GigTu, I agree. I feel so sad for Stacey and her family. The BF, ex or not, does not appear concerned, which, in turn, is very concerning.

He must have taken lessons from Lennie Ames, Stephanie Warner's on and off BF. In his case he faked concern and said he was just "baffled" by her disappearance in a TV interview, cooperated briefly and then stopped. It's about time for the TV interview with Stacey's ex.

You're right, Lilibet! I don't think Stacey's family realizes how much interest they could generate for Stacey if they would just join us here at Websleuths. It'd be awesome. We could ask the pointed questions of Stacey's verified insider family/friends that would really needle the right individual(s), and then we might get to see that TV interview too quick to talk.

For example: So, you were the last one to see Stacey. Did she just open the door and limp off into the sunset? Because we know Stacey can't walk easily on account of an ankle injury from a Horse (probably more like from a horse's * , if the truth were told!).

Great article. Lots of information...debit card last used 10/16, the reason it took from 10/12 to 11/2 to report Stacey missing, areas searched, etc.

From the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, information officer Lynn Ward on Tuesday reported there are no new developments in the case at this time. Search efforts have been conducted on the residence and the property where Smart was living, as well as surrounding areas. Detectives are continuing to follow up on leads.

Santos-Hamann was dismayed that because of days off detectives apparently did not get involved until Nov. 8. However, since then they appear to be working hard on the case questioning friends and family and following leads, she said.

Santos-Hamann said she’d been somewhat out of the loop because she and her children were ill with the flu. But when Santos-Hamann’s great-grandmother died Oct. 31 and there was still no contact she got very concerned." Does anyone know if the phone was disconnected before she was reported missing, when or why? I would be very concerned if it was disconnected after she was realized missing, and before reported and who disconnected it.

The date the phone was disconnected and by whom makes a huge difference and I suspect it was after she disappeared but before anyone in her family realized it. If Stacey herself had disconnected the phone, she would have let her family know.

I imagine that family or LE looked into that. If not, they need to.

I would also like to know if Stacey was missed by anyone outside of her family shortly after disappearing. She did know people and had gone to a house-warming party the night before her last use of her debit card. If people noticed and asked her BF about her (not suspecting anything) what did he say? "I broke up with her and she left"?

Was this date before or after the party she attended?
If it was before the party she attended, did she mention breaking up with her boyfriend to anyone? Did she seem upset about this at all?
Did she seem upset about anything? What was her demeanor like at this party?
How did she get to this party? Was she driven there by someone?
Was the boyfriend there? Who took her home? Or how did she get home?

:welcome: Cetana. You're right. Sherri and Stacey were reported missing the same day (although Stacey had been missing for about two weeks). We see the age and prettiness factor in many cases, including the one in my signature.
It saddens me too. That's why some of us like to "adopt" orphan threads...the ones that get little attention from the media and Websleuthers.

I think LE determined that Sherri's case wasn't connected to the others. But it's always good to think about it.

Right now, we are waiting for more information on Stacey, so that we can proceed. I'd like to think Stacey is being held somewhere like Sherri. I never expected Sherri to be alive. So it would be wonderful to have another miracle.

Finally, news! The family has hired a search manager, Angie Forslund. She is has made progress without the help of LE who have not even used their SAR
team, and have done nothing, according to Angi. The family believes Stacey is not alive. Angi considers the boyfriend a suspect.

According to Forslund and the family, Smart's boyfriend changed the carpet in his home near Lewiston Lake after Smart was reported missing. He also told the family she had moved out.
Forslund has conducted three searches to find Smart since November 9. Since then, she has received multiple leads and is now looking for a navy jacket, tan carpet and plywood as pieces of evidence.

Forgive me if this has already been posted. I hadn't seen it yet. This article talks about the third search Saturday of last week. The article was updated Nov. 23.

The sheriff explains their lack of involvement with the searches...

The Trinity County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team has not been a part of these searches, although Sheriff Bruce Haney said that could change with more information.
“We’re ready at any time to go out and conduct a full-scale search,” he said. “Unless we get some information to move forward it’s very difficult if not impossible to determine where to start a search.”
He noted that Smart was not reported missing for several weeks and said, “Obviously, the trail’s kind of cold at that point.”


Although his comment may sound rather cold, he is being realistic. Rural counties such as Trinity and Humboldt are notoriously underfunded and understaffed in an area of much crime. Tracey's family is very wise to raise money for a PI.

Sheriff Haney was not involved in interviewing the boyfriend, so he doesn't know why he did not report Stacey missing. But he was cooperative and allowed a search of his house and property. At this point he is not considered a POI, but this could change with more information.

I'm sure LE is looking at him, but they seem to need more in this case in order to actually name him a POI. It took two months in Stephanie Warner's case. That's why I'm glad the family has a search coordinator who has turned in what she's found to LE, and they are still trying to raise money for a PI.

Do you mean connected with Sherri or with Stacey? I don't think it would have to do with Stacey. Time will tell if there's a connection to Sherri.

Excellent news! I will guess that the carpet and plywood are in a landfill, burned, or thrown over a cliff/embankment. Stacey may have been 'discarded' similarly if he had no regard for her. If she was buried, I don't see how they'd find her unless someone remembers seeing his vehicle around the 10/15-19/20 time frame.

Hopefully they can find out where and when he got his new carpet, how much plywood was replaced, and if the installers can attest to the quality of the plywood that was left behind, and if it makes sense that he replaced only a portion.
