Thank you, @JennieM
This is the park I will be working at, about 5 minutes from here.
I'm going to take these people some of the items on the sign today.
I'm not turning on the tv.
I'm scattered and weepy enough as it is, so I appreciate all these posts to keep me informed locally. I've been keeping close to home as I'm terrified of going anywhere without my dog, even when there is no wind. My wind chime was tinkling under my window last night and I froze in the bed with panic. It stopped and never did it again, but the edginess is going to last a long time.

Oh, charminglane. We are all with you. It sure sounds as though you are making sound decisions.

Especially not turning on the TV.

29 arrests made so far in LA County during Eaton and Palisades fires

From CNN's Chris Boyette
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna speaks during a news conference on Thursday, January 9.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna speaks during a news conference on Thursday, January 9.

The total number of people arrested during the wildfires in Los Angeles has climbed to approximately 29, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Sunday.

“Yesterday in Palisades, we had one arrest for curfew violation. Unfortunately, they resisted arrest,” Luna said. “And Eaton, we had six arrests last night, three for curfew violations and three for additional charges, including carrying a concealed firearm and narcotics-related charges.”

According to Luna, 25 people have been arrested in the area of the Eaton Fire and four in the area of the Palisades Fire.

Luna recalled the LAPD arrests of individuals who were posing as firefighters to walk freely in and out of houses.

“…He was dressed like a fireman, and he was not. He’d just got caught burglarizing a home,” the sheriff said.

Luna said the individuals that authorities were running into in the fire zones do not live in those areas.

“The individuals that we’re contacting do not live in the areas where we’re arresting them; we’re finding out they have zero business being in these areas,” Luna said. “So I do want to reiterate to our communities: if you do not belong in these affected areas, do not go there. You are subject to arrest.”

The water system is ready for the fight, Los Angeles County fire chief says

From CNN's Lauren Mascarenhas

“All of the reports that I’ve received is that the L.A. County water system is ready and it will be prepared to assist us in fighting a wildland fire,” Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said during a news conference Sunday.

Seventy water tenders previously requested by Cal Fire have arrived, Marrone said.

High winds are expected to make the battle to get the fires under control even tougher.

“The more resources that are flooding in to help us with our current fires, the better we are prepared to pre-deploy, knowing that this wind event is coming,” Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin M. Crowley added.

Palisades Fire: Fears the 10-mile-wide blaze could continue to spread

For the last six days the Palisades fire has been growing, and it is now 10 miles (16.5km) wide.

It's destroyed around 5,000 structures and killed five people, officials say.

Fire fighters have been working around the clock to battle it, and it is now 11% contained. This means they have created barriers around 11% of the more than 23,000 acre blaze.

But, with strong winds forecast there are fears the blaze will continue to spread, as it encroaches on the upscale suburb of Brentwood.

A graphic with six different pictures. Each is a zoomed out, basic map of California, and it shows the last six days and how the fire grew in size

Active duty military personnel are standing by ready to be deployed to help contain the wildfires, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administrator Deanne Criswell tells ABC News.

She adds that FEMA has the funding needed to support the response effort.

Criswell has been speaking to several US outlets this morning about key issues. One of these issues is insurance, which is on the minds of many people who have lost their homes in the wildfires.

Officials are concerned about insurance carriers pulling out of the market: "These fire risks are increasing. Without insurance people won’t have the tools and resources to build their lives," Criswell tells CNN.

LA wildfire death toll 'still under investigation' - medical examiner's office

Rachel Flynn
Live page reporter

Earlier on Sunday, the LA Medical Examiner's Office released an update to say the the total death toll from the wildfires in the region was at least 16.

Following the LA County news conference, where we received various updates, there was no updated total death toll.

I reached out to the LA Medical Examiner's Office, who say that "no total number is available at this time" and that the total death toll is "still under investigation".

Here is a recap of what we learnt from the press conference with Mayor Karen Bass and other LA officials:

  • The threat of fires in LA is still "very high" with strong winds forecast and "critical fire weather conditions to continue until Wednesday", LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone says
  • Evacuation numbers have dropped, with around 105,000 residents still under evacuation orders and 87,000 under evacuation warnings
  • Three people have been found dead, and there are 16 missing persons reports within the jurisdiction of LA County, officials say
  • So far, there have been approximately 29 arrests, as those arrested are not believed to be from the local area and "have zero business being there", Sheriff Robert Luna says
  • LA City Police Chief Jim McDonnell says limited access was initially allowed for some evacuated residents to collect medication and pets. However, the demand became so overwhelming that the practice had to be suspended today
  • Kathryn Barger, chair of the LA County Board of Supervisors, says she sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump yesterday, inviting him to witness the wildfire situation as Mayor Bass is "confident" he will come to LA
  • On the fires: the Hurst Fire is 89% contained at 799 acres; the Palisades Fire is at 23,707 acres with 11% containment; and the Eaton Fire is 27% contained, covering 14,117 acres

More than 13,000 people have donated over $6m to the California Community Foundation to help wildfire relief efforts, Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass said.

