That's a good point about the cold water preserving the body - I didn't think of that.

It doesn't seem as if a box alone would snap a chain, unless they are moving the car just to make it safer for the divers. I can't wait to see what happens today.

From looking at those maps, it's unlikely that there were many witnesses, and I'm sure that's why the place was chosen. I'm wondering if he returned to the scene a few times to "check" on it, the way Scott Peterson did, and LE figured it out that way? Or perhaps he told Morphey to go checking there, and he told the police where to look?

Another thing that crossed my mind is whether there is more than one body there? Stacy's mother is also missing.

OMG TF! I totally forgot about SP doing that. Maybe this is what concreted the area for them. Remember SP on the cell phone while sitting at the bay and telling everyone he was someplace else? Wonder if DP returned to make sure nothing was visible etc.

The area in question was the Sanitary and Ship Canal. Divers from the state police and other agencies searched it in Lockport for four hours in Wednesday's frigid conditions.

They said their goals were to analyze debris pulled from the water, and to clear dumped cars to allow underwater cameras a better view. The Army Corps of Engineers has said in the past that the canal is littered with abandoned vehicles.

They are potentially looking for a blue barrel that Stacy Peterson's body might have been placed into. A relative of Drew Peterson's has said he helped load a blue barrel used for swimming pool chlorine onto Drew's truck shortly after Stacy disappeared. Drew Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, has dismissed the claims about the barrel and said it does not exist.

Northwestern University criminal law professor Ron Allen said the search could be significant.

"It's not at all a surprise that, notwithstanding the weather, that they're diving," Allen said. "What that indicates is that they probably got information yesterday indicating something might be in the place they are now."

Allen was referring to information they might have obtained thanks to a Tuesday warrant that allowed investigators to search Drew Peterson's scars further.

When the 35 W bridge collapsed the divers were in the water at night. They claimed at times they could only see a few inches in front of them at a time. From being exhausted from their efforts they were only allowed to stay down so many minutes.

I think LE got a good lead & they know for a fact Stacy is in that vicinity. Has Tom M been co-operating cutting a deal? We heard he was in recovery but, was he? I read some place that he'd just went off the wagon after he'd helped DP move the container. We haven't heard nothing about him lately.

But I could have sworn someone said they'd be back out today. This article leans more towards recovery of metal debris for analysis. But to me, it seemed they were attempting to hook something specific for recovery. I still say they found something there yesterday but couldn't pull it up. This is jmo though.

I totaly agree with you all 110% they would not be having the divers in there this late at night with it snowing and if the wind is blowing then the windchill factor comes into play also. They have to had some leads IMO I just checked on the weather bug and with the wind at 13 mph the temp is 19 degrees.

It was 13 degrees out last night. When I woke up this morning, it was 6. It's now 7 degrees. God bless those divers! They must have been freezing last night!

I think it was last night on NBC5. I'll go look for it.

I read that the divers were in there to remove debris and get cars dumped in there out of the way so they could use underwater cameras and sonar. Maybe what appeared to be the tow truck hook coming undone was not so, maybe they were just hooking up cars to move them so they could get a closer look at certain areas. And any objects they found along the way were sent back up .

Wow, it's even colder there than here! It's 10 degrees out right now and we have a lovely blanket of crispy snow with an ice topping. I'm hoping those divers can get in there fast!

I looked at the photos of the search on Greta's blog and FYI they're accessing the canal from the EAST side of the canal (the State Street/IL-171 side).

FWIW, Drew Peterson would NOT have had access to that canal from the EAST side of Division Street because it's restricted; authorized personnel only because it's the access road to the water reclamation plant.

Drew WOULD have had access to the canal from the WEST side of Division Street (near Rt. 53) as I've always suspected. It's more private and there is virtually no traffic there and is heavily wooded.

This is still a very dangerous situation for the divers due to all the debris in the water. We all need to keep the divers and everyone involved in solving this case in our prayers..that they are directed to the information and objects they are searching for today and all remain safe in the process.

I agree DD. If they are moving cars or other large metal debris then something could let go and trap one of them. Sending prayers to all.

No doubt dangerous, but there are a ton of safeties in place, including the divers are probably tethered, and probably have communication. Don't know for sure, but assuming they get stuck to something, the other divers can be directed to their location. Also, they are probably in teams so no diver is alone.
While the waters are trecherous, I'm sure that this is a relatively safe dive, considering all the precautions and experience.
