The hearing, now scheduled for July 20, will be the first time details about the investigation into Smart’s disappearance will be discussed in court testimony. Van Rooyen instructed the DA’s Office to file a brief in support of its motion for an amended complaint by the end of the week and scheduled a hearing July 14 to discuss the proposed filing.
But those dates could still change. Another pre-preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 12 to provide updates on progress. That July 12 hearing will be live streamed via the court’s website at 1:30 p.m.

Paul Flores and his father, Ruben, are now set to appear for the in-person hearing in San Luis Obispo County Superior Court starting July 20.

The prosecution is expected to file the amended complaint by close of business Friday and the defense will have until the following Monday to file any opposition.

The preliminary hearing will also take place in the courtroom and not via Zoom. Van Rooyen has ruled that while the hearing can be filmed, audio cannot be recorded.

Plead not guilty. No bond.
*Ruben Ricardo Flores (55 @ time of crime/80) arrested & charged (4/13/21) & arraigned (4/15/21) with accessory to murder after the fact. Plead not guilty. $250K bond. Bond was lower to $50K. Has posted bond (4/22/21), out of jail.

6/29/21 Update: During a virtual hearing Defense attorney Robert Sanger motioned to the court to push back the scheduled start of the preliminary hearing set for 7/6/21. Sanger is still waiting to receive discovery from the prosecution. Judge Jacquelyn Duffy granted the motion. Judge Duffy set a date for a pre-preliminary hearing for 7/6/21 @ 8:30am & Superior Court Judge van Rooyen may select a new date for the preliminary hearing at that time.

Judge rejects order that would silence Smart family attorney - Cal Coast Times

On Wednesday, Judge Ginger Garrett denied Flores’s request for a protective order against Murphy, stating there is no grounds for it because the stay has not been lifted.

A preliminary hearing in the criminal case is scheduled to begin on July 20. The preliminary hearing is expected to last 12 days.

Recently listened to the YOB Episodes 09 & 10 for the first time. Excellent, and extremely eye-opening. There were some elements that were gone over in more detail (that I think I've heard about before), but most of what was discussed here were new revelations. Amazing. 7/7/21 Update: At a criminal proceeding in April, Judge Craig Van Rooyen issued an order barring the defendants; attorneys in the case or their agents; law enforcement involved in the case; witnesses; and court staff from publicly discussing the case. In civil court, Paul Flores’s attorney sought the same protective order be applied to Arroyo Grande lawyer Jim Murphy, who represents the Smart family and has long been outspoken about Kristin Smart’s disappearance. The Smart family’s civil case against Paul Flores has been suspended since 2003, when a judge ordered a stay. SLO County Superior Court Judge Ginger Garrett DENIED a gag order filed by Paul Flores’s civil attorneys against James Murphy (civil attorney for Kristin Smart’s family). A protective order is in effect for the criminal case which bars SLO Sheriff from talking publicly about the case. Next pre preliminary hearing for both on 7/12/21. Motions hearing on 7/14/21.
