CA CA - Mitrice Richardson, 24, Malibu, 17 Sep 2009

Okay that's sarcasm in case y'all didn't follow it. I'm sorry. I'm just plain mad. I was mad before over this case, and brokenhearted and flabbergasted... but arghhhhhhhhh. I wish she had been found on skid row or something. What a wonderful ending that would have been.

God bless Mitrice and God bless her mom and dad.

I'm so sorry it has ended this way. Poor little thing was there the whole time.

Prayers to her family and friends. Hoping for answers as to what happened and changes to an obviously flawed "system."

RIP beautiful Mitrice.

I cannot possibly imagine why this woman would have been allowed to be released in an area with no car, no identification, no money, and no cell phone when there was NO possible way she could have caught even public transportation. God bless her soul and give peace to her family. The LEO's on duty that night have a whole lot of explaining to do. Unfortunately, I think there is nothing they could say that would make their decision rational or responsible. I hope this is a lesson learned for all authorities and hopefully an opportunity for them to educate their employees on the effects and limitations of acute mental illness.

I totally agree.

When Malibu PD released Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen from custody, THEY DROVE THEM HOME!

Are you kidding me? :furious::furious::furious: The guys with all the money that could call a cab? :furious::furious::furious: Why? Because they are on TV sometimes?:furious::furious::furious::furious:

What the ?*@*!

I hope this information can be verified and put in the lawsuit that Matrice's parents are filing.

I think Malibu PD/Sheriff has a lot to answer for in this case.

Hi UCLA,
The story I linked (above from laweeekly) says "but a map indicates the area is within about five miles of the Lost Hills outpost."

Sorry, the "typed by me" meant that I had to physically type it because for some reason that night it wouldn't let me copy it from that page.

Thanks. I Googled for more stories and the distances and locations are very inconsistent. News says she was so far inland (away from road, trails, cliffs etc.) that no way someone could be in there under normal circumstances.

Other articles say near an old marijuana farm, which would not be near the road and they say in a remote area of "Malibu Canyon".

Location makes all the difference so I wish they would elaborate a bit. I hope an autopsy can shed some light on what happened for the sake of the family.

This is on NG right now. They played a tape of her mom's phone call to LE. They told her they were transporting her at that time to the jail and they were going to hold her.

When they were going to release her, they told her she could stay inside until someone could pick her up. She said she'd make it on her own.

A witness saw Matrice wandering around after she'd left the police station. He said she was wandering around aimlessly. I forgot where this was from the first time this was reported. I don't know how far it was from the area where she was eventually found.

I believe she did have a psychotic break of some sort. She was at the right age that this could happen. We had another case where the wife took off and drove around aimlessly for several hours. Her car was eventually found on an open road, but she was nowhere to be found. They had to wait until spring before they found her. She just wandered away from her car, left it running and the door open, and I guess succomed to the elements.

This is so sad. I hope they can find out what happened. It just seems that area is so remote. Not saying she couldn't have gotten there on her own, I just don't know for sure.

They don't know the cause of death. But they said from all outward appearances, there's no evidence that she was murdered. ie, no bullet holes, no broken bones, no sign of trauma, oh, no knife wounds.

Just a thought, and this is MOO. Isn't it possible that a cop did this? It wouldn't be the first time, that's for sure. I'm not accusing anyone, but what if? Mitrice is beautiful, it's around shift change, and found not far away. Wow, my imagination may be getting the best of me.

My thoughts and prayers to her family.

RIP Mitrice

To clear the air, I think the Sheriff Department should release information on if any officers were sent down Malibu Canyon Rd for any reason after Mitrice was released, and why. They were the last people to see her alive (aside from the Monte Nido resident).

Even though they patrol the streets etc. I don't think they would know the wilderness area that well in terms of where to hide a body. A park ranger maybe, but not a police officer.

I wonder when it was that they'd raided that pot field? They said she was located by two rangers who were checking out a pot field that had previously been located and I believe, removed.

Oh gosh! They just had Mark Klass on. He's such a wonderful person. He said a few kind words to Matrice's dad.

NG is wrong, that Matrice wouldn't have walked to that area on her own. That's what many people said about another woman's case, but that is just what happened.

Matrice's dad is very gracious, under the circumstances. He said he works in an emergency room setting and has to deal with LE often. He's sure except perhaps 10% on what happened that night. He just wants a few more questions answered.

Oh, fwiw, it was 6:30a.m. when the witness saw her wandering around in the neighborhood, after she'd left the police station. I don't know what time they released her. Does anyone know?

