Cadaver dogs are searching for wildfire victims in Los Angeles, county sheriff says. Here's how they can help

From CNN's Amanda Musa
At least 11 people have died as several major wildfires continue to rage in Los Angeles County. Authorities say more bodies will likely be uncovered.

Cadaver dogs are aiding in the search for remains amid the destruction, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. Search and rescue teams with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are working alongside FEMA and other county agencies to assist with search efforts, Luna said during a news conference on Saturday.

Authorities have said they are unable to determine the full death toll from the fires until it’s safe for investigators to enter neighborhoods that are riddled with burned homes and scorched vehicles at every turn.

Cadaver dogs are trained to sniff out bodies and often find them faster than people. In 2023, dogs were used to search for bodies after the catastrophic Maui wildfires that killed more than 100 people. The disaster is regarded as one of the deadliest wildfires in recent US history.

Today's evacuation update is for Evacuation Warnings:

East side of the 405 Freeway, from the 210 freeway south into Bel-Air, to border Westwood where the line is at the margin of the UCLA campus, but NOT the campus, itself.

South of the current Mandatory Evacuation zone in Brentwood to the area of the Veterans Administration Hospial and complex

Life and death fight in LA goes on amid fears infernos could grow

Here are the latest major updates on a constantly evolving situation:

  • More than 150,000 people have now been evacuated and strict curfews overnight are in place in fire-hit areas
  • The largest of the wildfires, Palisades, is spreading eastwards - triggering new evacuation orders to be issued for parts of the wealthy Brentwood neighbourhood and nearby areas
  • The official death toll is 11 but at least 13 others are thought to be missing. It is feared the number killed could rise significantly
  • The evacuation zone was extended on Saturday and strong winds forecast in the coming days could potentially further fuel the four remaining wildfires
  • A major public health emergency has been declared, with water in some areas contaminated and people warned not to swim in the ocean due to contamination from ash
  • Mexico has sent firefighters to aid the response, as local officials seek to draft in more help from across the US
  • Experts have warned it could be several weeks before the giant infernos are fully contained
  • A major investigation to uncover the cause of the fires is under way, including into the possibility that arson was involved
  • In a series of press conferences on Saturday, local officials defended the responseand preparations in the build-up to the fires breaking out

The Palisades fire expanded 400 hectares overnight with a change in wind direction.

Today's focus is to prevent the spread through Mandeville Canyon.

Good. These matters should be spoken of in private. No-one needs this dissention all over the news while people are experiencing such a catastrophe.
I have been simply amazed at the finger pointing during a disaster. I have just never experienced that here through our many, many terrible bushfires.

imo
I almost feel like this is how our society is now... just so, so much discord and aggressiveness over everything.

Check out the embers flying from the trees due to the strength of the Santa Ana winds. (Click on the blue link, but the video is contained in the link below that).
It really demonstrates the rapid spread of fire.

Just a short video, 17 secs long, well worth seeing to understand what has been happening.

There's a tremendous amount of anger and frustration at the way in which the wildfires have been dealt with.
I'm not there dealing with any of that, I'm on a different continent, but fwiw I feel tremendous anger towards the arsonists who allegedly started some of these fires! I know I've posted some of this before, but What is wrong with people?? How can people get a kick out of starting a fire which has so much potential to destroy and kill?? It's beyond me, I really don't understand it. So, okay, life's been hard, you hate every person on the earth, don't care what happens to them (not saying that's a healthy or normal state of mind), but what did the wild animals who die in wildfires do to you to deserve their fear, pain and injury/death??

It's probably easier somehow to direct anger and frustration at people you can see (in the news) and 'grasp' like firefighters, city leadership, politicians and quite possibly the latter two share some of the guilt for slow or chaotic responses, underfunding, cutting funding etc etc and other things I haven't heard about, but ultimately - who started the fire?? Who was that careless? Or, worse, malicious? They deserve to feel and hear some anger!!

In this originally quoted by @iamshadow21, law enforcement are quoted "it's likely many of the small fires will turn out to have been the work of arson":mad::mad:
Small fires spread and become bigger. They're not some joke.

The Palisades fire expanded 400 hectares overnight with a change in wind direction.

Today's focus is to prevent the spread through Mandeville Canyon.

And to prevent spread north of Mulholand Drive into Encino, at the northern edge of the fire. The wind change makes this more unlikely now, as the Santa Ana wind is back, blowing from the original north-to-south over Pacific Palisades, blowing away from Encino.

However the upper end of Brentwood would be receiving the wind change direction and the live KTLA footage is showing some life fires in the hills above northern Brentwood.
