I wonder where the nearest lights appear on the horizon at night from where they found William...

Heat hampers search for tourist missing in California desert
Authorities say the search for a Virginia woman whose husband was found dead in Southern California's Mojave Desert has been hampered by heat so extreme that the ground temperature has reached 165 degrees (74 degrees Celsius).
San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said Tuesday that a June search for Susan Schmierer was called off because conditions in the area with black lava rock were unsafe for deputies and their dogs. Another search is planned for July 28.

Confused about the call on June 1 that their car had been abandoned for 10 days if they were still up and at 'em on June 2nd. They just... casually ditched their car over a week prior to their deaths? What?

The next search is July 28th??? Am I reading that correctly?

I believe the call saying the car was abandoned was made on the 13th.

With it being over a month since they were last seen, the terrain, and the heat (not to mention danger to the searchers right now), I think they are probably considering this a recovery more than a search.

This is a head scratcher for sure. If her husband collapsed, we would expect the Mrs. to head back the way they came in, to get help.
Of course she would have been panicked and maybe went the wrong way.

Sumthin ain’t adding up here...

I'm familiar with this area, I was raised in Mohave Valley, AZ . I live on the Central Coast, so going home to visit family we drive I40.
Strange story. So they over shot Palm Springs and drove to Amboy, which is in the middle of nowhere by the way. It's between Barstow and Needles, and is not exactly a destination spot. Were they into geology, rock collectors?
Body found in search for missing Virginia couple
The article says they had hotel reservations, and were going to visit their daughter. Wouldn't they have told their daughter of their plans?

Thanks for the link! I may have missed it, but does anyone remember hearing that another person was found dead near the Amboy crater on May 30?

From your link:
Just three days before the couple is thought to have ventured into the desert and gone missing, the body of another man was found at the Amboy Crater trailhead on May 30. A spokesman at the Bureau of Land Management office said extreme temperatures in the area are making it too hot for visitors to hike without proper training and supplies.

Assuming she could get out. Could easily have fallen off the steep trail leading to the crater or even into the crater itself, gotten bitten by a snake, disoriented due to lack of water, etc. For all we know the wife could have been the disabled one and her husband was the one trying to get out for help and didn't make it.

Have there been any updates on this case? All of the articles I can find are from the middle of July.

Sad but understandable.

She cannot/will not be found alive if she is found at all and you'd think she would have been found by now. The desert, like the ocean, is unforgiving and frequently underestimated.

It is hard to know whether to wish them luck or not. I understand completely the need to know but it's hard to hope that they find her because they'll be looking for her remains and NO brother should have to find his dead sister.

The almost year-long search for Susan Schmierer, 65, of Williamsburg, Virginia, ended Sunday, April 28, when sheriff’s department searchers found her remains in the desert east of Amboy Crater.

Her cause of death is pending autopsy but appears to be consistent with accidental heat exposure.