A TH said on NG that LE didn't have probable cause to hold her. They had to release her. It's a shame the officer who talked to Matrice's mom before she arrived at the station, wasn't the one releasing her. I would HOPE he would have called Matrice's mom, seeing how she had already voiced her concern of her being released without a car and so far from home. She said if they released her, she'd come and get her. IF they were going to arraign her the next day, she'd wait.

This is such a horrible tragedy. Such a beautiful girl. Such a beautiful mother who did every right that night that she could do from 80 miles away. I hope they sue the socks of the LA Police Dept. and I hope the jury sends a very strong message that they have to change their policies

Let's not look for a woman who has been missing for almost a year lets look at pot fields that have already been removed. If no one did this to her, how long would it take her to succomb to the elements? I will tell you in Ventura County that is right next to Malibu they wouldn't release people till after 2 am. They would give you your money in a check that you could do nothing with at that time and there is nowhere to go. A woman got raped waiting for a ride and they changed the times they let people out. But that was all they did. Pretty sick.

They did tell her she could stay inside but she didn't. I think if they held her after the fact that would have been trouble too. By law they probably had to let her go after so many hours as ridiculous as it was that they put her in jail. Another thing, What would have happened to her if they didn't arrest her? Who know's what would have happened if she was acting weird. It's really really sad. This didn't have to happen.

He called 911 right? Did they come out and couldn't find her? Anyone know what happened with that call?

So heartbreaking, yet one has disturbing feelings at what happened or didn't happen in this case. After watching HLN and the mother break down on JVM, I said what a tragedy, but it wasn't, this one slipped through many eyes of people who should have been concerned. #1...If I was aware that my child (who had never been in trouble before?) was being taken to police station, I'd be down there in a NY minute. Don't know what the LE report said, but am very interested...said it was 50+ pages long. Something went wrong, but the mother should have gone down there, or at the very least, found out if the daughter WOULD be detained until morning or released. LE's not going to take the time to call her back. JMO, but I'd dang sure have been down there.

Yeah, but why did they let her go without her car or any of her belongings? There's no reason to impound someone's vehicle when the only infraction is not paying a restaurant bill. They claim she didn't appear to be impaired and she wasn't arrested on a traffic violation. So WHY didn't they give her back her car? And WHY would they keep her purse and cell phone?

There just will never be a reasonable explanation. Ever.

I totally agree and dont think the LE should be blamed.....they are damned if they do and damned if they dont....

Just what you need more huge suing of government departments!!!!

Is there any time that people are responsible for their actions.....

go on slam me now.....it is very tragic I agree....but if she had of been kept in and maybe committed suicide you would have blamed the police for that as well?????

as a daughter of a policeman in oz (who would have seen a tenth of what one of your city cops would deal with) I can tell you it is a hhhaaaarrrrrrddddd job and what they take on, the majority of us would not deal with......

I take my hat of to the police, the paramedics, the emergency ward nurses who make life and death decisions every day.......I am sure they did not think this girl would die!

Condolences to her family. I'm very sorry to hear this =( It INFURIATES me that they released her without taking her to a hospital to be checked out...they should have treated this as a mental health issue from the BEGINNING. Sorry, just venting.

She shouldn't have been taken to booking until she had been evaluated...she clearly was having a problem. Did they release her just because she passed a sobriety test? I deeply believe the police were grossly negligent and SHOULD be sued so that new guidelines will be passed and this never happens again.

Lawsuits are sometimes the only way to get the offending parties to change their guidelines/rules. When they're hit where it hurts ($), companies/organizations will usually make drastic changes to make sure they're never sued again...and in this case, it will also protect others and probably save lives. So sorry Mitrice is gone...I really hope that it yields big changes in the way the public is treated, though....especially our most vulnerable populations. I think she would have wanted that, from what I've read about her as I've followed this case over the year.

ETA: I hope her parents win and use some of that money to help mentally ill people, or something like that. Perhaps an organization that trains officers what to look for...although I think any reasonable person would have been tipped off that something was wrong with Mitrice if the restaurant reported she was speaking in a "different language". Hello!? Earth to the police officers?!?!?! Sorry. Just...can't believe that every person that came into contact with her didn't raise heck that she was ill and needed medical attention. How do they sleep at night? Shame on them! SHAME!
A simple 5150 hold what have put MR under observation for 48 hours. Honestly, I have a few things I'd like to say but may offend LE (not you) and the way this was handled so poorly and with lack of regard, so I will keep them to myself ;)

I completely and utterly have sympathy to the family of MR. This shouldn't have happened.
