Julie, thanks so much for joining us. Your recent responses are the most information we've learned about Synanon, and your openess and honesty are appreciated. We're just trying to piece together what happened to a young girl who only wanted someone, anyone to "love her love her love her". As I'm sure you've read, she hasn't been heard from since February, 1973.

I have two questions. Do you think there is any possibility that is Rose in the picture for the Synanon ad? There are certain parts of it that do resemble Rose, but it doesn't make sense that it would be her.

And secondly, what would hve been the biggest adjustment arriving at Synanon in the summer of 1972 (as a 15 year old). Was it the rules, cruelty, punishment, loneliness, etc. I've read that you've said CHristmas was a very hard time for many of the kids and that there were more runaways during that time. Where did these kids run to? Did they stay in Oakland, or head over to San Francisco? Or do you even know?

Thanks again, Julie. You really cannot imagine how helpful your input has been. And I'm sorry about your childhood spent at Synanon. And GOOD FOR YOU for getting the hell out!

Well first of all, many recent newcomers were in fact used as poster children and would appear in local newspapers and such promoting this wonderful place and how it had changed their life (and often split within weeks or months). We had some successes at Synanon but we had many failures. I know the woman and am trying to identify her. She was married to a man named Ruben and she woudl have been in her twenties in that picture.

And secondly, what would hve been the biggest adjustment arriving at Synanon in the summer of 1972 (as a 15 year old). Was it the rules, cruelty, punishment, loneliness, etc.

Children that came to the community probated by the courts felt abandoned. they were encouraged to write letters but we learned decades later (through the lists that I manage or moderate) that many of these letters were never received by the parents or family members whom they were intended for. Many left during the holidays because of their family memories. She got there before they started shaving heads but a few years later, she would have landed on our doorstep and had her head shaved as her first memory of this nice place. Chiristmas is a hard time for anyone away from home or going through deaths or recent anniversaries or lost memories and all that. True for Synanites and true for everyone else. She would have been thrust into a place with many rules that didn't make sense, felt abandoned, told she was an (insert all the swear words in the world)........I can tell you more....but that is what I';m going to write for now.

Thanks again, Julie. You really cannot imagine how helpful your input has been. And I'm sorry about your childhood spent at Synanon. And GOOD FOR YOU for getting the hell out!

My family left 2 years later. By then, I was 16, married, starting my sophomore year in college (graduated at 19) and received 2 grad degrees after that but I did indeed lose my childhood. I have a photographic memory or to some extent and I do help people who lived there remember things about their life there or timeline etc that they can't figure out. Many people blocked out traumatic things that happened there.

During the 1977-1978 timeframe, my name appeared in the press because I was a whistleblower about childabuse that was occuring in the community. It was my dad who hired (I helped pay the retainer out of money I earned at then age 15) to pay for an atty to try and get my younger sister out but it was deemed a domestic case. The lawyer soon after almost died after being intentionally bitten by a rattlesnack placed in his mailbox at his home by 2 synanon members.

She said she received one letter. From the bus station, she said someone had stolen everything she had. She doesn't have the letter. I didn't ask if she wrote back but she may not have had an address to write back to. . .BTW she doesn't have pictures either.
Thanks, Isabela. Lord, there is just nothing about Rose's story that doesn't make me want to cry.

I wonder where she was heading on the bus? Or if she ever made it out of there on a bus, since all of her stuff was stolen. She probably didn't have much. And probably no money.

Julie, Welcome! Do you recognize the young girl in this picture? Do you know her name, or anything about her? We are looking into another case where this is important. Thanks!

Ohhh, Isabela, I feel almost ill hearing that Rose didn't even have a drug problem and yet was sent to Synanon for recovery. She must have felt so alone and betrayed by everyone. And all of her letters went to her father who never shared them with a damn soul. I so much wish she knew how much she was missed.

Isabela, in your phone call with Claire, did you ask her if she heard from Rose while Rose was in Synanon and, if so, did she write her back?
many of the young cvhildren and teens who came to synanon came due to truancy, being difficult or rebellious at school and not just for drug problems. they were encouraged to then cop out to drug problems....whoich they never had .....

There were two classes of people in the community. Those who moved in for drugs "dope fiends: referred to and llifestylers i.e. moved in for the lifestyle like my mom and stepdad.

the older girl is the child of a long time synanon member and so is the youjng girl. We were commonly asked to take care of other children like this picture as part of our work in the community. To divulge these names however would not protect their privacy. None are your Rose btw.

Is that the famous Synanon-lawyer rattlesnake case, or did they do that to many attorneys during that time period?

Yes that is the Paul Morantz atty that we hired. He came calling after hearing that I was telling my story at my local community college. He asked if I wanted to testify to what had happened to me. I wrote an autobiography about my life there. I hold the copyright but don't intend to publish it. There are books about synanon written from many points of view that you can find at varous places.

congratulations, Julie, on your two degrees and I hope a happy life now that you are an adult. I can't even imagine what it would have been like there, as an adolescent, and being subjected to the "game" a few times a week. Adolescents are so shaky at that age and that would seem to cut to your core.

I am going to bring a picture over here for you to look at... and see if you can tell me if you remember this girl. Be right back.

Tomales is Tomales Bay located near bolinas or Marshall and about 15 miles from Petaluma. If she ran from Oakland, she would have easily been assimiliated into the runaway community that was huge in those days. If she ran from Tomales, depends whether she ran down Hwy 1 and hitched to SFO or ran like I did along the country roads 15 miles to Petaluma. I was brought bavk, beat up while they let 2 newcomers who ran with me go home to their parents I believe. I eventually left a few months later with my real dad and then to foster care till I got in to college.

That was a young girl born in synanon. These questions are not about the Cole girl in question so not comfortable in answering. We try and protect the privacy of those who lived there at an earlier time. I hope you understand.

Julie,

Please take a minute and read about another case that we are working on here. This is the thread http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37112
Some of us here believe that the little girls that we just showed you pictures of are the same little girl, Anna Christian Waters.

not who you are thinking of.....

separately this one

includes 3 people who were in synanon about 2 years at the time. The woman's first name was Betty P. and will leave rest out to protect her privacy but not who you are thinking of.

during the 1970-1974 timeframe, there were people moving in as lifestylers who could have brought other children in as their own and no one would havve know the difference but people were encouraged to cop out and I suspect eventually someone would in one of those nasty games you have probably read about by now.

How did they find all of you so quickly? And how did they get you to return with them? Was that part of the brute force (some army name I think) that they were utilizing at that point? Not exactly the happy community they tried to make everyone believe they were.

Julie,

Do you ever remember a man by the name of George Waters. He was a doctor. Or a man named George Brody. Here are there pictures.
