N.C. mother, grandmother arrested after infant brought to hospital in critical condition

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (TCD) -- Police arrested the 32-year-old mother and 55-year-old grandmother of a 10-month-old child after she was transported to the hospital last week with critical injuries.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. (TCD) -- A 41-year-old man and his two partners reached a plea deal this week on charges related to the physical and sexual abuse of multiple children in their home.

On Jan. 26, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and social workers from the Butte County Children’s Services Division responded to allegations of child abuse at a school, according to Butte County District Attorney Michael Ramsey. As a result of the investigation, five children between the ages of 4 and 16 were taken into protective custody.

Chavez was reportedly in a long-term polyamorous relationship with the children’s mothers, Amanda Johnson, 38, and Kelsey Cabrera, 35. Ramsey said they all lived together in the Colter Way home.

Investigators discovered that Chavez sexually abused some of the children and physically abused all of them for over a year. Ramsey remarked that the abuse was so frequent that it was "impossible to fully comprehend the extent of what the children endured."

Investigators were told by one child that Chavez shot them with BB guns and used paddles to beat and whip them, and he also punched and kicked them. The child further revealed that Chavez took "pleasure in torturing a young boy in the home," inflicting extensive bruising and beating him to the point where he could not stand.

Ramsey said Chavez "burned a young girl with cigarettes to her face" and would "threaten to harm the children if they ever disclosed any of the abuse."

Chavez was arraigned on Jan. 31 on multiple charges, including sexual and physical abuse of minors, as well as dissuading witnesses, according to Ramsey. Additional charges were added for child , torture, and sex charges.

Prosecutors say Chavez’s reign of household terror impacted five minor children between the ages of 4 and 16 years old. Specifically, his plea was in relation to multiple counts of rape and molestation of four female children; and one count of torture of a young boy.

The five children shared two mothers, Amanda Johnson, 38, and Kelsey Cabrera, 35, each of whom pleaded no contest to four counts of felony child abuse and one count of dissuading witnesses.

Chavez faces 80 years to life in state prison; the female defendants face up to 10 years and 8 months each in prison.

Chavez is slated to be sentenced on May 17; Johnson and Cabrera are slated to be sentenced on May 24.

According to the DA's Office, Chavez's attorney requested Chavez be released pending sentencing, saying there were "difficulties" with other inmates at the jail. However, they said the judge denied the request. Chavez is set to be sentenced on May 17. Additionally, Johnson and Cabrera are scheduled for sentencing on May 24. Until then, the DA's office says all three are being held inside the Butte County Jail.
