CA CA - Sherry Pickle, 15, Long Beach, 14 May 1972

  • #21
I just spent 2 hours at one of our local libraries in L.A. County, looking through microfilm of newspapers from May of 1972...I saw nothing in there about Sherry. Nothing at all. I searched from May 14 until sometime in late May. I wonder if her disappearance ever even made it into the papers. I know the 35th anniversary of her disappearance is coming up, and I really wanted to find something. But as Marilynilpa said, there were a lot of runaways and hitchhikers back then, and I think lot of missing were automatically categorized as runaways too. Also I did find from going through the papers that there were a lot of burglaries and robberies in the area (West Covina) at the time. A 17 year old boy who was hitchhiking in the area, ended up being robbed by the guy who picked him up.

Anyway...I tried

Very good efforts Gina_M. Just to confirm, I searched my subscription to Newspaperarchive.com and there is nothing about Sherry - just a couple of recipes that include both sherry and pickle relish. I searched all years - 1754 through 2006.

If she was initially considered a runaway a large city newspaper would likely not consider this newsworthy.

This month marks 39 years since Sherry Jean Pickle went missing. Her case has never been solved.

This is one of the cases that haunts me. I grew up in Long Beach and am not too many years younger than Sherry. I wish there were more information. Did she live in Long Beach, or West Covina? Did she have a license, or a car? It would not be easy or practical to travel between the two cities on public transit, so hitch hiking makes sense (unless her male companion was picking her up). I'm not surprised that there is no information to be found in the newspapers. I was a teenage runaway, and my parents had difficulty even getting the police interested, let alone the media (and my mom worked for the local paper!). It's sad that there is not any more public information. If she is anything like I was, she had a group of girlfriends who knew what was going on her life, even if her parents were in the dark. Almost 40 years later, they might still be able to shed some light on who she associated with. Since there is speculation that she was a homicide victim, it may be that the police have investigated and have an idea of what happened to her (and who harmed her), but could not go forward without more evidence. I hope that she will some day be found. I always keep her in mind whenever I see anything about an unidentified body turning up in Southern California.

Which makes me wonder why they age-progressed her as a heavyset woman (judging from the thickness of her neck) with wide facial features bearing so little resemblance to the pretty, high-cheekboned teenager on the photo?

I think, usually, the artist takes a lot from members of the missing persons family (at what age the developed jowls, wrinkling, sagging skin, under eye bags, etc). Years ago, I saw an artist do an age progression on "The New Detectives" on the Discovery Channel. She used photos of many different family members to do the progression, but then I have heard of other artists who just use the family member who they think most resembles the missing person. The multi-person approach sounds better to me.

Probably the easiest way to get from West Covina to Long Beach would be to take the 605 Freeway, but she would definitely have to have some sort of transportation. Did they know who the male companion is and follow up with him?

There was an unidentified teenage girl found in La Habra Heights http://doenetwork.org/cases/584ufca.html who some people at Websleuths thought could be Sherry Pickle http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87728

Just bumping this up to see if anyone is interested in discussing this. There hasn't been activity in a while.

I also thought that the La Habra Heights Jane Doe might have been Sherry Pickle. Was this reported to LE and if so, does anyone know the outcome?

I wish we had more info on her habits as well and why they thought she may have been hitchhiking to L.A. If she had a history of living on her own for extended periods or hitchhiking extensively, it might support the possibility of her ending up quite a way from home. I think she looks a lot like the Jane Doe found in Anchorage in 1980. http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/311ufak.html

It's a long shot - it's a long way from home and approximately 7 years after she disappeared from Ca... But, the hair color, approximate age and height seem to line up (other sites estimate the Jane Doe's height at 5'3"). It just strikes me that the reconstruction looks a lot like Sherry, just a few years older.
