Investigators have arrested an Idaho resident on suspicion of murdering a San Rafael woman in 1973, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Michael Eugene Mullen, 75, was linked by DNA evidence to the case of Nina Fischer, who was slain at her home on Point San Pedro Road. Fischer was 31 years old.
Authorities booked Mullen into the Lemhi County jail in Idaho, where he awaits court proceedings for an extradition to California.
The victim’s husband, Gunnar Fischer, found her body after coming home in the evening from his office in San Francisco, authorities reported at the time. She had been bound, gagged and shot twice.''
''Investigators used DNA evidence collected from the crime scene, sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn said. He said investigators know of no prior connection between Mullen and the victim.''

''SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - It took over a half-century, but through the use of DNA, Marin County deputies are saying they have named and arrested a suspect in a cold case from 1973.

Authorities arrested 75-year-old Michael Eugene Mullen for the murder of Nina "Nadine" Fischer in Idaho on Wednesday.

Swedish national Nina "Nadine" Fischer was killed in November 1973 during the daytime at her San Rafael home. Her husband was at work when Mullen allegedly entered and sexually assaulted her before killing her.''

How cool is it to be alive in the time of DNA?!? Got him. May justice be swifter!

I'm glad they caught him, but I'm always struck in these cold cases how there never really is any true justice. This killer got away with murder for more than 50 years. Does he have a family? Did he get to raise children? Take vacations?

I wonder if the husband of the poor victim is still alive? His whole life was changed and he lived through a nightmare. You could never really forget coming home to find your wife bound, gagged, and murdered.

The murderer is finally caught but he got to live a full life. Something he denied his victim.

“He unequivocally denied being involved in it,” he said, adding that Mullen said he did not know Fischer.
Marin County sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Guinn testified that Mullen changed his story in a followup interview. Mullen said he had consensual sex with Fischer soon after they met outside her home, Guinn testified.
Mullen also said Fischer invited him into her house, where she told her young child to take a nap, Guinn testified.''

“There are significant aspects of the story that don’t add up,” Howard said.
Defense attorneys declined to comment after the hearing Tuesday. The court has yet to set a trial date''.
