Chance disappeared on January 3, 1948. That day she left her only child with a babysitter in Santa Cruz, California and said she'd return in a couple of hours, but she never came back to get her. She lived on Riverside Avenue in Santa Clara, California at the time.

Chance applied for death benefits for her husband from the Veteran's Administration on March 28, 1948; he'd been in the Navy and had died in an accident in November 1947. Her application was approved in August of that year, but by then she had moved without leaving a forwarding address. She never collected any benefits and there's been no indication of her whereabouts since 1948.

Agreed. It should have been established where she was going and why she needed a babysitter that day.

The babysitter was in Santa Cruz- 30 miles away by car from Santa Clara where Lorraine lived.
It would have been over an hour to travel one way by bus. Did she have a car? Was it found?

Did this person babysit often? Would they be familiar with Lorraine's routine?
Lorraine most likely took her child on local errands like the grocery store. So where was she going if she didn't want to bring the child that time and had to drive 30 miles away for a babysitter? Was she meeting someone?

The babysitter really is the only angle to begin to find the answers.

From Ancestry I could find Lorraine had married Calvin H Chance. He was buried 17 November 1947 aged 22. One child Donna Lee Chance.

Chance, circa 1948

• Distinguishing CharacteristicsCaucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Chance's maiden name is Barrie and some accounts refer to her as Lorraine Barrie-Chance. Her nickname is Lee. She has protruding teeth and wears a size 3.5 shoe.

I think the protruding teeth and such very small feet would be very good identifying features.
