A California woman has been charged with attempted murder after authorities accused her of dumping her 1-hour-old baby in a gas station trash can and fleeing the scene.

The Fullerton Police Department announced the arrest of Venissa Maldonado in connection with the discovery of the baby on Thursday in a bathroom trash can at the gas station.

Not again! Another young woman delivering a baby apparently without family or friend support; or at age 25 is this without regard for human life?

Does California have Safe Haven protocol, or Baby Boxes?

(Or plain common sense imho -- leave the baby someplace safe!)

@cvaldez1975 is this close to you?

jmho of course and so glad the baby is receiving care!

Fullerton is about 40 minutes from Los Angeles, 25 minutes from me, going east. We do have baby safe havens.
I asked my brother if this is one of his gas stations-he a regional manager for Chevron. It is not his area.
He does say the employees are praying for this baby.

"
The Safety Surrendered Baby Law was signed into California state law in January of 2006.

Its intent is to save the lives of newborns at risk of abandonment by encouraging parents to safely surrender the infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked.

The law requires the baby to be taken to a hospital, designated fire station or other designated surrender sites."

(Although I want to say I heard you can drop the baby at any fire station, you just might have to interact with someone vs putting them in the safe box.)

This article gives the address as near 900 block of West Orangethorpe Avenue in Fullerton, Calif.

The closest fire station is around the block and looking at street view, they have the little sign up that says it is a safe baby drop off. It would have been a 30 minute walk if she was on foot 4min drive.
