Unfortunately, if he was a hippie, due to the high amount of hippie transients during the 60's, I find it unlikely that his family was looking for him, probably assuming he just cut off contact to live an alternative lifestyle. Perhaps they are looking for them now but this case seems like one that will need to be solved with DNA.

here's the section on John Doe in the 2007 book Off the Wall: Death in Yosemite (accessed through the Internet Archive, pp. 472-3, 481).
[note: some of the description seems to be a little insensitive / doesn't seem to take the death quite seriously. i'm not trying to excuse it or anything, but it should be noted that a) there's a whole introduction of the book about the authors' intentions, and b) this book was written by a jaded former park ranger/search&rescuer (also c) this also covers every death and disappearance in Yosemite up to 2006, so i imagine they had to get a bit creative with descriptions eventually...). otherwise this has a lot of new, interesting info on John Doe not mentioned elsewhere]

ETA i should also mention that the authors had access to official Park records while researching the book
