[…]

According to the Redding Police Department, Cardenas was involved in a traffic collision on Oak Run Road on May 29.

[…]

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office began an investigation on May 31, 2025, confirming that Cardenas had been home after the collision but disappeared shortly after.

At first I thought he might be fleeing ramifications of the accident (i.e. prior arrest or he had been drinking when the accident occurred ) but HE was the one that reported the accident to the Highway Patrol. It appears he did so, went home, then took a cab and some hiking/bakpacking equpment, making statements to the effect he had a planned hike (there was a record of a cab ride, confirmed by the driver, from the Weslls Fargo on Cypress Ave. to Mt. Shast'a Avalanche Gulch trailhead.)

Siskiyou County Sheriffs are now assisting.

My thoughts exactly? Did he actually make contact with LE at the scene? Mental health situation perhaps?

ETA - he left the accident scene before officer arrived. So what happened to his car? Towed? Something is def wrong with him.

Was he driving a vehicle that was involved? A passenger in a vehicle that was involved? Did he sustain a head injury and become lost or incapacitated while on the hike? Why not postpone the hike after the incident? I have so many questions!

Another question - the cab driver that dropped him off at the trailhead with his hiking equipment said he picked him up from a Wells Fargo bank? why would he need to go to the bank before a trip into the wilderness? Moving funds? Withdrawing funds?

Good questions.
Did he voluntarily disappear?

Needed cab money for the ride to the trailhead, wanted cash to keep on hand? How did he pay for the cab ride?

'Police confirm Lesner reported the accident but left the scene before they arrived. The woman who gave him a ride said he seemed coherent and had no injuries, but when Jimenez went home to check on him just after 3:30 p.m., he was gone.'

As far as more details on the accident;

'the last family and friends heard Velasquez had been in a rollover accident after avoiding a deer along Oak Run Road around 10:30 a.m., May 29.'

How scary - a rollover crash sounds serious. I wonder if he has a serious head injury. I am reminded of the case of Peter Porco where he was struck in the face with an axe and sustained severe brain injuries, but somehow still got up and completed his morning routine on autopilot, making coffee etc before he died. MOO.

After he returned home, detectives learned Lesner took the cab to Mt. Shasta from Cypress Avenue. The driver picked him up near Wells Fargo Bank at 2:22 p.m.

The cell phone he carried with him has been out of service since that afternoon.

Did he switch off the phone when being dropped off or later?

From his apartment on Trudy Trail Redding to the Bank on Cypress Ave Redding:

The bank is not nearby, so he must have gone there on purpose. JMO

Maybe there’s something we don’t know about the rollover accident? Seems like he wanted to disappear after that happened? Going to the bank seems intentional. He wouldn’t need money if going hiking in the wilderness?

A taxi (I didn't even realize Redding had taxis, and I live in the general region) from Redding to a Mt. Shasta trailhead is bizarre to me. It's well over an hour's ride.

Perhaps that's why he needed cash from the bank, to pay the taxi fare which must have been quite high.

What if he really did set off on this supposed hike and something happened to him on the trail? Have the trails connected with the trailhead where he was dropped off been searched?
