CA CA - Margaret “Elaine” McKinley, 79, separated while hiking with family, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, Lost Trail, San Mateo County, 1 May 2025

Margaret still hasn’t been found?
No, sadly. The search has been scaled back to a limited contious search phase. This article has a good map of the areas searched. Search for missing hiker continues on limited basis. This means the search has shifted from a high-intensity, multiple agency, resource-heavy search to a more sustained, localized, and community-based participation (focus) such as reviewing security footage from home cameras, providing information about potential sightings, and sharing photos or videos. This search phase is maintained until the person is found.

The preserve she was in was only about 1400 acres but if you look at a map, there are approx. 10 other preserved areas all around it- a huge area if you get off your trail...

Thank you, I'm sorry to hear her family is still waiting for her to be found :(

"McKinley, 79, was hiking at the preserve in Portola Valley on May 1 with her partner, Kit Durgin, and a friend when she went missing. Friends remain hopeful missing Redwood City hiker will soon be found"

That's very interesting, do you know if the third person walking with them has said anything about what happened?

It’s not surprising that they failed to find her, even if the area’s been thoroughly searched- any S&R worker will tell you how difficult it is to find something as small as a body in the woods. Probably even more so if the person had dementia and wouldn’t have been behaving predictably. There have been countless cases where someone is found by chance after the search concludes, just because of that difficulty. IMO foul play is incredibly unlikely
