GUILTY CA - Killer targeting the homeless (3 dead, 2 hurt), San Diego, July 2016 *Arrest*

  • #41
OMG, I didn't know he bought the fire starting supplies there! I didn't know what he bought or how they were linking him for sure to the fire. I guess at first I wanted to block out some of the horrifying details.

rsbm

I don't think you were blocking out any details, I believe the identification of the supplies he bought is newly released information. I assumed they had good reason to identify this specific guy as the person of interest, but I've been reading everything I can about these crimes, and that was news to me. Makes perfect sense now as to why LE was so sure that this is who they're looking for.

I'm not saying that mental illness won't come into play here, but this doesn't sound at all like someone who is legally insane. He sounds truly evil & his actions are premeditated and purposeful.

I'm so worried and scared for those who find themselves, for whatever reason, with no safe place to stay :(

In the most recent attack near Horton Plaza on Wednesday morning the suspect placed a burning towel, apparently soaked in flammable liquid, over a 23-year-old homeless man.

(...)

A resident of the nearby Park Row condominiums, who did not want to be named, told the San Diego Union Tribune that he witnessed part of the attack after a banging noise woke him.

“It sounded like a stick hitting a wall ... four or five bangs.”

He looked out and saw a what he thought was a blanket on the ground. A man approached it and sprayed something from what might have been an aerosol can, igniting the blanket, before fleeing on foot.

“I can’t get it out of my mind – seeing that guy light that other guy on fire. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it,” he said. He called the assailant’s movements “quick” and “intentional”.

These attacks and murders are despicable! The homeless population must be so worried right now :( As if they don't have enough hardship to deal with on a daily basis.

This guy is brazen. He sets people on fire and simply runs off. That's risky. In some of the images he also looks straight at the camera. He doesn't seem worried that he might be recognized. Not a local?

An interview with the clerk from the store here:
http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...spect-Fire-Supplies-Speaks-Out-385505941.html

"Elliot told NBC 7, the man in the surveillance video bought a gas can, one gallon of fuel, a lighter and gum.
“He was kind of nervous and a fast talker so I made a joke with him. Kind of like, 'you talk too fast' but he was kind of looking at me funny,” Elliott said.
"
It would be worth the cashier to try to work with a LE's sketch artist so they would have a face to go with the other pics. Someone has to recognize him!

I hope the photos have been shown everywhere and passed around. It's not like all homeless people know each other and odds are most of them don't have access to the internet or a TV.

My hunch is he's not a local.

I've sometimes wondered why take on the responsibility of a dog when you're homeless, but now see it from another angle. I hope this killer, while trying to set another human on fire, meets up with a big fiercely protective dog that rips killer's nose and big ears off.

San Diego Homeless Worried After Series Of Assaults
Wednesday, July 6, 2016
http://www.kpbs.org/news/2016/jul/06/san-diego-homeless-worried-after-series-assaults/

Officers responded around 5 a.m. Wednesday after residents in a condo complex near the downtown federal courthouse on Broadway and State Street reported a disturbance. They saw a man crouching over a victim who was on fire, and then the assailant ran away.

The unidentified victim, who was sleeping in the area alone, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

"I'm going to change my habits, you know," Stevenson said. "I just got to get some good sleep in the day time, and at night we just got to figure out what goes on at night. But the person I sleep next to, he has a dog that growls and alerts what goes on."

John ... 57, recently lost his spot in a shelter and broke into tears talking about the violence targeting the homeless.

"It's very scary. You don’t know," he paused to swallow a sob. "You don't know when you're going to get attacked. You don't know what's going to happen when you live out here."

An official with Father Joe's said Wednesday the nonprofit was looking for funding to offer an additional 100 beds for the homeless until the suspect is caught. The temporary cots are typically used during bad weather.

I agree. I think he if was a local, some one would have recognized him. He had to be walking around the encampments long enough to choose his victims. I really hope someone is taking fliers and pictures all through the areas off the grid, because they are not going to see it on tv or the internet. Someone needs to find some witnesses and warn these poor potential victims. They are like sitting ducks right now.

I find his choice of a bright green cap kind of odd. It seems like it would be easy for a family member or friend to recognize............I hope so anyway!

It's almost like he wants to be seen. He's making no effort to hide his face.

They're trying to circulate flyers to the homeless, but yes, it's not like they all live in the same location. This guy hasn't made any moves in the east county that I know of, but he gets around some, not just one spot in downtown. Is he driving a car or using public transit? Did they have any video of when he left the store with his fire supplies?

He stood out for being over-dressed for the warm weather. That may indicate he really isn't from around here. Plus pale skin might mean he doesn't get as much sun as a local person.
I would think the store clerk might be able to say whether he sounded like a local.

Is he fearless enough to stick around town and try it again?

Volunteers from Father Joe's Villages circulated fliers in downtown San Diego on Wednesday with photos of the man police believe is responsible for two homicides and two brutal assaults targeting homeless men.

