Well, I agree that the older photo of Rose is similar to the forensic
sculpture.
You should know that the bust has been re-done and looks slightly
different now. The sculpting was done a handful of years ago when Jane
Doe's body was exhumed. The skull had cracked in several places and
suffered water damage as well. THe skull was taken to SFSU's
anthropology department for assistance in rebuilding it. The area from
the upper bridge of the nose down to the maxilla were very bad and I
believe that they were approximated on the sculpting, so I don't know
how accurate it really is. I called the sculptor at home tonight and
she will also look at the photos.
Rose was about 23 years old in 1979 - Jane Doe was placed between 16 &
19, about 5'3" tall and 125 pounds. She had very light brown hair and
blue eyes. No scars, marks or tattoos were uncovered during the
examination.
We do have dental on file and fingerprints. Did Rose have driver's
license or arrest record? If so, her old file can be pulled at the DMV
or local PD and the thumb print compared. Your family would need to
seek authorization for that, as we can't say for sure she is deceased,
therefor we have no legal jurisdiction (w/ DMV, but if you have old
arrest info we can contact that agency). I would also suggest that
your family try to track down or recall dental records / attributes.
Jane Doe had a significant overbite, although her teeth appeared fairly
straight. There were fillings in the molars on both sides of the jaw.
If your family hasn't already, I would suggest they file a missing
persons report. DNA can be collected from living relatives on her
mother's side. Jane Doe has DNA on file with the CA DOJ (CODIS) -so if
a DNA profile was added to the system down the road, it could
conceivably hit on a Jane Doe anywhere in the country.
I'm sorry to respond to your plead for assistance with a homework
assignment, but this is how I would suggest we proceed. My gut feeling
is that this not her, based on a few factors: Age, dark-dark brown
hair, no obvious roll of the lower lip indicating significant overbite
(Jane Doe's photo has an obvious protrusion of the lower lip due to the
dental problems). I strongly believe that our Jane Doe is much younger
that the estimated age range of 16 to 19.
I will send a copy of this e-mail and another with the photo's you
sent to the sculptor that created the bust.
Get back to me with the above suggestions and we'll go from there.
Respectfully,
Darrell Harris,
Coroner's Investigator
County of Marin
