Mark Burleigh was released from the Humboldt County Correctional Facility in mid-October 2017. From this point Mark’s movements become murky. On October 15, Mark’s mother, Jennifer, spoke with him on the phone where she said he told her, “he loved me and he was looking forward to Thanksgiving”.

The last time Jennifer saw Mark in person was in September 2017. He was released from the Mendocino County Jail and she picked him up in Willits to take him north. Before departing Willits, they stopped at a gas station that had agreed to give Mark a unique Red Bull cooler. The pair proceeded to Alderpoint where Jennifer dropped him off.

Mark Burleigh was known by “Burley” to most of his friends. He was 6 feet tall, weighed 120 lbs, had a mole on his left cheek, and a 6-8 inch scar on his upper right arm. He was known to frequent Southern Humboldt but had connections as far south as San Francisco and as far north as Crescent City.

Once again, someone has vanished in the Emerald Triangle, only to be reported missing years later. Unusually, Mark was Humboldt raised, unlike most of the phantoms who disappear in the Triangle.

Mark is reported to have blond hair and blue eyes, to be from 5' 8" to 6' tall, and to weigh from 120 - 180 pounds. It is my guess that the extreme weight variations may be accounted for by his drug habits, as he has had his go-rounds with meth.

Details of Disappearance​

Burleigh was last seen in Humboldt County, California on October 18, 2017. At the time of his disappearance, he was homeless and living on the street in the Garberville area. He also frequents the California cities of Eureka, Ukiah and San Francisco. He has never been heard from again.

Burleigh's family had last heard from him in September 2017. He was reported missing on February 13, 2018. His case remains unsolved. Few details are available.

In early July, a bone was found in the Eel River near Redway, deputies said in a news release.

Initially, after the county coroner’s office reviewed photos, the bone was “determined unlikely to be human,” according to deputies.

However, after the bone was collected for additional analysis, the coroner’s office had anthropologists examine the bone, and they determined the bone may be human.

The bone was sent to the Department of Justice, which later determined it belonged to Burleigh, according to deputies.
