Hrones said his client maintains that "Rockefeller is his real name." “He’s used aliases," Hrones said, "but there’s nothing wrong with using aliases as long as you don’t use them to defraud.”

Oh, such selective memory! Pfft! Well Hrones, this is a big flipflop from your client not remembering ANYTHING of note before x date!! Sure, since you've "met" him socially it's okay that he uses aliases to dupe people. Uh huh. I soooo believe you (Said with extreme sarcasm!)

What is he saying? please

  • #503
I was reading that link and I'm being sarcastic about what Hrones said when he was first retained by Gerhardstrieter and what he's saying now.

This crook is maintaining he's really Rockefeller despite everything. As the cartoon characters say on Bugs Bunny "what a maroon!"

did you have a chance to listen to the tape?

  • #505
Knoxx, I listened to it at the Boston Globe site.

  • #506
The tape was kinda short! Hrones didn't sound as cocky as he did previously.

  • #507
ok thanks I will try that one.... :)

You're welcome Knoxx!

Just found out a little more, from someone who was close to Linda.

It was John's mother (Didi/ Ruth) who lived in the house, but was reclusive. She continued to live in the house after they disappeared. Then she had to sell the house, and that's when she moved to a trailer. So the house wasn't standing empty.

(Maybe that was clear to everyone but me...?) Haven't seen the old UM show on the whole thing.

Linda told her friend that they were going to New York for a job interview... she never mentioned France at all. That info came from Didi. Linda's friend also received a postcard, and it is postmarked exactly the same as the postcard to Lydia. (April 29th, 1985) She has now compared the writing to some writing that she knows is Linda's, and it does NOT match. It was also a very cryptic postcard, and didn't mention anything about an upcoming date that they had been planning for months.

So, at least two of the postcards were sent on the same day, and it was after Chichester disappeared from the house. Her friend does not think that Linda wrote them.

He... talked... the DMV... into giving him a license.... This guy is unbelievable.

Joanie, wouldn't the passport you're talking about his renewing be a German passport though?

Yes, it would be a German passport. It was probably still valid, or as easy to renew as a US passport.

And if he did also have a passport in the name of Michael Brown, who knows what else he had? He would have built up a pile of alternate identities, passports, ID cards of some sort, maybe false social security cards, it's hard to say. He didn't work very often, but he was hired at a few jobs, so he had to have some sort of soc. sec. to show them!! He had to have some sort of drivers license, since he did drive for years. His fingerprint that they traced is one that he gave when he tried to sell the truck, since he didn't have the pink slip. He was verifying that he was the owner... but they guy who was buying the truck backed out because he was suspicious, and went to the police, but Chichester was gone by the time the police looked for him...

Thanks Capoly! So if he was 17 and was part of an exchange program there should be paperwork stashed somewhere. I was wondering whether he had truly been part of an exchange program or whether he had just said he was.

I question that too. People in Conn. indicate that he met Americans in Germany and they exchanged addresses then he just showed up. They couldn't keep him, so they submitted an ad in a newspaper to find something else. People in Germany have seemed to indicate that he left rather suddenly.

In an exchange program, it does take time. I believe there is quite a bit of paperwork, they find the homes for the student, most will do at least some background check on where the student is going. And if the home slated for the student to go is unable to keep the student, I would think they would find him a new home or send him back. And since they are sponsoring the student, I think they are supposed to keep track of him.

So I believe that at 16 or 17, he himself arranged his move to the US. Maybe he said it was an exchange program, but somehow I am not convinced....I think this may have been his first con.

The German education system is different than ours. And I think I read that he had completed the basic educational system and his grades weren't good enough for him to be sent to college. He might have been eligible for what sounded like a trade school. But it is also theorised that he may have wanted to leave Germany to evade the mandatory military service.

It would be interesting to figure out how old he actually was when he came to the US. Hasn't his birthdate been publicized?

I've tried to put together the most accurate timeline I can. Still needs work but here is a start. Feel free to add to this but keep in mind there are errors in some early articles. I won't be back online until late today so I won't be able to respond to any questions on this until then.

  • 1961: Christian Gerhartstreiter is born in Germany.
  • 1978: Christian Gerhartstreiter Graduates from a German Business School (17)
  • 1979-81: in Berlin, CT as Christian Gerhart Reiter a Bavarian German exchange student. (This is the most recent name from the family/transcript but earlier there were other versions). Records show a Social Security number associated with the name Christian Gerhart Streiter — not Reiter — was issued in Connecticut about the same time. (18-19)
  • 1979: Graduates high school in Berlin CT (18)
  • 1981: Moves to Wisconsin, marries a US Citizen Amy Jersild, 22 and obtains green card (20)

  • 1988: Tries to sell a truck belonging to John Sohus in Greenwich Conn as a Christopher Crowe (probably what precipitated the police visit to Kidder Peabody)
  • 1991 (in some places 1993): Rented apartment on NY upper east side as Clark Rockefeller
  • 1993: Meets Sandra Boss
  • 1994: Bones found in John Sohus yard. ‘Chichester’ wanted for questioning but cannot be found.
  • 1993-2008: In Boston MA, Cornish NH, Nantucket MA. "Clark Rockefeller" "Clark Mill Rockefeller" "Clark M. Rockefeller III" "James Frederick" "Chip MacLaughlin" "Michael Brown." All mentioned as aliases.

  • Late 2007:approached Baltimore’s Obsidian Realty in late 2007 using the alias Chip MacLaughlin. He asked real estate agents to help him find a two-or three-bedroom home for him and his daughter while he relocated from Chile
  • July 2008:finalized purchase of Baltimore home in mid-July.
[/LIST]

Timeline that Tuppence put together. Items in red I have added, his age during the events.

So at the age of 18 and 20, he was already finding and exploiting the weaknesses in the US immigration system.

My hubby's 2 older kids live in Germany. In their school system, you are assigned to a track based on your grades when you are around 10. There are three tracks. The lowest graduates at 15, the middle at 16, and the highest at 17 or 18 (not sure if it's one or two years more school). His daughter was in the middle track and finished at 16. She then had a year off before her job training program so she came here and lived with us for a year and went to high school here. She just left last month to go back.

Gerhartsreiter's birthday was published as being in February 1961, which would have made him 17 in 1978 and 18 when his high school class in the U.S. graduated in 1979, which is normal age for a graduating senior here.

I believe he made his own way to America also. There is something about the story of him abruptly showing up on the doorstep of some people that exchanged addresses with him without any advance notice that just seems very true to his nature to me.

Now he's going to blame John's mother Didi. Of course, she's deceased and can't refute his claims.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/08/12/old_lives_coming_back_to_rockefeller/

Hrones offered Rockefeller's explanation of why Rockefeller turned up with John Sohus's white pickup truck in Greenwich, Conn., in 1988, three years after Sohus went missing. Hrones said that Rockefeller had bought the truck from John's mother and that she failed to send him the truck's registration after he paid for it.

I'm with ya'll, I think his "exchange student" may have been his first con here in the U.S.
