Maya Millete family frustrated over lack of answers in Chula Vista mom's disappearance

Maricris told FOX 5 that Maya made an appointment with a lawyer to begin the divorce process the same day she went missing, and that Maya asked her for $10,000 that same week.

“The date, the scheduled date to meet with the divorce lawyer, that was done Thursday afternoon,” Maricris said. “According to the divorce lawyer, she wanted to have the birthday celebration first, her daughter’s birthday celebration was on Sunday, so she wanted to wait.”

Oh boy... $10,000? And an appointment with a divorce lawyer?

It kind of looks like she was trying to GO. My guess is that the plan was to make a run for it with the kids. Just speculating though.

I don't think it was necessarily to make a run for it, but I do think it was likely to set up an account for herself separate from the marital accounts in order to establish some independence to move forward with divorce proceedings. It definitely adds to the evidence that she was actively planning to separate, not just having casual thoughts about it. Most everyone on WS knows that this is one of the most dangerous times for women :(

Very damning. Depending on what video and/or forensics evidence they have, the DA may decide to proceed without earthly remains being discovered.

I remain extremely concerned for the safety of the children.

I agree. Very dangerous. I wonder if she was already looking at homes to rent/buy, looking at other school districts, etc. I think she was getting ready to cut ties with the husband.

Wow -- family contacted outside cold-case personnel only two days after MM reported missing! I hope this didn't interfere with probable cause and search warrant by LE. Might explain why Larry stopped cooperating with LE.

Maricris and Richard said they reached out to semi-retired capital defense attorney and criminal defense investigator Billy Little with the Cold Case Foundation two days after Maya’s disappearance. The Cold Case Foundation is made up of experts who volunteer their time to help law enforcement agencies solve cases, including missing persons and homicides.

Maya was seen on camera that Thursday going out looking in her jeep and maybe making a phone call out there. I had guessed it might've been to an divorce attorney to make that appt. Now, it seems likely.

The worst thing she could've done was to go back inside and during an argument spit out to LM her plans to see a divorce attorney.

Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money to borrow from a family member. You wouldn't need that much as a retainer to start divorce proceedings, or to rent a new place while the divorce went through.

The fact is she was going to go the legal route in the divorce courts, and not run off.

Her trying to borrow that much money has me stumped. What reason did she give Maricris or whoever she asked for the money? Did they have to refuse lending her the money? That's a lot of money to ask to borrow, IMO.

10k makes sense. A retainer at the low end is $5k. Rentals require first and last month. So $10k sounds right.

Yes, you're probably right. Divorce is expensive and not much stays the same. It was going to be a big change of their life style as a couple having to have two separate households. That jeep might have had to be sold. That's the least of it. Things can get ugly the minute divorce is mentioned. It seems that's what happened. All MOO though.

I agree that the amount seems reasonable - San Diego is an expensive city. It can be hard if everything is set up as direct deposit and is in joint accounts. I have heard stories of upset spouses locking funds or making it hard to access joint accounts. To me, it just speaks to how serious she was about moving forward with plans to separate.

If the couple can’t agree, it’s the lawyers that win. $$$.

Oh my, MM was really taking steps to finally step away from the marriage, it wasn’t just a possibility anymore. It became reality. That’s always the most dangerous time for the wifes and girlfriends.
I too think 10K seems right to pay a retainer, eventually pay deposit for a new place plus moving etc.

It’s all so sad.

FWIW it is common for Asian families to borrow and loan large amounts of money that way. And depending on the fight she was anticipating, 10k is not an unreasonable amount to put on retainer in CA anyways. we spent about 18k on my husbands attorney for custody only. RE and rents are also high in the area, if she was anticipating a rental for a 3 bedroom plus home items replacement that would eat up 10k quickly. ppl have done it for less out of necessity of course, but if her family had it and she knew they would help then she prob asked.

I think you can trust that when police do not request outside assistance it's because they are looking at a criminal investigation versus a missing person investigation -- but can't make this type of announcement publically. You can bet that they want a certain person to believe they are spending hours viewing neighborhood surveillance and not much else!

Similar to when an individual is obviously a person of interest and LE will not confirm that they are.

PI's can be very valuable for missing persons where no criminal element is suspected. However, despite what you see on TV, they cannot tap phones, obtain phone data, GPS evidence for court, tower dumps, etc. which require search warrants. They cannot make arrests or subpoena information -- all elements of an investigation that must be kept close to the vest of investigators responsible for turning over a solid package to the prosecutor's office. Also, in CA especially -- the DA's office has investigators that serve smaller towns and counties such as California City with missing West brothers.

Again -- we have no confirmation from LE and I'm sorry but I don't believe MM is not coming back to her family alive, and I think she's the victim of foul play -- homicidal violence. MOO

ETA: I don't believe LE would turn down credible info from PI just as they wouldn't turn down credible tips from the public. In this case, I believe they turned down the independent services of the PI.

Here's a resource link related to CA private investigators.

Yeah, keeping that money separate from LM.
If it’s a gift from her sister.. I think she can.
Possibly a “gift” post the separation date (being filed with the court)
Legally you have every right to withdraw money for your divorce lawyer from a joint account.
She probably did not as it would have tipped her hand.
Same with rental house deposit.

Gosh, she was so close❤️

Maya Millete case: Police say Chula Vista mom's disappearance 'is not a cold case' as search continues

As of Monday, Thunberg said the case is not criminal and that there are no suspects.

“We still have a missing persons case; we don’t actually have a crime which is thankful, right, that leaves hope that May is found and found safely,” Thunberg said, “At this point, I don’t have any information that tells us otherwise, but we’ll continue to pull, like I said, we’ll unravel everything that we can to try to find her.”

For me, this really shows how much LE doesn't let us know.
We were told over and over again that Maricris didn't know anything about the divorce before Maya disappeared, that only LM told them about marital problems.
Now we find out that she borrowed this money and I don't know, I guess she could have just said she needed it without explanation but this family seems very right knit and it's not just $100 for bills..
This, to me, seems like a tactic to keep her in the news for public.
I just wish she'd be found soon, I'm worried for her children.
Even though I don't know them and live on another continent, I've been following her disappearance since the beginning and I don't think it will be a happy ending.
