Yes, he died of natural causes in prison. Funny how he was able to live a long life while his victims did not.

This case is really horrific - there was no positive outcome at the end :(

Timothy White, died at 35 of a pulmonary embolism

Steven Stayner, died at age 24 (or 25) in a hit and run automobile accident. The hit and run driver only served 90 days (what a misjustice).

Kenneth Parnell died at 76 of natural causes in prison (Can't say I'm sad about that)

Cary Stayner, alive at San Quentin, killed 4 women

1990 Jesse Stayner, Steven's uncle, murdered in a case that has not been solved. Cary lived with him at the time.

Can you imagine the hell the parents (Dell and Kay) have suffered through all these years.

I hope the dedication brings a smile to their face.

Hugs,

Mel

I worked as a volunteer for the John Walsh foundation before it became the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as a matter of fact it was one of my first jobs. John worked very hard to get laws passed to have sex offenders registered. I remember when Steven went missing and then was found he was a lost soul forever. That creep messed him up so bad. Every time people go to the statue I hope they remember what Steven went through to save that child and himself and maybe help save many more children, with allowing his story to come forward. There are thousands of Children, teens and adults still missing and we need your help. Please take a look a the link below every so often and see if you recognized someone from your state. Hardly anyone including LE have a lot of time to dedicate to teens and adults, so the families really need your help. Thanks.

When I lived in Merced, several years ago, there was a lot of talk about a memorial to Steven. I am so happy that this finally came to pass! This poor family has been through more heartache than they deserve. I am happy to see what will hopefully be a bright spot in his families lives.

A very beautiful and touching tribute to Steven Stayner - a young hero. There are very touching photos taken at the memorial at the following link (hope it works):

thank you for posting that link, scrabble. it is so nice to see his parents smiling in some of those pictures. they have been through so, so much together and i'm glad they could see this memorial happen. also, steven's daughter is quite a beauty!

The 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 who abducted Steven and Timmy and tortured Steven for 7 years, who served a mere 5 years for those crimes, was later arrested for trying to buy a little African American 4 year old boy. He was caught in sting. Details prove he intended to sexually abuse the child. He was sentenced to 25 to life for that, in 2004 and died in 2008.

Long time lurker and never posted before, call me shy......I am sooo happy to see this!!!! I cried over Steven's story and he has always stayed with me.

Its such a shame the laws were so lenient way back then... that a monster like Parnell could stay free to harm other children, while the victims paid for his crimes. We have evolved the laws and I'm sure they could be evolved more... We need to have ways to keep our children safe... and keeping the monsters locked up is a big start.

I pray everyday for God to please keep all of the children safe and out of harms way.

I can still remember the Stayner case like it was yesterday. That lifetime movie was a huge tearjerker and really brought home for me how devastating not only the initial disappearance was to the family but how dificult for all Steven's eventual return was. He had such a hard time transitioning back into his family.

The statue is lovely, thanks for posting photo of it.

Looked at all the pictures. What a lovely memorial dedication and a beautiful statue. It is so incredibly sad that both of the boys died young after overcoming such a horrific situation. It just doesn't seem fair.

This is my response as well. The whole idea takes my breath away... simply not subtle enough, imo, when our region has such a conflict with "remembering."

I disagree. Steven Stayner was not his brother and deserved the statue for what he did. It is not his fault that his brother has the same last name. I think it was a bit silly to suggest that the name Stayner shouldn't be associated with the statue. The statue had nothing to do with Cary.

my goodness. let steven be remembered without dragging his brother into it. steven and his family went through unimaginable tragedy. cary's actions were horrific and completely reprehensible. but that has nothing to do with steven and how we can remember and honor him.
