Suisun City Woman's Disappearance Still A Mystery
Apr 29, 2010 10:34 pm US/Pacific

The car was unlocked and the keys were missing, but police found Le's cell phone, wallet and backpack inside the car, police said.

Investigators were able to confirm that Le had been at the bookstore between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. before she disappeared. She is a nursing student at Solano Community College and spent most of her evenings at the bookstore studying, police said.

Dadisho said investigators have not found anyone who would want to harm Le and neither her family nor her friends know of any boyfriends or romantic issues she might have been involved in.

Friends, family use Facebook to help with search for nursing student
Last updated 12 hrs ago

Meantime, Le's family has become increasingly worried. Her brother Huong Le said, "It's been four days. Haven't heard anything, have no clues."

"There's no way she went to a friend's house or hang out somewhere. Something is wrong. Something is going on here," added Le.

He thinks his sister is "out there somewhere and needs help right now."

Praying for Phuong's worried brother Huong and her whole family, that their loved Phuong will soon be home with them safe and unharmed.

Although I live in another city now, I was born and raised in Fairfield and stay there every weekend at my boyfriend's house or with my sister and her family. I was in the shopping center at about 5pm that day with my niece. It was a beautiful day and the parking lot was packed. People were sitting outside of B&N and sitting outside of the adjoining businesses eating on the patio and brick seating areas.

To give WSers some insight on the area:

The shopping center is directly across the street from the Westfield Mall. The mall is anchored by the city's only movie theater. The 24 hour Fitness gym is in a separate building but shares the mall parking lot. FYI, 24 Hr Fitness doesn't stay open 24 hours.

Gateway Drive runs between the back side of the mall and 3 clusters of shopping centers. There is one section that is mostly restaraunts. A fairly new hotel sits behind the restaurants. The second strip of businesses has a GameStop, a mens clothing store, a cell phone store and a few other businesses.

The B&N shopping center is always busy. There is a Chipotle Mexican food chain restaurant, a Coldstone ice cream parlor, a new Indian restaurant, a furniture store and a store that sells pictures/frames.

B&N is a popular hang out spot for people of all ages. It is possible she wasn't there to study but just there because she likes to read. My boyfriend and I went a couple weekends ago and ended up staying for 2 hours.

Coldstone, where my niece and I went, closes at 9pm. The teen that served us said he could tell it was going to be busy that night. My niece and I usually go to Coldstone just before closing and even at 9pm, the parking lot has people coming and going so an abduction is highly unlikely.

IMO, the fact that her belongings were in the trunk aren't a big deal. I do that all the time when I don't want to be bothered with my purse. Grab some cash, put it in my pocket and lock everything else in the trunk. Of course her keys would be missing. She would've kept those with her to get back in the car.

There are several hospitals in Solano County. Kaiser Permanente Foundation has hospitals in nearly every city in a hundred mile radius, including one on the same street as B&N.

What I find puzzling is why she would call the sister's ex-boss/family friend, to vent her frustrations to. A young woman her age would usually call her best friend or her boyfriend to vent after a fight with a family member.

I assumed the man Le called was a long time friend of the family but the brother called the man his 'sister's ex boss' instead of referring to him as a family friend when LE showed him the 6 photos. I wonder if he became friends with the family while Le's sister worked for him and how many times his number shows up on her (and her sister's) phone bill.

Bold mine.

I think the brother meant that it was Phuong's ex boss...when he said he was my sister's ex boss. :)

Wondering if any, and how many, males were in Phuong's nursing class. Could be someone in her class was enamored with her.

Please refer to the victim, Phuong Le, as Phuong rather than as Le, so that we don't develop confusion between references to Le (Phuong Le) and LE (Law Enforcement/police).

Please be aware that PL here at WS also is commonly used as a reference to the Parking Lot :) If you use Phuong's initials (PL) please be sure you're clear that you're referring to Phuong Le versus the Parking Lot, so we don't develop confusion there.

Thanks!

