This is all the NamUs page tells us. There is a listing for March 21, 1980 on the L.A. County Coroner but it doesn't line up with what we know about him.
I found an article which sort of lines up with him,

About a young man being hit by a train on that day, which would explain the remains being missing/parts destroyed. However, this happened in Mecca which is not in L.A. county.
