I've been reading this whole thread looking for anything about how these fires actually started, because that was something I didn't know. I think I understand how they spread, especially right now with these high winds and the embers, but I never knew how they started.

So I wonder what they mean, "started accidentally in someone's back yard"? AFAIK, people don't burn their trash in their yards round there, so maybe a grilling accident?

I know I've seen arson is suspected in at least one fire. And I thought that sometimes the power companies will shut off the electricity because there's a risk of that catching fire, but I think that's only if there is already something on fire. I know lightning strikes can start a fire, especially when it's very dry. So do they know how this all got started initially?
This time there was no lightning, but hurricane-force winds and very dry conditions.

My sister told me last night she's stress-eating.
Tell her that it's a hind brain survival response beyond her control, not weakness or lack of willpower. Because it is.

Her brain is commanding her body to stock up on calories now, in case circumstances change and she can't access food.

I've seen big fires my whole life, since I have always lived in a country where every Summer lots and lots of acres burn, but I've never seen anything like this, everything in Pacific Palisades has been burnt.

How is the fire in Hollywood Hills? That can get bad really fast. Oh, and any info on the Getty Villa?
I think that the Hollywood Hills/Sunset fire is out and that my grandparents house may have been spared...

I guess that's my excuse, too.

Carbo loading as instinctive survival behaviour, despite being about 500 miles away.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about the Sunset fire being active in the last day. I think all the evacuation orders around that area were rescinded.

You're reading the information, you're watching the pictures, and your conscious brain knows it's far away, but all your hind brain sees is danger. Your hind brain can't count the miles, its job is to scramble for immediate peril. That's how we survived as a species.

Have these fires become worse? It reminds me of the Colorado fire that went so fast through a populated area, people were literally shopping at Costco, and had to run for their lives.

The Lahaina fire, devastated the area. And created it own "fire tornado".

Montana had a few bad fires this summer.

Is this part of "climate change"? Or are more people living in areas that shouldn't have been developed?
Climate change. People have been living in Los Angeles since it was Mexico. I was born and raised there. It encompasses many smaller cities.

law enforcement are quoted "it's likely many of the small fires will turn out to have been the work of arson":mad::mad:
Small fires spread and become bigger. They're not some joke.
Two people have been arrested, and one of them is a 60-ish-year-old woman!

In case you thought maybe the Mexican crew was going to be small - they sent over 70 people to help out.

I just love seeing those big fires turn into clouds of steam.
The night shots of them doing it are something else. You can see immediately when they've hit their mark, because that section of the fire line just immediately turns dark.