Did Elliot or a store camera see where the man went as he exited the store with his gas can? Was there a gas pump for the fuel? Did he have a car? This article doesn't say.

Store Clerk Who Sold Man Fire Supplies Speaks Out
Elliot says he sold a man a gas can, gas and a lighter just before the crime happened.

Locals have been urged to get these pics out to the public. I figure even if this suspect is not from the area, if the pic gets out maybe someone living states away might recognize him (or her).

The nose is what I think is called a ski-jump nose. Also it looks like a mark on the nose.
Could have bought that hat and the whole outfit at a thrift store. I wonder where this person was staying if they're from out of town -- a hostel, motel, out amongst the homeless? Described as talking fast and nervous, but not nervous enough to not set a man on fire.
The whole city is in an uproar. We have to catch this monster.

Another local checking in...I live in the downtown SD area, very near Horton Plaza. This is just terrible! I have some issues with the homeless, such as their squatting in the stairwells of my apartment building (they poop in there, ugh), smoking crack or whatever in the elevator, and pulling weapons on my young son. However, I wish none of them harm.

This killer needs to be found ASAP! I'm keeping my eyes peeled.

Does anyone have a link to the flier that is being distributed to the homeless? I'd like to hang some on my block...maybe in the stairwell too.

Eta- I feel like my post may have come out in a self centered way. Apologies if that's the case. My focus right now is on stopping this horrible killer, NOBODY deserves this.

News10 news at 11 p.m. answered a question I just posted. They're reporting that authorities think this suspect is using the bus or trolley to get around. LE can start looking for camera video from transit sites. Now I figure they also need to find out if this suspect stayed overnight in a motel or hostel near public transportation. .

News segment not uploaded yet.

This info makes me think this killer is local. Not that it's hard to use public transit, but I think one would have to be comfortable with the system to use it in a crime spree. He could have timed his attacks to coincide with an escape via scheduled trolley or bus stops.

Miscellaneous thought racing through my mind:

Plus someone must have seen him on the bus or trolley. Where does he go right after his attack? If he got on a bus or trolley you'd think suspect would be reeking of fuel and smoke.

If he purchased that hat in a thrift store here in town a clerk might remember that hat or jacket.

The more I look at that close-up pic I realize those aren't sideburns, but more like a pixie cut. Very feminine nose too, but big ears. What do you see?

I wish I had the exact times of the attacks and exact locations to figure out which buses the suspect took, but I'll leave that up to LE.

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loc...ch-for-Homeless-Serial-Killer--385765201.html

1) On Sunday Angelo De Nardo, 53, was found killed and set on fire along Morena Boulevard, east of Interstate 5, homicide investigators said.

2) On Monday, another man was found dead on Bacon Street in Ocean Beach.

3) Also Monday, a homeless man was injured in an attack in the Midway area near Greenwood and Kurtz streets.

4) Then, at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, an SDPD officer found the fourth man suffering "significant injuries" to his upper torso at State and West E Streets, near condos and the federal courthouse.

(There's a map that shows locations of 6 recent attacks in San Diego County)

It takes me awhile to fully grasp all the details. I didn't realize these were happening in the early mornings.

#2 and #3 the two happening on July 4th are close in locations. Did he take a bus or even walk? Changed from burning victim to stabbing. Who is this evil monster?

http://www.cbs8.com/story/32381766/another-homeless-man-attacked-downtown-suspect-at-large

#1 The body of the first victim in the series, 53-year-old Angelo De Nardo of San Diego, was found in flames in an open area off the 2700 block of Morena Boulevard in Bay Park about 8 a.m. Sunday. An autopsy determined that he had been killed prior to being set ablaze. Police have declined to release his cause of death.

Witnesses to that attack told investigators they saw a man running across nearby Interstate 5, carrying a gas can.

#2 Shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, transient Manuel Mason, 61, was found bleeding from stab wounds to his upper body in the 3700 block of Greenwood Street, near Valley View Casino Center in the Midway district. He was hospitalized in critical condition but was expected to survive.

#3 Less than 90 minutes later, another drifter, 41-year-old Shawn Longley, was found dead at a park in the 2500 block of Bacon Street in Ocean Beach, about three miles from the scene of the second assault, according to police. The cause of his death has not been released.

and then

#4 Then, at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, an SDPD officer found the fourth man suffering "significant injuries" to his upper torso at State and West E Streets, near condos and the federal courthouse.

Thanks for the map, used to live in San Diego. Mission Bay, Old Town, Hillcrest are better descriptions for me than Midway, East Village, etc...

Police: Same man is suspect in 4 attacks on homeless
Two people have died and a third is not expected to survive
July 6, 2016
http://www.cw6sandiego.com/police-same-man-is-suspect-in-4-attacks-on-homeless/

"Police won’t say at this point what exactly makes them think the same person is responsible for all the attacks. But Capt. Nisleit did say there are a number of reasons, and like Chief Zimmerman, said the investigation is now priority one for the department."

Count your blessings if you have a safe bed in a safe home tonight.........:offtobed:
