"Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz said the criminal charge, "possession, sales or distribution of obscene matter which depicts persons under 18 years of age," is considered a wobbler offense, which means it can be charged as a felony or misdemeanor.

While simple possession of child pornography can net a year in county jail, a distribution conviction can mean six years or more in prison.

Cabrera said it was likely some of those arrested will face federal charges, while others will be tried in Monterey County court."

SALINAS, Calif. -
David John Stevens, a Salinas man accused of videotaping himself sexually molesting children and uploading it on the Internet, died from flu-like symptoms after he became ill in the Monterey County Jail, sheriff's deputies said.

Stevens, 58, was arrested on 37 counts of child molestation in May after an international manhunt. If convicted, he would have faced 100 years in prison.
