’t think that their competence is in question. However, there are areas where someone might question their judgement.

One is: their first reaction seems to have been to tell everyone that they’d found KR. Sure, it was unimaginable that it would be someone else—but still, in my opinion, they should have expressed themselves more cautiously. (They seemed to have adjusted what they said, by the next morning.)

And then there’s the “Murder or Accident” headline on their video-advertisement. That seems unjustifiable, again in my opinion. (If they’re that hard-up for money, they should start by accepting rewards!)

All this MOO.
