We have narrowed down possible last names, found I believe a second cousin, yeah I think we will ID her this year.
Hello Emilia,
Any news on Lyra Jade? Did the team get closer to her identification? I really hope 2023 will be a year of her identification.
Thank you for a hard work your team does to identify Lyra Jade

I am hopeful. Another xmas season where countless home DNA kits are given and sent in allover the world. And another year of increased social media awareness about missing peoples and UID cases that bridges countries and languages in the blink of an eye. One day she will have her name back.

I have just noticed that Lyra Jade’s profile on the DDP website was last updated in September 2023, but I cant see any changes, I am wondering if there is any development un her case.

Nothing major. I have been continuously working this case for five years, and we continue to work on it. One of the 4 or 5 Parga sisters (Monica, Basilia, Josefa, Feliciana, and Sotera) is our most likely grandmother or great grandmother. I say 4 or 5 because Monica and Basilia might be twins, or they might be 1 person whose baptism was in one name and civil registry birth registration was in the other. I would say it is most likely that they were one person, since there is no reference to them as "gemelas" (twins), as there was for the twins Tomasa and Josefa, and Catarina's final two children who both died shortly after birth (Catarina Montellano also died during childbirth of these two twins.)

Other than Feliciana, there is absolutely zero information on Monica/Basilia, Josefa, or Sotera, other than that they were born and baptized. Martin Parga and Catarina Montellano had both passed by the time Sotera was 12 years old, so she might have been adopted and given a different name. No marriage records, no death records, they are not even referenced as witnesses in official records for other persons in that town. I even researched the "Padrinos" (i.e., godparents) referenced in her baptism record, and could find no reference to Sotera in any of their records. Josefa's twin sister Tomasa lived and died in Los Angeles, but Tomasa's downlines can very definitely be ruled-out.

We did find a great granddaughter of Feliciana whose test came in at about a 3C. Feliciana is not completely ruled out because the great granddaughter could still be a half-2C to Lyra Jade. But we can rule out Feliciana's son Daniel as a direct ancestor. Feliciana did have children with men other than Daniel's father, so a half-2C by way of Feliciana is still a theoretical possibility.

We are also looking at other ancestral lines that are showing some hopeful results, but nothing definite that we can report publicly.

Exactly! My husband (of SE Asian heritage) is getting a kit in his stocking.

I just talked to my neighbor---she was a student at Westlake High when that body was found in the parking lot. She said the police talked to the students and showed them a drawing of her face to see if anyone knew or recognized her. No one seemed to know her. But she said there were rumors that she was from the Simi/Moorpark area, which is due East of the campus, through the hills. Rumors were that her boyfriend did not want a baby because he was going to college.

But these are 25 yr old rumors and I don't think anything ever came from them.
There’s always truth to rumors, that boyfriend should be investigated!

That rumor probably popped up before it was known she was killed by a known SK.

As far as men related to this case go, I hope the man who impregnated her and then has the audacity to act like he doesn't even remember her name has had sufficient pressure from law enforcement. It still baffles me that nothing much came of that lead.

It's so sad that no one seems to remember her. She was someone's someone. It really breaks my heart. I hope we are able to get some sort of update soon.

I hope that Lyra Doe has been identified! The DDP and Carl were close to her identification and the last update was a year ago!

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office recently highlighted her case by posting this video on their social media. I really hope she gets identified soon.

Bump. I just finished reading every page of this thread. Very sad case.
IMO she was likely a prostitute.
Possibly estranged from family and living a transient lifestyle so no one knew she was missing. But surely she had friends/associates who would notice they hadn’t seen her in a while? They may not have thought to report her missing thinking she’d moved away. Or were transient themselves (possibly involved in illegal activity) so avoided contacting police. Could she have been living rough, couch surfing or staying in hostels or shelters at the time?
Was her face shown on the news at the time and the murder made public? Surely someone would have recognised her.
All IMO

She was nicely dressed, I doubt she was transient or homeless. Sexwork is possible but even if she was a working woman, maybe illegally in the country, someone must be missing her.

I meant more of a transient, as in estranged from family in Mexico and trying to make her way living in L.A. She could have had basic accommodation and access to food, clothing, a shower etc but living on the fringe of society so to speak. Also earning enough through prostitution to have a few different items of clothing and makeup, I don’t think her being ‘nicely dressed’ rules this out. She had red pants, a blouse and shoes that could have been bought at a second hand shop for all we know.
