Found Deceased CA - Rachel Nguyen, 20, & Joseph Orbeso, 21, Joshua Tree Nat'l Park, 27 July 2017 #1

I wonder if someone can turn this information into a color coded troop map. Do we know what carrier JO had?

So we know they entered the park at 6:45 am on Thursday morning. Around 4:00 pm that same day, JOs phone pinged within cell tower range of the car.

More and more, I'm starting to really think they were back at the car at 4:00 pm, and went out for a second hike since it doesn't a get dark until 8-9 pm.

If they did that, having been out and physically active through the hottest hours of the day, they were probably already pretty tired, and maybe suffering from the heat, when they set out again.

I assume (and of course could be wrong) that their very early start was precisely to avoid the hottest hours of the day, eg set off at 7am and expect to be back by 11am. If so, how likely is it that other visitors had the same idea and maybe saw them arriving and setting out on their initial planned walk?

On the other hand, if that trailhead carpark is the sort of place where nobody else would be around at that time of the morning, I wonder if they could have run into dodgy characters doing something illegal and were abducted from there and murdered elsewhere. Joseph's phone could have been snatched from him and thrown out of the car window, landing far enough off the roadside to not be found before the battery went dead. Maybe it's out there just waiting for someone to stumble across it.

I still have a feeling they stayed out all night from the night before and ended the celebration with a sunrise hike. An airbnb is not like a hotel... the owner was there and stated he wasn't sure if the came home the night before the hike. If they did not it's highly unlikely they had any supplies.

Correction. The AirBnB owner went there on Friday, and said the couple seemed as if they had not been there Thursday night, and said nothing about Wednesday night. They were then reported missing.

I didn't realize just how far away the Serin rd tower was until I looked last night. Now seeing your map, what is quite interesting is there 7 or 8 other towers are closer. So why ping the Serin tower? I wonder are all these others out of commision?

I agree that it shouldn't be ruled out that, even perhaps at an early stage, they crossed the road and went south. But I don't think the ping means they were at the car at 4. The park brochure advises:

There is "no cell phone reception" in the park, officially... For the vast majority of the park, your cellphone will be useless (remember, the park is bigger than Rhode Island). But, there are a few secrets. To get Cell Phone reception in the park, hike up to the top of one of the hills/rock piles (cell phone reception is kind of a reward for hikers). Service is very good up high.

There are other, not as high places, where the service isn't good enough to make a call, but the phone will briefly connect with a tower.

Edit- you are correct. Apologies, i thought they were hiking Friday morning when it says they were missing. It was Thursday morning they actually went missing/hiking.

About crossing the paved road to get to a different canyon... we are assuming many things. First, possibly they did initially hike in a northerly direction. Who's to say though, that they didn't feel confident so opt to also hike a second trail later in the day, and THAT'S when things went sideways.

They could have refreshed at the car, then ventured southerly for a quick hike before leaving the park, but then got lost on the return. It would not surprise me if they were located in a place absolutely no where near where SAR had initially searched, and very very far.

Joshua Tree isn't really a hotbed of criminal activities, though. Criminals don't like heat and dehydration any more than other people do.

Joshua Tree National Park FB page just posted this news release. Family is offering $10,000 reward and it even mentions that some think they may be alive elsewhere. Interesting.

“The families of the missing pair have asked the public to engage in helping their recovery,” Jennie Albrinck, a spokeswoman for Joshua Tree, said in a statement. “It is their hope that the missing party may have left on their own accord and are alive somewhere outside the park.”
Family members plan to discuss the reward at a press conference at Maze Loop, a popular trailhead where the vehicle Orbeso and Nguyen used and fresh footprints were found by searchers July 28. The couple entered Joshua Tree the previous day, park officials have said.
