A $50,000 reward was offered Tuesday in the investigation into the cold-case shooting death of a Long Beach police officer who was killed nearly 40 years earlier while trying to stop a violent crime.

Officer Franke Neal Lewis was returning home after his shift on Dec. 13, 1975, when he saw a man being beaten in the 6200 block of Cantel Street, the Long Beach Police Department stated in a news release.

Lewis, 28, was fatally shot as he approached the scene to stop the attacker or attackers, according to the Police Department.

Lewis’ badge, badge holder, and police ID were recovered about three months later at 915 S. Acacia Ave. in Compton. His handgun was never found.

Could Ofc Lewis have caught Randy Kraft in the act and been shot with his own gun?
