Crews are again searching for a Truckee skier who was last seen at Northstar California Resort on Saturday.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says 43-year-old Rory Angelotta had planned to have Christmas dinner with friends, but he did not show up.

Deputies say Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstock lift around 11:30 a.m. and then an emergency ping on his phone showed a short call was made from the Northstar area at 11:25 a.m. before the phone was shut off.

They say his car was also found in the Northstar parking lot.

Deputies say searchers responded and combed the mountain and surrounding areas, despite extreme weather. Rescue personnel were on skis, snowmobiles, and a snowcat during their search. They faced high avalanche danger, strong winds, whiteout flurries, frigid temperatures, and heavy snow loads before calling off their search in the evening, on December 26th. Deputies say search efforts continue today, but due to the ongoing severe storm and closed highways, searchers face significant challenges.

Sounds like he's an experienced skier, fingers crossed he's hunkered down somewhere

His tag was scanned AFTER the emergency call? Or thereabouts. This is a strange one imo

It's so bad up there. I have relatives up near there and I was told they had 6-10 inches of snow on the outdoor decks.

And roads are closed..

I hope they can find him.

22 inches of snow in just the past 12 hours and it keeps coming.

I-80 to Tahoe closed indefinitely, 89 blocked by avalanche

A punishing snowstorm has nearly every conceivable route in or out of the Tahoe area closed indefinitely, Caltrans said Monday. Days of heavy snowfall, gusting winds, whiteout conditions and at least one avalanche have disappeared the Sierra's major highways into the snowy landscape. CHP said Sunday that even its vehicles were having difficulty finding the road.

6 to 10 feet, not inches.

NorthStar had 35” last night, and about 6 feet since Xmas day, and 10 feet since Thursday. Avalanche blasting is still happening which is concerning if he is on the mountain and somehow making it through. The storm is clearing and lows tonight are forecast to be single digit or lower.

Northstar autoscans passes when you get on a lift, so it makes sense he would make a call and then get on a lift, most people do not want their phone out while on a lift for fear of dropping it and never being able to find it in the deep snow.

I think the call was not an emergency call, the ping used to find out where his phone was and recent activity was emergency…

The recent rain and snow has brought CA the most annual precipitation it’s had since 1989 and the most December snow since 1970.

The storm, which began over the holiday weekend, shattered records for snowfall and low temperatures across the West.

At a research station operated by the Central Sierra Snow Lab of the University of California, Berkeley, the snowfall for December surpassed 193 inches as of Monday morning — a record, researchers said. The previous record of 179 inches was set in 1970, said the lab, which is at an elevation of 6,894 feet.

Officials with the sheriff’s office told KCRA that searchers have been unable to find tracks or other evidence of where Angelotta may have gone. Angelotta is new to the area, but is an experienced skier who officials believe had avalanche equipment on him, KCRA reported.

His FB pictures show him skiing the fresh powder, off the beaten path. It looks like he is very experienced and likes to go find the fresh snow.

But there was so much new snow that day---several feet had fallen in the previous 2 days? So he could have ended up in a fresh pocket of snow somewhere off grid---and he wasn't reported missing until 10 pm that same night---so that was 12 hours later. :(

They may not find him until spring....

Body of skier missing since Christmas found near neighborhood in California mountains

Search and rescue teams discovered Rory Angelotta’s body about half a mile from the Schaffer's Mill community near the town of Truckee.

"It is possible Angelotta was attempting to find the neighborhood near Truckee when he succumbed to the elements," the sheriff's office said. "There was no indication of any suspicious or unusual activity."

On Saturday, sheriff's officials said the area where his body was found was far enough away from the resort that it had not been included in the searches.
