In regards to the kenneth fire

The suspect, believed to be in his mid-20s, was armed with a “propane tank” or “flamethrower,” according to a witness.

Locals who spotted the suspect and called 911 rallied together to corner the man, before binding his wrists with rope and zip ties and holding him down until police arrived.

“All of a sudden I hear a car come to a screeching halt, and I hear a guy running out saying, ‘Stop, stop, drop what you’re holding, drop what you’re holding,’” Renata Grinshpun, a woman involved in the citizen’s arrest, told the local news station

“The next thing we hear is, ‘Neighbours, neighbors, he’s trying to start a fire. Call 911, call 911.’ My mom ran out in a bathrobe ready to fight that guy and all of the neighbors started coming out, calling 911. We really bound together as a group.”

The arson suspect was allegedly armed with an incendiary device, according to the witness.

“He had a propane tank, or a… it was a big yellow tank, like a flame-thrower basically. The neighbor said he saw the guy behind a van, trying to light something on fire,” she continued.

The suspect claimed that he used a blowtorch “to smoke marujuana” because he “couldn’t afford a lighter,” according to Grinshpun

I’m becoming a nervous wreck. Another alert to evacuate came to my phone around 4 AM, waking me up! I saw nothing new on the Cal-Fire site, so was trying to reassure myself it was another error. Then, I looked on my Ring app, and posters were saying there was a small hill fire, only about a mile away!!
So of course, I got up.

Checking later, it seems there was no fire. The fire dept said they responded but there was nothing but a light on the hill. Maybe someone panicked, thinking it was a fire.

Then, a while ago, I saw this, which said it was apparently sent in error.

''As well as the fires, residents are concerned about the threat of looting.

"It's well publicised which areas are evacuated, so looters know which houses are empty," Mrs Hand said.

"I even had someone come to my door last night and peer through the window."

So far police have arrested about 20 people for raiding abandoned buildings, with a curfew put in place by authorities.

"My husband, who is a police officer, has been told to be on standby to knock on doors to get people evacuated and to protect homes from looters," she said.

"Thank you for all the good wishes from home and everybody here is rooting for us, which is really nice."

A Quebec water bomber fighting the wildfires in the Los Angeles area was grounded after it collided with a drone flying in the area on Thursday.Fire crews battle the Kenneth Fire in the West Hills section of Los Angeles, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP/Ethan Swope
''The incident downed all aircraft fighting the fire for nearly half an hour on Thursday while officials made sure the skies were clear, he said.
"We all know how fast a fire can travel in half an hour. So this is a seriously dangerous situation because now that fire is able to go a little more unchecked," he said.
"This makes me very angry. It is extremely irresponsible and people could have been killed."
The Los Angeles Fire Department released photos of the plane, including one showing the damage. It said the plane was struck by "a civilian drone."

Actor Milo Ventimiglia has revealed his family's Malibu home burnt down in the Los Angeles fires — an eerie reflection of the tragedy that befell his character on the NBC drama series "This Is Us."

"You start thinking about all the memories in different parts of the house and what not and then you see your neighbors houses and everything kind of around and your heart just breaks," Ventimiglia said.

Ventimiglia and his pregnant wife, Jarah, evacuated Tuesday and watched on security cameras as the flames from the Palisades Fire took over. The couple grabbed everything they could think of — but not everything, like the crib and other belongings in their baby's nursery.

"We got good friends and we got good people we're working with and we'll make do. Wife and baby and dog, most important," Ventimiglia said.

After the fictional fire in "This Is Us," Ventimiglia became an advocate for fire safety. Now, he says his interest has turned to wildfire safety and is already thinking about ways he might be able to help his community and others.

While lightning is the most common source of fires in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association, investigators were able to rule that out quickly. There were no reports of lightning in the Palisades area or the terrain around the Eaton fire, which started in east Los Angeles County and has also destroyed hundreds of homes.

The next two most common causes: fires intentionally set, and those sparked by utility lines.

They are reporting 10 dead in the various fires. 9000 homes and businesses destroyed

They've set up a way of reporting missing persons in the Palisades - they have extra staff at a community center, there are a lot of calls coming in. So many people fled on foot.

166,000 people under evacuation orders and many who are near the mandated evacuations are scared and leaving just in case.

Gov Newsome has placed a moratorium on home insurance cancellations for the burn area.

Moment arsonist is corralled and held by local citizens in Kenneth Fire

CBS News Los Angeles just reported that they let the guy go! Los Angeles DA apparently says not enough probable cause to hold him.

That article says no charges pressed at this time. He was in possession of a small blowtorch and one resident observed him trying to set Christmas trees on fire (ones that were out at the curb for pick-up).

I suppose they'll have to figure out whether any of the fires he was seen lighting resulted in the Kenneth Fire.

I'm starting to think that the homeless are starting fires just to keep warm. It's cold in LA at night. 45 degrees. Then the fires get out of control or the wind blows the sparks into the dry brush and it takes off from there.

Maybe a stupid question bit I am not really familiar with fires. Why the new fires pop up? Are they arson? I can’t grasp why so many fires just pop up.

Under these extreme wind conditions arsonists can get a thrill starting fires. It can also be a cigarette, careless use of tools among other things. I’m inclined to go with arsonists. Everyone knows that when the Santa Ana winds blow, a fire will take off quickly. Some sick people think that’s exciting.