On NG's show tonight someone said her keys weren't found. I think what's crucial is an absolute confirmation she was in the B&N store. I'm still not seeing why she'd put her wallet, ID & cell phone in the trunk before driving away. What if she needed them? MOO

Not to repeat myself but, I have done this ... if I'm meeting my husband at B&N, he pays for coffee, etc. ... so I toss my purse in the trunk, cell phone, wallet and all.

Keys are missing. That's what I'm thinking - she threw her stuff in the trunk, had keys in hand to get in the car, and was abducted. Or the perp took her in her car elsewhere, keys dropped on the ground there, perp threw her things in the trunk, drove car back to bookstore, parked it there, and took off.

I simply can't believe this girl would leave her family to worry. I just can't.

I just thought of something ... probably silly, but still: what if the keys dropped in the trunk, along with her backpack, and she closed the trunk before she realized it? Would she call AAA or a nearby service to get back into the trunk?

Just a thought ...

Just realized, if that happened, her brother or LE would have found them.

BBM. I havn't caught up on this thread yet, so please forgive me...I will correct myself when I catch up, lol. Anyway....I am thinking about her handing out those fliers. I think on the NG show they said she did, so I would like to know what neighborhood she did so in? Wondering if it could have been the same neighborhood as those attacks on Monday? If so, maybe she was being followed?

What does BBM stand for? TIA

If I were going from one place to another, like a gym, and knew I wouldn't need any of my things, I would put them in the trunk before getting to my destination. I wouldn't want someone seeing me put valuables in my trunk at the gym, I would do it at my stop before the gym, kwim? I see her going into the B&N, having coffee, reading, relaxing, then deciding to go to the gym as she always (?) did, so she tossed her stuff in the trunk, and someone pulled up, or walked up. Maybe someone "needing help"...being a nurse, it's always my nature to want to help.

I am thinking someone had been following her for some time. They knew her routine. They likely watched her and knew she would want to "help" or would be easy to engage in conversation.

Poor woman....I am very concerned for her and fear the worst has already happened.

Bolded by me: Maybe someone she knew from the gym? I hope LE are checking into that.

I thought she graduated but had a test to pass...

could be wrong on that... but regardless...

She could have been studying regarding future interviews... to answer questions etc.

  • #252
Great observation! Even if she was looking at resumes or researching the points a character reference needs to address - why would anyone depict her as studying? Sounds like the person didn't know she passed her boards and thought she was still in school. Time to re-interview!!! moo

...Wish I understood why helping her sister was upsetting - did she have plans?

...Wish I knew why Le called her ex-boss to tell him about the tiff with sister! Or was that really the reason they talked? Did Le ask ex boss for a referenece or part time work? moo

...Wish I knew why Le was so upset about not having a job a few weeks after passing boards...did she owe money to someone?

I wonder if she had a laptop with her? I never heard it mentioned ... so probably not, but just wondering if she did. It's hard to tell, if you see someone on a laptop, if they're studying or surfing the internet.

Just wanted to add my comments regarding student nursing, the stress, and the job shortage...

The stress of nursing school is enormous. It is unrelenting, constant, and you're always operating in high gear. There is no 'down time'. One school in my area had two suicides this year...and we lost a classmate to an auto accident due to lack of sleep. Then the boards come. You spend all your waking hours studying, and your dreamtime is filled with anxiety dreams. There are few people in my class who are not taking medications to help with anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances. It is an utterly overwhelming and insanely stressful time in the life of a nurse.

The fact that very few new grads are getting jobs also is a significant worry. Students graduate with great grades, but as was stated upthread, there are few jobs for a new grad. One year experience is what I see on all the openings in my area, and we can't find jobs to get that experience. Personally, I want to go into a relatively tough area, so there are programs for me to go to...but most folks don't get hired right away.

Additionally, the ADN program degree - which is what most places offer - is no longer acceptable to a lot of places. The shift towards a BSN or Masters is preferred, and often, applicants are not even looked at unless they are enrolled in a BSN or Master's program. That narrows the field down even more.

Add to all that the stress of having to pay back loans. Most government student loans have a 6 month period after you graduate where you don't have to start making payments. But at the 6 month time, you do. Income needs to be in place to actually start paying those loans back, right? But if one can't find work, one can't start paying back the loans...and so on.

