The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) confirmed Monday that skeletal remains were located in the Pinyon Pines area.

“Skeletal remains were located on Feb. 5, but at this time we have not had a positive identification on those remains,” wrote RCSD Correctional Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro of the department’s media information bureau. “The remains were located near the 70100 block of Highway 74 in Mountain Center [Pinyon Pines]. No further information is available at this time.

Five people remain missing
Eight people have gone missing in the area since March of last year and five remain missing.

On Sept. 10, an RCSD SUV was spotted hauling an off-road vehicle near Highway 243 and Saunders Meadow Road.

According to Hemet Sheriff Station Capt. Leonard Purvis, “They were conducting follow-up searches for Melissa Lane.”

While it was unclear exactly where on the mountain deputies were searching for Lane, Purvis also confirmed that the search didn’t provide any further information or evidence of where Lane may have gone missing.

Lane, 41, was last seen June 15, according to a poster that was displayed in the Mountain Center area. The Town Crier spoke to Kathy Lamont, Lane’s mother, right after she was reported missing.

“She was an avid hiker but didn’t have a destination,” Lamont said. “She was last seen in Pine Cove. I don’t know if she’s dead or alive.”

Melissa Lane — who helped search for Prifogle last spring because Prifogle was good friends with her cousin... [snip] ...the same cousin said that sometime between June 10 and 15, he drove Lane to Black Mountain Road, where she got out of his truck to go for a hike. She wasn’t carrying a cellphone or backpack.

Details of Disappearance
Lane was last seen when her cousin dropped her off along Highway 274, at the trailhead to Black Mountain Road in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County, California. California on June 15, 2020. She has never been heard from again. She was an avid hiker at the time of her disappearance and very familiar with the area, but she didn't have a cellular phone or backpack at the time of her disappearance, and it's unclear whether she intended to go hiking that day. She also liked to hitchhike up and down the mountain.

The police refused to accept a missing persons report for Lane until August 5, nearly two months after her disappearance. According to her mother, she had struggled with drug addiction in the past but was trying to turn her life around. Lane left behind two children. Her case remains unsolved and the circumstances of her disappearance are unclear.

Two of the six hikers missing in Idyllwild over the last five months have been found
41-year-old Melissa Lane was reported missing on June 15th around 9:20 a.m. heading to Idyllwild from Pine Cove. Her phone and her belongings were left behind at her boyfriend's house, according to her sister on a Facebook post. Her mother, tho nervous, is hopeful Lane will be found. She says, “I am very concerned and I miss you Melissa. I love you.”

Kathy Lamont last spoke with her daughter, Melissa Lane, 41, on June 8. She has been missing since about June 15 and is believed to have gone hiking – something she loved to do alone.

Lamont described her daughter, who lived in Pine Cove, as a loner who loved to hike.

As more people have learned of her daughter’s disappearance, Lamont said, she has been receiving lots of calls, but nothing that leads to Lane’s whereabouts.

“I’ve been praying day and night for her,” Lamont said, adding she has had three dreams recently her daughter is in trouble and screaming out for her.

She described her daughter as 5-foot-2 or 5-foot-3, petite with brownish/reddish hair.

“She looks like a petite little Irish girl,” Lamont said.

Lane doesn’t like carrying cell phones, so didn’t have one with her and usually doesn’t have a backpack when she hikes, her mother said.

“I have cried a river,” Lamont said and hopes if there is a connection between her daughter’s disappearance and the disappearance of the others still missing, investigators will find out soon before harm comes to anyone else.

Detectives investigate 6 missing person cases in and around Idyllwild
The mother of Melissa Lane, 41, reported her daughter missing on July 4 north of Pine Cove.

“She hasn't called anybody she knows. She just disappeared,” said her mother, who asked only to be identified by her first name, Kathy.

The mother said Lane exited a relative’s vehicle near the trailhead to Black Mountain Truck Trail, eight miles north of Idyllwild and she was never seen again.

“She hiked all over. She wasn't afraid of anything. She had no fear,” said the mother.

Kathy said she spent weeks looking for Lane.

“I think it’s a predator. They could be stealing people for the sex-slave trade or it could be a serial killer,” said Kathy.
