I came over here from the Barbara Thomas - Mojave Desert thread.

This is such sad story. I see the sense of adventure this couple had. The crater would certainly be an interesting sight to see. In a different season, well-prepared for it.

Now, the Amboy Crater just seems like part of Hell in summer. A great place to avoid in warm months. I do thank the searchers who persisted and braved those conditions to find their remains.

We'll never know the exact story, but I am grateful that they have both been found. RIP

And, as if the deaths of the Schmeirer's wasn't caution enough about hiking that Amboy Crater trail in summer, there were two more people that died along the same trail-region in August the year prior, 2017:

An Orange County couple died while hiking near the Amboy Crater

In that tragedy, searchers estimated the air temperature to be about 113F in the area when the hikers got into trouble about 13:30.

That place is too spooky and evil for me.

So it was the weather as extreme heat that more then likely, was responsible for their deaths and not a 3rd person. Living in the Sonoran desert outside of Phoenix, and coming here from the east coast, I can understand people who simply cannot fathom this type of heat until you actually experience it.