She may not have appeared stressed, but I can personally assure you she was...and likely highly so. Including stress, she was probably discouraged. Add to that family fights (mild or not), and things can go 'snap' in someone's world...I'm struggling to keep my head, and I'm not even in her shoes yet.

While some/all of this information may not pertain to her being missing, I think that a better understanding of the stress and enormous pressure that a student nurse and/or a new grad is under may help understand why she was upset about handing out flyers for her sister, arguing, and perhaps just needing some downtime at B/N or the gym. It may also contribute to her not being as aware of her surroundings as she normally would be, or doing things that are not in her normal pattern of behavior.

And I also think that the call to her former boss was likely to find out if there was any work available; if she was facing student loan repayment in the near future, that would be a good reason to call him...or to get a letter of recommendation from him so that she can have a more full resume and be able to show that she is a good employee, instead of just a student nurse/new grad looking for a job in a market which is tight, tight, tight.

And please also don't forget that California's budget is non-existant, and there are cutbacks happening right and left. That will also affect the training programs that a new grad can access...

And at the bottom of it all, I am hoping and praying for the best for her.

She had just submitted an application to NorthBay Medical Center and had asked Tracy Fields for a recommendation. Fields was Le's former instructor at Solano Community College.

"Nurses are all having trouble finding jobs, so they're discouraged," Fields said, though nothing of Le's behavior indicated she was depressed or unhappy.

Indeed, though she studied hard to pass the NCLEX, Le remained relaxed, her brother said.

Le is a native of Vietnam and immigrated to the United States about 14 years ago.

Helps to organize my thinking - Phuong Le's short time-line so far - any additions, corrections please leave a comment.

12:00 - 3:00pm (Sunday) - Phuong Le passes out fliers for sister's hair salon; small tiff with sister regarding such.

4:00pm (Sunday) - Phuong Le left residence at Suison; did not tell family her destination.

6:00pm (Sunday) - Last call on cell phone to Tchu N****, friend and former boss (Postal Express, Suisan City) who claims Phuong Le was distraught about financial situation and/or job hunt and/or passing out fliers.

8:30pm (Sunday) - Witness sees Phuong Le inside B&N in coffee shop reading book; claims Phoung not stressed. Phoung not seen on surveillance.

3:00am (Monday) - Brother searches for sister at 24h gym & B&N parking lot.
Found car (white Civic Honda) in B&N parking lot, back windows partially down, pack, cell phone, driver's license, and wallet in trunk. No keys.

3:30am (Monday) - Police contacted

LE looked at car in parking lot. Called away for another problem

Friday, April 30th - Phuong Le's 25th birthday!

6:00pm (Sunday) - Last phone call on cell phone was to Tchu N****, friend and former boss (Postal Express, suisan City) who claims Phoung was distraught about financial situation.

So, can't they check her pings on her phone to determine her location between 4pm and 8pm???

Also, check her calls with the cell phone companies. She could of deleted any of her calls.

The stress is very high! We also had a suicide in my nursing school class.

I can only speak for myself, but when I was looking for a job as I neared graduation, I reviewed interviewing resources, and worked on my resume. I wanted a job that required ACLS certification, and if I hadn't been offered an internship in a program for a hospital that sent me to ACLS classes, I would have studied it myself and "attempted" (lol) to pass the ACLS on my own. Maybe she didn't want just any job in nursing? Maybe, like myself, she wanted into a specialized area and needed certification before they would even look at her? IMO, she could have been at B&N, doing any number of things that looked like studying to someone who was used to seeing her study there.

I think they need to look at that witness again, no doubt!

BBM this was my mistake. I am unable to find anything saying the witness said she looked like she was studying. All references I have found since I posted that say that the witness said she looked like she was reading a book, not studying.

Please accept my apologies.

Location of B and N compared to the targeted women on Monday. All within a few blocks radius.

I have been given permission to post the map I made of some sex offenders in the area. No names, just a map. I imagine that the FBI is looking into that possibility among others.

Here, you can also enter an address, and it will give another variation of the map I posted for an area.
