wf - Your last quote pizzes me off. They close the freeways (I5, 58, 166) if the snow STARTS to stick (I'm from the area) because no one can drive safely. Now I'm in CT and boy would they be in a tizzy at the snow we get here. They would have to shut down for the winter.

Reporter said (listening to presser live on line, no link) that he had talked to at least seven parents - student was known and had been suspended last year because of a "hit list" but was let back this year (for a second chance?????)...

Yes, in KS when I taught I many times had to drive the 20 miles in snowstorms, with black ice on road surface, etc. etc. Just a matter of familiarity with those conditions.

I was actually watching this documentary while yet another shooting was occurring-- what have we come to? And why? :tsktsk:

This gives a few good clues, imo.

Too many guns. And lack of good mental health care. And not locking up mental patients that should be locked up. Makes for a deadly combination.

Sounds like this may be a case of a kid who felt he was bullied and decided to take matters into his own hands.

I'll never understand how something like a shotgun can be left accessible so someone who is 16 would have access to it, take it out of the home and use it.

TAFT — Authorities are investigating widespread reports that a boy who opened fire in a Taft Union High School classroom Thursday specifically targeted students on a hit list.

The alleged list was compiled last year, members of the school community told reporters. The allegations surfaced quickly Thursday morning following the boy's use of a shotgun to critically injure a classmate and graze his teacher before he put down the weapon.

We lived in Pine Mountain 2 years ago. Had we not moved, this is the school my son would have gone to. Thank goodness we decided to move back to San Diego because this school didn't have a music program. Wasn't the only reason - I couldn't take the cold!

It's scary knowing we've been there, and how close to home this was. I wonder where the shooter lived (Taft is in a small community and those from Pine Mountain attend).

TAFT, Calif. (AP) — Morgan Alldredge had just finished her oceanography test when a classmate she knows well suddenly walked in the open door to her science class with a shotgun.

"He didn't say anything. He just shot right away," said the 16-year-old junior who was sitting by the doorway as the terrifying events unfolded Thursday morning at Taft Union High School, about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The round struck a boy in the chest and shoulder. The shooter then quickly pumped the gun Alldredge identified as a Winchester 12-gauge and immediately fired another round at students trying to flee out a back door.

"He had a kind of disturbing smile on his face. Kind of a smirk," said Alldredge, who estimated she was about 5 feet from the gunman.
