I totally agree with you. You need to let them have some autonomy in middle school so they can mess up, which they will, and then you can work together to show them the consequences. Kids need the freedom to muck it all up, otherwise they do not know how to handle themselves. imo

But in Sierra's case, I would have been concerned about her standing at a bus stop ALL ALONE every day. That seems very dangerous, imo.

It's s slippery slope. I came of age as the Oakland County Child Killer stalked my county, which still haunts me. As a mom, I'd send my teen son to the bus stop but watch from the window. He loves the color red, which suited me fine ... I could see him in the morning light. Even then (he's a college freshman), he was tall, husky, and tough. But my daughter is like Sierra or Lauren Spierer, very petite and pretty. I'm glad she doesn't like the bus, LOL. I drive her every day!

That said, she's a sophomore like Sierra and will go to college in a couple of years. IMO, we have to teach our kids how to be safe on their own, as you note. But it's not easy.

I'm not sure what to think here. Someone could have been scoping Sierra's situation out. Maybe someone who does lawn care in the area, etc. OTOH, maybe she planned a "day trip" with someone who had more than a day in mind.

Could br totally unrelated to. But how stupid you know the condoms have DNA

Thanks IDB. I don't see how it could be unrelated. It would be a huge coincidence if it were. I think. I wonder where exactly on Palm.

Investigators have confirmed that today volunteers with the Klaas Kids organization found an empty handcuff box at the end of Palm Avenue.

The box did not have handcuffs inside, but they did find at least two used condoms in the box.

Officials are collecting evidence and are sending it off to a crime lab to be analyzed.

How refreshing that LE confirms things. In the Holly Bobo case, we got NOTHING! In fact, most of the cases we hear about, LE dances around every little thing...and leaves the public clueless, citing "Ongoing investigation, blah..blah..blah."

And there's more than one of them (condoms), according to the article, which could mean more than one person (or not). ???

Oh, but now they can go to every place that sells handcuffs....Even if they bought it online, then they can track that down. Even better due to credit card. Either way. Maybe they will have fingerprints of the merchant, etc. if not the offender.

If a previous sex offender, they can narrow it down to types of rapists (handcuffs, condoms, etc). If you do a search on sex offenders in her zip code, you'll find that there are so many on Montery. Even as close as a mile away. There are several trailer parks on Monterey that go from 1 mile to 3 or 4. And one sex offender who I think lives off of Palm about 3 miles away. I did the research the other night, but I didn't save any of the maps.

Coyote creek and is at the end of Palm and some bodies of water.

Can someone bring the map over to this thread so we can see the possible path that they went?

Here's one. I was zooming in so you can zoom out with the - . Bus stop was on Palm and Doughtery. Looks like Palm ends at Monterey Rd. on one end and the end I was zooming in on is some sort of industrial center with another road winding off of that.
Palm Avenue, Morgan Hill, CA - Google Maps

Thanks Ransom. I was wondering if we could also have the map with the locations where the phone and bag were found.

Very sad. The handcuff case was found at the end of Palm Avenue which is the street where the bus stop is right? When they say the "end" of Palm Avenue do they mean Monterey Road? That road seems more traveled. So, maybe she did make it to the bus stop and was waiting?

Sad yes, but should be a great place for LE to start narrowing down the list of possible perps. Model #s, batch #s, what areas they were sent to, who sells them, internet orders in that area... sounds like a boat load of info on the way IMHO! Not to mention possible finger prints and DNA on the box and the condoms. I see :jail: soon!

I mentioned this last night as a possible way to abduct Sierra, but now in light of this new info, I feel even stronger it may have been somone playing cop, and feeding her a line to get her in the car.

I would have figured well traveled by searchers before now also, though.
It's astounding to believe this has been here the whole time.
Palm Ave. from one end to the other I would have thought would have been gone over with a fine tooth comb.

Shades of Holly Bobo again, with little breadcrumbs thrown out later on?

Or completely unrelated altogether?

I agree, it is hard. I never let my DD do dangerous things alone. I even ended up driving her to and from school because I caught her taking rides with older friends a couple of times. The bus stop was t the bottom of the hill at an intersection where a lot of our friends lived. They would literally stop a few feet away from where she was standing for the bus, so of course they would offer her a ride. And I didn't like her riding with new drivers.

But I was mostly referring to the statement that they are not going to allow their 15 yr old to go anywhere on their own, for safety sake. I think kids need to be on their own in safe locations to learn how to make their own decisions.

I agree that she might have agreed to take a day trip with someone and they turned out to be evil. Or it could be a landscaper or local employeee or a neighbor even.

That is a good theory. If that is the case, I don't know about down there, but here we have a lot of people who drive the used police vehicles that still have the search light attachment. And that is one thing they look for in rapists...someone who drives those cars among other things.

Although it seems they took they removed the handcuffs from the box after the abduction. Kind of indicates to me that they were not sure about doing it but decided to. Not sure about that..just thinking outloud. That was dumb of them to throw the box and condoms out there likely knowing they would be found.

South Bay search teams looking for clues in the case of missing teenager Sierra LaMar have found two used condoms next to a box marked "handcuffs" about a mile from where the girl was likely abducted nearly two weeks ago.

Thursday afternoon's find would potentially be a major breakthrough in the case that has stymied police over the past two weeks -- or it could be a simple coincidence and another dead-end, investigators said. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office won't know until the crime lab tests the cardboard box and condoms for DNA and other clues.

"Other than the fact that it's pretty close to Sierra's mom house, there's no indication at this time that it's related," said Sgt. Jose Cardoza. "But we're collecting it as possible evidence."

He added: "This may be another significant piece of evidence but it's hard to confirm that it's related at this time."

A volunteer for the Klasskids Foundation, a missing person's group helping search for clues, found the box and condoms at the end of Palm Avenue, west of Santa Teresa Boulevard in Morgan Hill.

It's about a mile down Palm from the intersection of Dougherty Avenue, where Sierra, 15, was supposed to catch a bus after 7 a.m. on March 16.
