MONTARA — A car spotted careening off a cliff on the San Mateo County coast late Thursday night might be the vehicle that belongs to a missing San Jose man, authorities said.
Deputies were dispatched to Highway 1 near the La Costanera restaurant about 11:45 p.m. for a report of a reckless driver, according to Detective Rosemerry Blankswade of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Blankswade said a red sedan was seen heading northbound, when its driver swerved toward a vehicle traveling southbound. The witness in that vehicle then saw the sedan drive over a cliff somewhere between the restaurant and the Tom Lantos Tunnel.
Around the same time, San Jose police notified the sheriff’s office they were looking for a man who was last seen driving a red 2010 Toyota Camry and was possibly in Montara, based on cellphone data and information provided by family, according to Blankswade.
San Jose police Officer Gina Tepoorten said the man, 52-year-old Michael Konevecki, left his home about 10:45 p.m. Thursday and “has not been seen or heard from since.”
Konevecki was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and 170 pounds, with brown hair and gray eyes.
Blankswade said deputies scoured the coastline and found signs of a recent collision north of Montara State Beach, including fresh scrapes in a dirt berm overlooking a cliff and an undercarriage panel from a sedan. The U.S. Coast Guard joined the effort but no vehicles were found.
A formal search followed Friday morning. Authorities located numerous parts from a 2009-10 Toyota Camry in the water, but no car or driver, according to Blankswade.
“We have not been able to confirm if this collision is in fact the missing man from San Jose,” Blankswade said in a news release.
