It's been more than 2yrs since the last post for Shirley. If Sarah or Penny still visit this thread, were there ever any updates on the DNA testing? Was it added to CODIS and NamUs? With all the new family tree databases, have you done your DNA through any of them? If so, may I suggest that you upload to GEDmatch and DNAsolves, if you haven't already?
I've read this thread, the Vernon Jane Doe thread and Sarah's blog. My heart breaks for your family. I'm definitely not an expert at researching, but I'd love to try and help!

Hi everyone!

I had to create a new account and I so appreciate everyone's dedication. We lost my mom Penny a few years ago and we never did find her mom, but it's a comfort to know that she knows now.

I am renewing my search for my grandma. Many years ago, Detective Turner told me he was closing the case because he questioned the validity. A cousin had written that once her family received a call to pick up Shirley from the police station and he said if that were the case, she would've been fingerprinted and therefore her body would've been identified. I argued that many Jane Does don't have fingerprints, but he repeated that he was closing the case. My main goal had been to submit my DNA sample in case her remains were ever tested, which I had already done. I really don't know how this all works. Detective Turner told me way back then that it could take 20 years for all remains to be tested. Well, next year will be 20 years since we had that conversation.

Someone left a comment on my blog that she was removed from the Doe Network and just a couple days ago, I noticed it had been put back up years ago. I had no idea. Also, I see there are two case numbers for her. I left a message today with Los Angeles Police and hopefully they'll call me back tomorrow.

Friends are now helping me search the entire country. My aunt's last memory is that her mom had a new boyfriend and was going to a different state with him. Who knows how many boyfriends she had after that.

I'm also using Ancestry to try to find more evidence of other marriages. This is so frustrating.

I talked to the Long Beach Police today and they're going to have someone call me back. They said their case numbers are 9 digits, so I don't know what the two numbers are on Namus. Also, I have no idea who said my grandma had the last name "Thielke." Never heard that one.

I remember my mom and I talking about this Jane Doe many years ago. Such a coincidence that she had a tattoo with the name Shirley and Seattle where she grew up, but I see this woman was identified! I'm so happy for her family.

Thank you! I know your post is old and I don't know if you're on here anymore, but a detective in Redmond, WA came to collect my DNA in October or November of 2006 right after I filed the missing person's report and I don't know what the process was. I googled and saw there was an FBI Missing Person's DNA program and I wanted to get my DNA in a database in case Grandma's remains were ever tested. I was hoping it would be simple, but I was required to file a missing person's report since the one my aunt filed in 1974 seemed to be non-existent.

I was reading that there are tens of thousands of unidentified remains and it seems like just a fraction are on the Doe Network.
