We are heartbroken and shocked to learn that our former head coach, John Altobelli along with his wife Keri and daughter Alyssa perished this morning in the helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant and his daughter. John was our head coach in 2012-14, and his son JJ played for us too. JJ and his other daughter Alexis survive them. Our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Oh how awful. Two are left as orphans now. These lives have just as much value as the Bryants. Such heartbreak!

Wow! Yeah I saw something that he died but I didn’t know about his wife and daughter . Still 3 more to be identified. Can’t believe it.

Can't discuss it, but search twitter for Audio of Kobe S-76 helicopter N72EX and you will find a link where you can hear their initial call to Burbank Tower

Geez, this is tough. My son who first told me about Kobe...
He has a mountain of sports trading cards he and I collected together as our bonding hobby as he was growing up. He just came back by, talked to his dad for a minute and told me bye. I asked him “Is everything ok?” “Yeah, I guess” he said. Then he just broke down in tears and hugged me. He’s 40 years old and he looked like my little boy again. Kobe will always be a classic. ❤️

Our son when in the USMC flew a Sikorsky CH 53 helicopter. Crew capacity is 51 plus pilot, co pilot, and Marine onboard aerial observer. Sikorsky builds some of the largest helicopters in the world. The CH53 has three jet engines, and 99 feet long, and two stories high.

Sikorsky is the foremost builder of helicopters known for their safety record, and power.

Imo, this accident is going to be due to pilot error. :(

So sad, and tragic for all families involved.

This would be sad even if it was just Kobe, GG and the pilot (or anyone else, to be honest). But it seems like that helicopter had three families inside. Going to a kids game. Come on, this is not fair. Those poor kids that were on their team, my God, I can't imagine breaking those news to a group of kids. So sad.
I just remembered when Travis Barker's, the Blink-182 drummer, private jet crashed in 2008. I still don't know how he was able to get out alive. It was so bad. Poor guy couldn't ever fly again and for someone who is in a band that still tours all over the World it's not easy to manage that, he goes by boat to Europe. Life is crazy, we never know.

I haven't listened to it, but just wanted to remind folks out there that major tragedies involving famous people have a way of bringing out the pranksters and hoaxers.

In some cases, they'll search YouTube for existing, unrelated crash and even movie dialogue then claim it is "legit." IMO

They receive thousands of "clicks" and shares before people realize it is "fake."

That is just devastating. The other children are fairly young. To lose both parents and a sibling in an instant is just heartbreaking.

Yes, I imagine the three yet to be identified are members of another family. I’m guessing parents and a daughter.

I bet the only reason Kobe’s wife Vanessa wasn’t on board was because of their newborn infant.

From your link, it definitely appears that it was in fact a mechanical issue:

Eyewitness Jerry Kocharian, 62, said he was standing outside the Church in the Canyon drinking coffee when he heard a helicopter that was flying unusually low and seeming to struggle.

It wasn’t sounding right,” he said, “and it was real low. I saw it falling and spluttering. But it was hard to make out as it was so foggy.”

The craft vanished into the sheet of fog, and then Kocharian heard the boom and saw a fireball.

“No one could survive that,” he said.

You’re probably right. Another daughter is only 3 as well. Baby is 7 months old.

I still think they will say the accident was due to pilot error.

Imo due to the fog the pilot was flying too close to the ground because of poor visibility, and lost lift power due to not having enough air space between the helicopter, and the ground.

That will cause the helicopter to drop. There have been other cases that ended in a hard landing due to the same thing.

Imo, since he was flying way too low to maintain airlift this is what caused him to crash.

Jmho tho and nothing more.