“People are coming from everywhere to help us and make sure that we are ready for the days ahead. So to them, I want to say thank you,” Bass said.

Mapped: Three fires continue to burn around Los Angeles

Map showing the location of the three blazes around Los Angeles with the title: California firefighters tackling three blazes. The Palisades fire, Hurst fire and Easton fire are labelled on the map.

Three blazes continue to burn around Los Angeles, with the fire threat remaining "very high" due to strong winds, LA county officials have said.

The largest fire is the Palisades, which has now burnt through 23,000 acres and is 11% contained.

The Eaton fire is the second biggest and has burnt through 14,000 acres. It is 27% contained.

The Hurst fire has grown to 799 acres and has been almost fully contained.

These photos show the damage caused when a drone struck a firefighting plane

A Canadian “Super Scooper” aircraft was damaged by a civilian drone on Thursday.

A Canadian “Super Scooper” aircraft was damaged by a civilian drone on Thursday.

Photos released by the FBI show the damage done to the wing of a Canadian “Super Scooper” plane when it collided with a civilian drone Thursday, forcing it to be temporarily grounded.

The specifically designed CL-415 firefighting plane, used to scoop up more than 1,500 gallons of ocean water, was helping to fight the devastating Palisades Fire.

A hole is seen in the wing of the plane.

The collision caused a three-by-six-inch hole in the plane’s wing, according to the FBI.

The FBI said it is seeking the public’s help to identify a suspect.

“These fire suppression efforts using aircraft is probably the most effective tool that our firefighters have against fighting these fires to help contain them,” Akil Davis, FBI assistant director in charge of the Los Angeles field office, told CNN on Saturday. “When you take one plane out of commission like that, it’s going to impact the speed in which the fire grows, it’s going to cause loss of property, potentially loss of life, and it’s a danger to everybody all around.”

Authorities were able to recover some pieces of the privately-owned drone, said Davis.

The damaged plane, Quebec 1, should be back up flying by Monday, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said Friday.

Authorities have vowed to prosecute all drone flights in areas over the wildfires, which they say are illegal and may interfere with firefighting efforts.

So sad for those who lost their lives in this tragedy, may they rest in peace. :(

How terrible for those who lost their homes.
People may have their life intact, but to lose everything like that !
It can take years to build and collect items for your home.
Cherished mementoes and furnishings purchased through savings and hard work, just gone in a few minutes.

I want to assume most if not all had adequate fire ins., but will the insurer hold to the agreement for the cost of the house and property ?
For those who've paid their premiums on time I would think the insurer would have to ?
Will it take years for the full payment, though... that's what I'm wondering :

State Farm had already said in 2023 that it would no longer offer home insurance to new customers in California, in part because of catastrophe exposure. Allstate, the sixth-largest home insurer in California, also said that year it was halting new policies in the state.

Omo.

Ugh. The drone must have embedded itself in the wing of the air tanker.

Hopefully, there is some information available from examining the parts that will lead to the perp.

Newsom suspends some environmental regulations to expedite rebuilding

From CNN's Lauren Mascarenhas
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Sunday suspending some requirements to build under state environmental laws in an effort to help fire victims rebuild faster.

Newsom’s order suspends some permit and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act and the California Coastal Act for people impacted by the wildfires.

“We want you to come back, rebuild – and rebuild with higher quality building standards, more modern standards; we want to make sure that associated costs with that are not disproportionate, especially in a middle-class community like this,” Newsom said in an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press in Altadena, California.

The order also directs state agencies to identify other permitting requirements that can be suspended to allow faster, more affordable rebuilding.

“California leads the nation in environmental stewardship. I’m not going to give that up, but one thing I won’t give into is delay,” Newsom said on Meet the Press.

Newsom also extended protections against price gouging on building materials and other essential goods for the next year.

I don't feel like this is the time to be second-guessing the Governor.

With the thousands of firefighters brought in, all those planes and the organizers who coordinate it all, there is a substantial increase in complexity of support in housing and organizing additional non-firefighting personnel who are competing with thousands of homeless evacuees for housing, food, and supplies.

Los Angeles fire evacuees face "obscene" price gouging as California AG issues stark warning

"We put in an application at a house... that was listed at $17,000 a month, and they told us if we didn't pay $30,000, we weren't going to get it," Lieberman said. "They told me they have people ready to offer more and pay cash. It's absolutely insane."

Article here--
The sharp practice has drawn the ire of California's Attorney General Rob Bonta, who warned Saturday there are laws against it.

"Price gouging is illegal. We will not stand for it. We will hold you accountable. We will prosecute," he told reporters, adding those found guilty could land themselves a year in jail.

Once a state of emergency is declared – as it has been for the out-of-control fires – vendors cannot increase their prices by more than 10%....
