Nick Reiner's next court appearance set for April

Anna Kaufman and Bryan Alexander

Reiner's next court appearance was set for April 29, during Monday's hearing. The entire proceeding was very short, with Reiner only uttering one word, "yes," when the judge asked if he understood.

Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to the slayings of his father and mother, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, setting up a case that could test his potential defense surrounding his mental fitness to stand trial.

The plea, entered in a downtown Los Angeles courthouse in front of a throng of media, begins what could be a lengthy legal process, a period during which Reiner’s lawyers are expected to question his mental state leading up to and during the killings. It could be over a year before he faces a trial, if there is one.

I’m glad NR is starting with a regular “not guilty” plea, perhaps his attorney advised him he did not meet the threshold for NGRI. I suppose NGRI can be brought up later, but for now, regular criminal track.
He could go through the criminal case, guilty, IMO, likely as we already know he did it.
Then, during sentencing, his attorney could help NR to mitigate his sentence by weighing in heavily with Mental Health experts, NR’s own Doctors. Try to get sympathy of jury, to get a step down at sentencing. Just wondering if this may be his attorneys thinking.
What I want for him is life in prison, he killed two beloved people, too dangerous to ever get out.

LOS ANGELES — The son of director Rob Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents in their Los Angeles home last year, pleaded not guilty to two murder counts at an arraignment Monday.

Nick Reiner, 32, was slumped over in a tan jumpsuit with his hair closely shaved during the hearing at a Los Angeles County Superior Court. He sat in a glass box and only spoke to the court to agree to waive his rights to a speedy trial.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Dec. 14 stabbing deaths of Rob Reiner, a beloved director, and his wife, a photographer and movie producer, Michele Singer Reiner.

Judge Teresa McGonicle entered two pleas of not guilty into the record upon Nick Reiner’s agreement...

Pled "Not Guilty".
Because of course he's not.
Smh.
Wonder if he's going to still try for the NGRI defense down the road ?
I do believe he will always be a danger to others and also to himself.
Omo.

Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to murdering his parents Rob and Michele in court on Monday.

[..]

His head was shaved as he looked into the crowded courtroom, as if searching for someone he knows.

At one point, an unidentified elderly woman waved at him, and Nick mouthed 'hi' to her and the older man sitting next to her.

[..]

He is due to appear in court again on April 29.

I wonder if the PD has decided that Nick's best shot is to plead not guilty and then try and get a plea deal?

JMO, I think they're going to wait until all the psych examinations have been done and they've had a chance to observe his behavior for a while. He would have to consent to any kind of plea agreement and, if not fully evaluated, the agreement could be invalidated. They need to make sure he's fully capable of making that kind of decision, e.g. agreeing to LWOP instead of going to trial and possibly getting the DP. IANAL, JMO
